F reg 1989 Renault 5 , it has the greyish/black very wide plastic panels on the doors. The problem I have is that one of them on the front door is badly cracked and should really need replacing. How do they come off ????? Please dont tell me that its glued on the door! thanks in advance . Read more

I'm trying to rack my brains - I did this very job for my sister some years ago. Same problem - cracked trim. I seem to remember they were silly clips of some sort that just fell apart as I prised the panel off. I think I ended up making some home made clips with a combination of nuts and bolts and copper wire through holes drilled in the door (just twist the wire ends together inside the door to pull the trim against the door surface) The copper wire doesn't rust. You can strip some out of a scrap piece of ring mains cable! Trim panels are usually easy to pick up at a scrappie. Use 'Back to black' or similar to blend it in with the existing panels.

Renault 5s (especially 2 door models) are bad for the doors dropping......amongst other things!

Good luck!

Good afternoon all,
I got myself an old battered 1984 mercedes 280TE last week and, armed with my Haynes manual, decided to do the valve clearances this afternoon.
For those of you in the know this is probably a dumb question.
The manual says adjust the ball pin as necessary, I could not shift the things, presumably because you need to undo the 21mm nut underneath it first. This nut is not mentioned in the manual.
I dont want to start undoing things if I'm not supposed to (in case the engine drops out!)
Does this need to be undone first?
Any info on these will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, John Read more

I need a car towed away and scrapped (as opposed to dumping it in a layby like everyone else!). Does anyone know of a scrapper in/around Guildford who would do this and any idea what it would cost?

Advice much appreciated. Read more

Question Micra 13 Auto
hansi

This has probably been happening during the eight years I've had the car but I only noticed it this morning when for some unknown reason, the car wouldn't start first time as it usually does. I had to touch the throttle briefly, had a bit of smoke out and then ok, but when I switched the igniton on, I heard a sort of rushing sound culminating in a click and then started as normal. Ive never noticed it before, does anyone know what it is? Incidentally, I had this starting problem a year ago and it then started to hunt and I had to have a new throttle chamber fitted. Very expensive!! Read more

Thanks for that Dave. You really are all very helpful on this site. It seems to be ok now. My wife just took it out when she went to her mum's and she said it started ok. It just gave me palpitations because last time this happened,as I said before, I had to have a throttle chamber fitted last year which was megabucks!! The car today must have known we were talking about part exing it for a new Daewoo Kalos and refused to start! but I changed my mind after they only offered me £900 for the Micra. Think I'll run it into the ground now!! Thanks again everyone.

Several times recently, my Volvo V40 alarm system has activated for no apparent reason. I now have to leave it locked but unalarmed for fear of disturbing the neighbours yet again. Any ideas or is it a major dealer investigation job? Read more

I am surprised about the inhibitor switch, have a look at the owners manual.
If there is no trend identifiable as to when the alarm goes off then I would do the basics and check that all openings are shutting correctly, no interior light coming on and no objects are moving in the car when you've alarmed.

Funnily enough went out in one of these last night, A R plate 66k up, Luxurious back seats (leather) with plenty of room (Puts Beemers to shame) very smooth ride, little engine noise, owner has had it since it was 18 months old, no trouble, few repairs.

Obsolete

Yesterday in Bath I was going round and round the long stay car park searching for a space when I saw a souped up recently polished black car parked in two space i.e. the right half of the car occupied the right space and the left half occupied the left space. This struck me as incredibly selfish and egotistical behaviour. Anyone got any ideas about how this driver could have been punished? The obvious of giving the door a kick and leaving a note isn't on, though it does appeal. I am thinking more along the lines of frightening the driver but not causing any damage, not even a scratch. (If only I had had a bag of fresh manure in the boot!)

I wonder if a parking warden could have been 'summoned' (how?) to impose a fine? Read more

I will admit to trying to take up as much space as I can between my wife's car and mine to try and stop people parking BUT I only do this when Chelsea are playing at home.

I do this for 2 reasons
(1) in the forlorn hope that they might be disuaded in parking in the street as there is never anywhere to park on match days.
(2) so one of my neighbours who recognise my car can knock on the door

Friend of mine has one.

For a Mercedes, the things that have gone wrong are SHOCKING!

It's only done 26K and has had water pump failure, self leveling suspension failure, driveshaft failure sunroof problems, eng/manag switch fault, pad wear sensor fault neccessitating their replacement. Fed up of typing now.....

Still, what do you expect when they're built in Spain?
Probably built by someone who'd had a gallon of Sangria...
