(You know what I mean - moving the wheels regularly to different positions on the car). Sorry if a thread already exists.
The supposed advantage (is it one?) is that tyre wear will be equalised.
On the other hand, are wheels that are balanced for a specific location on the car thrown into imbalance when moved to another location?
Shouldn't tyres wear evenly in any case unless something is seriously out of alignment?

We could go into the direction arrows you see on
high performance tyres, but we'll be here all day.
So, a lot of folks run for 5,000 miles then do
o/s/f to n/s/r
n/s/f to o/s/r

Good advice Sean - I used to do this all the time on my old Maestro to great effect.

NEVER do this with directional tyres though. You're only option then is to swap fronts and rears on the same side of the car - unfortunately whilst preserving some tyre life on powerful FWD cars, is not as effective as Sean's non-directional method.

My old Golf runs brilliantly apart from a slight hesitation when the car is moving and the accelerator is pressed firmly.

Everything seems to be working OK i.e. no vacuum loss, recent full service etc.

Any ideas please. Read more

The car is due for service on Thurday. It is done by someone who I trust to do it by the book 100%.

The fuel filter was changed last time. I nearly always use Texaco fule in the car.

I dont think that I've ever changed the HT leads.

Thanks for the advice re the fuel. I'll try it.

My VW alarm/immobiliser has suddenly gone very quiet - it all still works, but when I arm or disarm the car the "beep" is hardly heard, if I deleberately set it off the loudest noise is the clicking of the indicators - anyone any good ideas as to what is wrong and how to solve it. Thanks in advance Read more

I've just remembered how I cured it!

I took the car to my local petrol station and used their airline to blast the water out. Worked a treat!

last saturday there were 20 miles of static trafic on the M5 southbound north of Bristol, most of these were caravans. As an ex.caravanner this amazes me as caravanning is the one holiday you can go on when you please, so why do they all choose Saturday. Its much better travelling mid week, lorry drivers and reps are courtious to caravans, the services are quieter and the journey just flies by. Read more

Saturday has traditionally been "turnaround" day for holidays for generations.

Got me a new fangled GPS/Radar/laser detector but,

will any old laser beam set it off?

The reason I ask is that recently, I was waiting to pull out of a side road, and directly opposite me was a building site within which a steel frame was being erected. My laser alert was blasting away.
Would one of those rotating laser levels that builders use, set it off? Read more

...but most police speed detection is now by laser not radar. And laser detection for speed is pretty pointless. As everyone knows, radar has a lot of scatter, so you had plenty of time to slow down between detecting it and the reading being taken. Pretty much the first you know of being laser'd is when they "lock" onto your car, and as soon as that is done the reading can be taken.

Question 306 GTI 6 Fogs

Does anyone know how to replace the fog light bulbs on this model? There does not seem to be any where to get the covers off.

Many thanks

Yep, bumper off or at least partially, anyway.

As my council tax is ever increasing (29% this year) I always get annoyed by council's wasting money.

The latest that I haveseen that I think is a ridiculous waste of money is a sign for a bus lane in the street next to mine.

There are two 7 foot width restrictions with a painted bus lane in between, which has a bollard the rises and falls. The bus lane must only be 30ft in total but yet 2 great big signs have been erected saying that it is a 24 hour bus lane (not that the bollard would stop you driving through!!).

I am not sure how much it costs to make and erect signs but to me this is just a plain waste of money for something that is so obvious.

Does anyone else have examples of councils wasting money on road signage Read more

Makes you want to scream doesn't it?
Come the day of reckoning & all the imbeciles responsible for
wasting public money will be at the front of the queue...

Do you mean the imbeciles which you voted into power?

Because it most likely isn't the officers who have to deal with all the rubbish from councillors and the public.

The time is rapidly approaching when I will have to change the front disks. The car is a saloon, 1997cc "F" reg but an '89 model.

In theory, the disks should just slide over the hubs but I've been told by a supplier that the car might have disks combined with the hub. Is it easy to tell one type from the other without going to the extreme of dismantling the front end. If it is the latter do I have to buy new bearings etc?

Thank you in anticipation Read more

Cliff Pope

If the disk is detachable then there should be 2 small screws holding it on to the hub. This will be apparent when you remove the wheel. At least the 240 is like that, so I assume the same.
If they are one-piece then you could carefully extract the bearings and re-use in the new unit.
Even if the disks are detachable they may be very tight. You need to apply good leverage but avoid bending the flimsy shield plate. Also it can be tricky making the new disk sit squarely on the hub. The mating sections need to be very clean and freed from burrs.Check very carefully for run-out by watching the disk in the caliper as you turn it slowly.

Would a 1998 1.9 TDI (90) Sharan have a rev limitter and how does it work?

Well, it is governed by the ECU, but why would you want to rev it up anywhere near this?

You notice where the red band starts on your rev counter?

The governor doesn't come in, from memory, until about 4800 rpm, well into the red.

Your engine thrives on torque.

Change up and waft along on the effortless power at around 2400rpm.
