I use an AutoGlym car wash kit, the shampoo and wax are excellent, but I am begining to wish I had never used the glass cleaner. It did make the windscreen very clean at first and I was very happy - until it rained. I have never had any problem with my wipers streaking before, or just not clearing the water from the screen. The thing that really puzzels me is that I also used it on my rear window, which now takes an age to clear dew in the morning with the heated window! This has got worse as it has started to wear off, what did I do wrong? How can I get rid of it? I don't think I used too much.
Is there a glass cleaner that would give the results I won't? Read more
I was reminiscing with a friend over the old Aussie Shiraz, as you do, and began telling her of the time that one of my then young teen-age daughters had to appear in court.
My husband, myself and our two youngest daughters (both young teen-agers) were living in Arcadia in Los Angeles 20-some years ago at the time. One evening we attended a football match (boring, boring, boring) between their school Arcadia High and Pasadena High. During the course of the match the girls disappeared with their friends ? other teenagers from the local Brit pack and school friends. Youngest daughter reappeared on the scene to say that daughter number one had been arrested with a friend?s teenage lad. Scrambled out of the school grounds after her to where the children were being held by a local policeman. Big lad, large gun, nice smile.
He was charging them with riding two on a bike on the roadway. This was a violation of a local traffic code. It transpired that although they were actually on the road they were just circling around talking to their friends and were not travelling in a forward direction. A plea for a warning to be given was refused. He was making an example of them as too many children were getting injured when riding bikes.
Ultimately a court date was received. Time to be in court was 9.30 a.m. The other mother, two children and I arrived at Arcadia Court House on the appointed day at 9.00 a.m. No record of the children was there. Great puzzlement all-round. Light dawned with the court official. It must be Pasadena Court we had to appear. Brief instructions on how to how to get there were given. I drove like the wind breaking every rule in the book (no lectures please). Arrived in underground car park with 5 minutes to spare. One parking space only was available which was on my left. Was just preparing to swing my rather fetching white Buick Riviera Cabriolet past and forward to reverse into said space when from the opposite direction appeared a very, very, superior car, dark blue, as I recall which was in a perfect position to be just slid into the vacant space thus thwarting my intentions.
I drove my car forward ever-so slightly thereby reducing the width of the space. Exited car, strolled over to driver of other car and said ?excuse me, there is just that one space available and I intend that I should park my car in it. Now, as far as I am concerned my car is just a dustbin from Detroit and I really don?t care if, when parking it, it gets damaged. Is that alright with you.? His response, after a few seconds considering his moves, said ?Why of course, ma?am, you take the space, I?ll find another?.
Parked my car, we all ran like hell to the courtroom, case was heard. Kids fined 11 and 7 dollars respectively. End of story.
?That was road rage? says my boozy friend.
?Couldn?t be, says I, I wasn?t on the road.?
?Well then, it was intimidation?
?Nah ? he was 280lbs minimum and I was 8stone two and tuppence. I couldn?t hurt a fly.?
?Verbal abuse, then?.
?Never swore me a swore? I countered.
?Threatening behaviour?? she queried.
?Never raised my voice? sez I.
?Assault with a deadly weapon??
?I wasn?t even in the car?
Now, I know I was desperate to get into the court on time. I know that I couldn't/wouldn't do it again.
I know too that I must have been guilty of something. I now leave it up to all you people to decide just what it was that I was guilty of. Read more
Yes, Fair Play has it about right - sexual harassment. Never fails with me - and I'm usually on the receiving end.

Dear all,
Firstly, if you remenber, I asked for any last minute advice. Those of you who bothered typing out a load of rhetoric about anarchy were going a bit too deep.
I appreciate we should obey the law and I pleaded guilty to both offences.
My mitigation was that as it was the same stretch of road and two minutes apart, it should be treated as one offence. They were both cameras one mile apart. For the nice person who stated that that would be 30mph in between,
I thankyou. However, I figured if they delved into it too deeply maybe it was at 0500.59 secs and 0502.00 secs. This would put me up to 60mph, so I thought I should leave that excuse alone.
Anyway, after putting my case the Magistrates retired and left it to the clerk of the court to look up any case law. I had previously looked at this and case law suggests that offences could be treated as the same for the purpose of penalty points if there was any link between them. Obviously I stated that the link was same road same speed same timeish etc.
The Magistrates returned and gave my sentence...
First speeding offence £150 fine...Second speed offence £140 fine and THREE points in total!!!!
That is in contrast to me sending off the NIPS and getting fined £120 and six points.
Now I feel that justice has been done. I accept that I broke the law but six points was not proportionate for the offences. I am happy with three and a bigger fine. Insurance companies will not load my premium etc.
I think that it shows that if you turn up to court withreasonable mitigation you will be listened to.
Once again thankyou for your constructive comments and good wishes.etc

When you say the cameras are a mile apart is that a mile ish or a proper measured mile?
If it was ot a proper measured mile the magistrates would not have been able to make any calculations on your average speed between the two.
Did you plead 'Not Guilty' or just plead mitigation? If you were NG were there any other witnesses called.
Still think that it was one continual offence and the fact that you were only given 3 points seems to corroborate this. As for the fines well you seem happy to have paid £170 to save three points. I would not have been.
if a Police car had followed you between the two points and used them as Vascar fixed points then you would have only had to answer to one offence.
However I cannot remember what you said the limit was but if it was 30MPH you would have ben double the limit which the Courts sometimes take a very dim view of.

Cleaning my wife's Mondeo yesterday (with her help!) revealed several scratches to the paintwork. Is there a reason why makers use a white undercoat which reveals every mark? The pearlescent petrol blue paint is nice in the sunshine but those marks show through.
Is it deliberate so that we get out the touch up brush before it rusts or are they just being daft?
The bonnet had a few new stone ships too. Flying along the A55 every day won't help, as the road is heavily used by quarry lorries travelling unsheeted with stones aboard.
I have found the neatest way to touch up stone chips is to use the end of a cocktail stick dipped in paint rather then the brush which puts too much paint down. Read more
State Blue (Ford) seems to be a problem, the undercoat is certainly white or grey. Had the same problem when I had a Mondeo
MB seem to use a white undercoat for black cars as well. My wife's C class looked a real mess after 3 years.
J reg Citroen ZX 1.4i Advantage
59000 miles
No history
£750
Drove well enough and bodywork, clutch and gearbox are excellent. But would need a service, the tracking is quite bad, and there's a squeaking noise from the brake pedal. Would also need aerial fitting. I've since found out that on J reg ZX's the front callipers can be sticky. Is this serious (from a safety point) or expensive to fix?
Should I offer £550 or look further and spend £1000 on a better one? Read more
I used to own a 1994 ZX from '97 to '98 with FSH, warranty, etc. and I have driven several other new and new-ish examples. They are excellent to drive from new, but they are made of tin foil and meccano bits and deteriorate very quickly so I wouldn't recommend an old one.
Be warned, the 1.4i has a 0-60 of about 15 seconds and can be burnt off by your average Nova 1.2, lack of pull means changing into 2nd for the very slightest incline, and they gulp the petrol (expect around 27mpg with combined city/motorway use)
Took the Lupo in for a service this morning and drove away in an Audi A2 1.4 TDI. courtesy car. Cor, it don't half shift! Thinking I was doing about 50 I glanced down at the speedo and saw an indicated 80 (on a private road of course). HJ's car by car breakdown has it as a three cylinder, you'd never believe it the way it drives.
But, oh those horrible A pillars. Big and wide, positioned so that in narrow town streets pedestrians stepping off the pavement between the parked cars are completely obscured just at the critical moment. This alone would make me think twice about buying one. Shame though, very impressive ride and handling. The Lupo is going to feel like a tractor when I get it back. Read more

Seen a few over the last week (1000 miles). Is it the shape of the future? Hope not - I think it's awful!

I (think I) have finally sorted this problem which I reported a few months ago, where a relay chatters behind the driver's dash. Initially identified with 3000 rpm, then with gusty wind or occasionally a water-splash. Located a dodgy wire connection (an add-on with the alarm) which caused the chatter, behind the n/s headlamp. Luckily not somewhere in the wiring loom! Read more
Sorry, but can't help with the relay problem on your 205 - never had any problems on my 3 GTi's. However, I DO have an occasional chattering relay on my present 306. It appears to be associated with operation of the stalk switches on the steering wheel. Anyone, had similar?

Jeremy Clarkson, the most opinionated man in motoring, is coming home to Top Gear, on BBC Two.
Clarkson has signed a two year deal that will see him once again presenting the leading motoring show that he helped to make so popular. In addition to his work on the new series, he will continue to write for BBC Worldwide's 'Top Gear' magazine. He will be contributing exclusive road tests, features, opinions and the column he has penned since the market-leading magazine was launched in 1993.
Commenting on his return to the series, Clarkson said: "The motorist is under attack from all sides, and this gives me the chance to fight back on behalf of all us petrol-heads."
The renewal of his contract will also see him working on other new programmes for the BBC.
Jeremy Clarkson will be giving motoring manufacturers more sleepless nights when Top Gear returns to our screens later this year. Read more
I'll look forward to that.

Sorry to hijack the thread back to Land Rovers, but, boy do they have bumpers! And they are bolted straight to the chassis.
Last night I had the job of pulling out a yew tree. The tow hitch is bolted to the bumper; attached a strong rope between the hitch and tree, selected low/reverse and out she came. Try that with a plastic bumper.
I did make a point of suggesting RainX Cleaning compound - not ordinary RainX Repellant.
