Not really motoring related, and kinda aimed at Martyn/Steve, but....

I want to set up a forum on my website. I'm really impressed with the phorum and by the looks of their website its free. My questions are:

1. Is it free?

2. Will it run on win2k?

2. How do I install it?

Has anybody else had experience with the phorum or any other good forum software?

I'll email direct if this post is a problem, and someones willing to help!

Cheers guys,

Mark. Read more

looks like Ive spoke too soon, because it appears that the threads with the most recent replys now appear at the top of the main listing.

Just had the car in the garage for some diagnostics.

They have found the Mass Air Flow sensor to be giving a faulty reading.

The problem with the car was sometimes when started up it would run under powered for a few miles then cure itself. Sometimes it would run fine from startup, others it would not. It never became underpowered mid journey while the engine was running though it would sometimes if the engine was stopped then started again.

Does this sound like a faulty Air flow sensor or is it more likely to be something else? I don't want to shell out £180 to find out it's not the problem.

What I find strange is how the problem only ever seems to occur following startup, not mid journey.

Also how come there were no error codes stored in the management system. I've been told it only logs them if the sensor reads badly for a certain period of time or if the sensor value is over a certain threshold.

I believe the car performance is because the management system is going into "limp home mode" so why is the engine management light not coming on and a faultcode logged?

The car will run underpowered for 5-10miles max then run fine.

What do you all think?

Thanks,

One of the functions incorporated into the system is a 'burn off' period when the engine is switched off. This momentarily heats the hotwires up to clean off any deposits covering the wires. Could be a fault here which occasionally works only when you switch off and restart.

Is there any one out there who could recommend a good car (preferably recent 2nd hand) that will tow a large horse box and also be a pleasure to drive for every day use, seating 7 or 8. All opinions welcomed! Read more

Well I mentioned the defender which in my book encompasses the both the 90 and 110

I've seen many adverts for ex-police cars specialists {one in Blackpool in always in North west autotrader}.

They sell for very very low prices.

Are they likely to be totally knackered, or are they a good cheap buy?

Expect they'll be basic spec too?

Any one ever bought one, and / or tried to re-sell one?

I was thinking of an Ex M-Way patrol unmarked {blue?} Vovlo V70 Estate, T5 or similar.

Any thoughts please.

I would not touch an ex police car with a barge pole.
The majority are operational vehicles and so have a hard life. If its met or a large city force then a lot of time is racing through traffic with slow stuff between. Also with cut backs servicing going out to private tender its not as good or as reliable as it once was.
Hope this helps

what other newish car bodies other than the v/w passat are galvanised. why is this not a strong plus point when buying a used car Read more

It does,in most areas it represents the other 1%.
Provided it has sufficient engine.
we had a coevel Gti for some years,it was dynamically excellent, but noisy and unrefined to an unecessary extent. For all the fuss you would expect about 150 bhp,not the already only barely enough 112.
But at least it did not have the two hundredweight of unaccountable extra weight of the mark 3.
or the american suspension pack.
or the no extra room.

The handbook says change the gbox oil evrey mjr service on my Civic vti, but my dad says he seems to remember HJ saying somewhere just change it once after it is run in.
It is 91k and fhsh, so it will have been done afew times now.
Do I take the advice to leave it, or should I change it?
Does it make any difference that thin engine oil is used in this gearbox?

Thanks,

Audi don't have problems with transmissions? Ho ho ho. Audi dealers have made a fortune replacing differential crown/pinion assemblies on automatics.

Can anyone shed some light how u do this, do u just type in the pin? Rather worried that if we faff around with it, it will lock its self.

The car in question is a bog standard L reg 2.0 ghia Mondeo, we have got the handbook [no help] haynes manual [no help] but no radio manual [so no help]

Thanks in advance as we are missing our acoustic accompliment.

I am thinking of buying a diesel car, and have noticed on some models they mention a catalytic converter. I thought that these where only fitted to petrol models or am I wrong? Read more

Thank you for the comprehensive reply. I stand corrected, although I didn't mean to imply that only small diesels produced particles - as you say, the larger they are, the less harmful they seem to be (presumably because they are less likely to be inhaled) but any sort of smoke is pretty objectionable.

I must admit to a strong aversion to diesels, largely because of the noise and the smell (and the terror of spilt fuel on roundabouts when I'm on two wheels), but also because their alleged 'greenness' seems unfounded. I gather than garages run them hard to clear the soot before checking their emissions for MOT, which seems to defeat the object!

I see Halfords are selling a 5/40 synthetic oil for £19.99, any comments as to its suitablity.

Will there be any problems in going from semi-synthetic to a fully synthetic in a car with 68K miles, P reg.

If this message has appeared elsewhere. OOPs.

Many thanks in advance. Read more

The xudt has done 172k in 7 years on this oil changing routine and if anything, its actually better than its ever been.I'm going to try to get it to 250k.

I've just filled in one of these but for some reason it went into the section I was actually reading. So, if you have seen this before apologies.
I bought a polo 14 months ago and it proved to be too uncomfortable to drive even though I had the pedals extended. As it was costing a fortune in oesteopathy bills decided to get rid. So far have tried A3 - too uncomfortable, Alpha 147 - quite comfortable but not sure about selespeed and Honda Civic - not that comfortable. I am now thinking about looking at smaller cars (although not sure that that should make any difference). I can't be the only 5'1" driver out there so your experiences/recommendations gratefully received.

Try a Focus - remarkable seats and ride quality, won't appeal to badge snobs with more money than sense though.
