Hi all,
I have a '94 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 CDX which has air conditioning.
Late last year, my alternator went and I had a new one fitted, but it appears that now my air conditioning doesnt work. I press the button and nothing happens - it doesnt even light up. I think it stopped working when my alternator packed in, but cant be too sure because I dont use it that often.
Any ideas? I have already checked the plug connection which goes into the back of the compressor, and it appears to be fine. I understand it will probably need re-gassing by now, but are these symptomes common for this?
Regards

Hi all
a quick question, i recently used "ZX1 Extralube" in my fuel tank (stupidly putitng in 100ml instead of 50ml) since which the car has lost power on acceleration. This
is an intermittent problem which comes and goes, i am still on the same tank of diesel too. Does anyone know if this is a normal consequnece of over use? Or is it a conincidence and i have in fact a much more serious problem?
thanks all

It could be that you have a hole in your fuel line if you have air bubbles in the fuel line. Most filters are on the suction side so air can be sucked in anywhere between the tank and the lift pump.
I have tried all types of fuel additives in my small diesel (for free as part of my job), although not a scientific study, I found that any differences in fuel economy or performance, were dur more to a placebo effect than anything else.martin wrote:

Hi
I'm after a bit of a straw poll. I want a big comfortable ride and cannot decide which to go for.
BMW 5 series seems to have more problems with duff service records.
Maxima QX 3.0 get slated over here but are very popular in th US but I cant find one
XJ6 3.2 seems to be my fave at the moment.
Looking for a 93-5 and to pay about £3000. Now that you have picked yourself up off the floor from laughing so hard. My current car is a SAAB 9000 that I picked up for 1500 four years ago and has been a dream, it can be done. Read more
Boris,
If the Saab is nearly scrapworthy, why not take all the easily removeable bits off (keep in the garage for when you need them - or advertise and have a garage sale), scrap the rest, and buy another similar model Saab...
Martin.
I have a Midnight blue civic sport Y registration with some stratches which are not very deep, but still very visible. [ this could have been down by someone pushing a trolley against the car.
What can I do without having to go to a Honda dealer and having to pay astronomical sums.

Get a quote from a scratch / dent master style repair company and an independant body shop. These companies seem to be poping up everywere cashing in on the high cost of returning a mobility / personal lease car with minor scratches and dents.
This is becoming a dying product locally, anyone like to reccomend an additive to use with unleaded petrol and/or where I can purchase the stuff in a larger container, the local shops sell weeny little bottles.
Also thanks to all those who advised me on recognising unleaded heads for mini engines. Read more
check out www.leadedpetrol.co.uk/ for where you can get leaded.
Just when you thought cars were getting safer .
A study carried out by the University of Umea Sweden tested the inside of many new cars for electrosmog.A safe level for a pregnant women or young child is 1.6 Microtesla, the volvo S60,V70 and S80 had 18 microtesla and the Ford Focus only 0.06.In fact sitting in a Volvo is the same as sitting under a Pylon by a mobile phone mast using your phone with your head beside a Microwave oven. The mind boggles who is the going to be the first to sue Volvo for catching cancer from their cars Read more
James - The inverse square law is indeed what my argument relied on. I didn't realise that there were plans for 'lamp-post' masts.
Now that really does make me nervous!

Hello there,
I've been lurking round the site, read up and it helped me come to the decision to buy a Rover 620SLi 1995 N reg, which is a sweet car with lots of gadgets and gizmos for the dosh I paid.
It has one silly niggly problem though. The central lock works fine, but the near side back door doesn't want to know. Its not a major problem, more one of those irritating things, having to reach in and unlock it from the inside. If anyone has any ideas, I would be most grateful.
Thanks very much.
PS, HJ has come across the bizz on the radio Read more
Thank you all! I'll give some of those a try. Unfortunately I live too far away from Cambridge, so I'll have a little tinker around myself.
Thanks for your help!
Read with interest the letter in today's DT, about coking of engine. I had a problem with my Subaru chuffing out a cloud of smoke when changing up under hard acceleration. Various on the backroom suggested worn valve stem seals. However haven't used anything to cure/prevent apart from using only Shell petrol, this has cured the problem, interestingly filled up with supermarket fuel the other day (as nearly ran out couldn't make to a Shell station) and occasionally would have smoke behind when changing up.
Can I use Shell Optimax in my 1990 Subaru Justy GLII 4wd 1189 cc (carbed model) or will it be bad for it/a waste of money? Read more
H.J. always says stay clear of supermarket fuels (despite their claims of detergent additives) and recommends Shell or Texaco, what about Esso because the garage is just down the road and there is 60p per £20 off!!?
Can any of you folks suggest a good Jeep / 4 by 4 for under £10K Read more
I drive a Vauxhall Monterey (rebadged Isuzu Trooper). Higer spec than Isuzu, less notes. Very cheap now. But can you live with a Vauxhall badge?
IMHO key issues in 4 x 4
1/ Impact suriviability. Why are people scared of flying? Driving is far more dangerous.
2/Deteriorating state of UK roads (see recent threads on damaged alloys)
3/ Tire costs not that bad if you shop around - i am paying c £55/corner fitted for a 50/50 road/trail tyre.
4/Fun. I occasionally bash around my brother-in-law's farm fields. A good place to learn vehicle control.
5/Towing. Nothing better to tow anything with, providing the hitch height is set properly.
6/Buy a diesel! I can get c.30+mpg from my 3.1TD. Mrs Govier gets considerably less, but does keep the injectors cleaned..

Number 1 daughter has just had her '95 Fiesta 1.3 MOTd in Newcastle by a garage chain which I've found to be OK in the past. They've said that the gear-box mountings are worn and should be replaced and this is a v. common failing on Fiestas. Having rear-ended someone in December and had bonnet, rad., fron replaced by main dealer she asked if this could be the reason but they said might have contributed but the fault was commonly due to just wear.
This is news to me and HJs car-by-car breakdown doesn't mention it for the Fiesta.
Can anyone confirm that this is the case for Fiestas? Is it even part of the MOT/DoT testing procedure?
Many thanks in advance
