Please can someone help explain what these figures mean in relation
to engine performance? They are the specs for the Yaris Petrol 1.3
versus Yaris Diesel 1.4.

Petrol 1.3 63kW/86bhp 124Nm/4100rpm

Diesel 1.4 55kW/75bhp 170Nm/2000rpm

Am I correct in thinking the diesel will produce 170 doodahs of pull at 2000 rpm
whereas the petrol will produce only 124 doodahs of pull at 4100 rpm?

Strong Diesel. Weak Petrol engine.

The 86bhp of the petrol engine sounds better than the 75bhp of the diesel.

Strong Petrol. Weak Diesel engine.

Please can someone help me to understand how this all relates as it
is quite confusing?

Thanks very much. Read more

I thought HJ in his column categorically said two way diesel cats were rather more reliable. Will have to read it again methinks to see if I am going completely batty. If that is what HJ did say that's good enough pour moi.

I HATE INSURANCE COMPANIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am thinking of buying a house and I am adding up my monthly outgoings for the morgage peole, and with all the talk of insurance going up again I thought I had better see how much my insurance is likely to got up when I renew in the summer . So off I go to elephant.co.uk and starta quote for a random name, same age, postcode etc... I start off with a basic no mods no accidents quote and then add on the 'extras' to get an idea of a price of each of my black marks.

It appears that I get a better price if I put my two no fault claims in as fault claims where I have lost my no claims !?!

Perhpas I should add in a few made up convictions!!!!!!

Perhaps instead of calculating a figure they just generate a random number! Read more

My 4 and a half year old 2.0 litre Carina has completed 57000 trouble-free miles running on Mobil 1.
is it time for a timing belt change and should I do the pulleys/tensioners and end stops ? Read more

I have a 1991 Carina 2 - with the 2-litre 3SFE engine - which now has 147k miles on it and drives better than my 12000 mile Xantia.

I changed the cam belt at 120k as although the car has a full history (!) there was no mention of a belt change so I was getting nervous.

After doing it, ( a horrible, incredibly difficult job on the Carina which almost reduced me to tears, and I've changed dozens of cambelts over the years on al sorts of things including Citroen ZX TD's without problems) I studied the handbook in some detail and came to the conclusion that Mr Toyota recommends a 60k change interval - for taxis and police cars - but no change interval at all for vehicles in other use - either time or mileage.

I then had a very god look at the belt which I'd taken off - which had 'Toyota Motor' on it and an elderly but completely sound appearance. Quite a bit of belt dust in the housing. I would put money on this having been the original.

As someone else said, this is a Toyota. Fed it decent oil and leave it alone unless Mr Toyota tells you otherwise - this is no mortal vehicle!

Having recieved good advice on my radiator issues about 12 months ago from you guys I have another small issue.

The radiator is a new one, well one year old, and doesn't leak at all or to my knowledge have any airlocks as bleeding was carried out as per suggestions and worked very well.

In the last week the temperature guage in the car has been fluctuating between 80 and 90oC when in the past it would remain at 80oC all the time without movement unless in traffic (a very rare occurance). It is used for 50 mile each way motorway journeys eah day and rarely at under 60mph in freeflowing traffic.

Any suggestions?? Dodgy radiator? Dodgy thermocouple? Very accurate thermocouple!! Dodgy water pump?

Cheers

I have an Apr 2001 xsara 90hp HDi LX, at present i have a problem with drivers side front suspension/balancing? At high speed or enthusiactic (sp) driving the wheel thumps along the road (not really wobble), been to citroen garage (PC Tonkins, Cornwall) with no joy and £60 out of my pocket for 4 wheel alignment, the result was front wheels ok, but back wheels out: left rear 0.6mm (spec range 1.75 - 2.75mm) and right rear 0.1mm (same range). But they are none adjustable therefore will be like that for eva unless new parts fitted. Cant understand how this could happen? They said could be due to parking bumps on curb? Possible? Still thumps along road! There was a recall for fornt suspension pivots, wot were the symptons of this? Same problem again?

Any similar problems anybody? Any replys please Read more

Have you had the wheels balanced on the car. If not the problems could be with driveshafts, disc, hub, etc being out of balance. I have cured such problems in the past by fitting jubilee clips to the drive shaft, although I did
have the luxury of strobescopic balancing gear. You could try fitting a clip to the drive shaft to see if this alters the characteristics. When I used to work for a main dealer I was always supprised to find that although distances between front and back wheels were always out it did not seem to have any noticeable
effect when driving.

Seems OGL* is scheduled for another appearance on LBC this Saturday.

1) who's listening ?
2) anyone know what time (current UK time) ? Their website doesn`t show it.
3) who`s got the wotsits to review him in the same way you do Driven/Top Gear ? (not me).

Also, HJ, I know that you`ve done this stuff for years without my help (interference) but would you like me to prepare a crib sheet for you listing all the possible answers in case someone rings up with a Freelander query ? - its not a long list !

And, LBC have a mail address. Anybody asks you a difficult question - like which makes the best boat anchor, the V6 or the Diesel Freelander, I`ll mail you the answer from your own website, so tell the girlie on the radio with you to pay attention.

I`m still trying to work out whether or not I could get a Brazilian to ring you from Rio with a problem with his local dealer.

your adoring fan,

Mark.

Bit disappointed with Brewer tonight who I think is the best on TV for motoring programmes.
His Vectra putdown portraying its dullness by watching paint dry and grass grow seemed to be an imitation of Clarkson who is my least favourite.
Mind.....having a Vectra myself does make me a bit predjudiced..
Now if he wants to see true absolute boredom he should watch the curling on winter olympics. I sit in amazement at two roadsweepers working with a speed and enthusiasm that our long gone council sweepers never displayed.

That's an interesting phenomenon.

When the traffic lights are out at any major junctions here, the usual queues seem to disappear, traffic flows freely and there are no accidents. makes you wonder why we have traffic lights at all, just no priority junctions.
