Hi,

Can anyone advise on the penalty/charge/result in being caught driving without a current valid MOT please?

Any advice much appreciated...

Thanks,

Ref. the MID, I wonder how I will get on with my Traders policy, as none of my vehicles are logged against the policy. I just tell them what I have at renewal time, but not the reg. numbers.

KB.

Anyone know if you can buy a syphon kit to do this, or anything that can be made to do the job? Do new cars have anti-syphon devices to prevent said practice?

I tried sucking it out once when I was 17 (I'm 51 now) and never forgot the experience. Can't actually remember why I wanted to but guess there must have been a reason at the time. Suffice to say that I don't intend going in for midnight petrol stealing forays from neighbours, but would like to be able to remove fuel from my own tank.

Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks Sierraman, just bought it from reno car dealer in western avenue. Costed me 51 pounds! It included the standard pipes and all, but I guess that would have been easy to fit. Saw the message a bit late :( Wonder if the ebay ones would have been perfect for my Reno Clio Diesel though..
Even after placing the Primer Bulb, the car stops after 5 mins or so, I then squeeze the primer and it starts after hunting for a while. Have got it booked for this friday at a local garage - a supposedly diesel expert! (The guy at the garage suspects that the fuel pump inside the fuel tank could have gone off and might need to be replaced!) Keeping my fingers crossed.

A question from someone new to diesel.....
If a petrol car runs out of fuel I just stick some more in and go.
I've heard that a diesel has to be put through a certain procedure; 're-priming' or something like that.
Any advice please!
I'm thinking of getting an N-reg Mondeo turbo diesel.

Ian, from what you describe, I am sure the LR engine was the 2.5 litre normally aspirated diesel which is not (usually) self-priming.

I only asked as the 200Tdi is self-priming (if memory serves me correctly) - all it needs is a few litres of diesel (I could quote the exact amount if I could be bothered to look it up), a bit of turning over on the starter and hey presto!

I once ran out of diesel on the M5 at midnight on a Sunday driving back to Solihull in a prototype 200Tdi Defender fitted with an automatic gearbox and towing a car-trailer. Luckily, I had stopped right by a junction and, once I had hitched several miles to and from an (open) fuel station, the car started first time (which was a relief).

"Oh, yes, I forgot to tell you the fuel gauge is out of calibration," came the response from the engineer running the assesment. Thanks, Mate!

cheers, CMark

Does anyone know what they call the MOT equivalent in the US, is it an annual requirement, and does it compare to ours in its scope?

Man from Nantucket - is a simple query like this enough to tempt you out of lurkdom, Randolph?

Also it would be interesting to hear about the equivalents from other countries, too, eg I've heard that in japan it's near impossible to pass, hence the ample supplies of used parts that get shipped to us, and conversely, i'm not sure how accurate this is, but someone told me that in Australia an MOT is not necessary unless the car is to be sold. I lived in the USA (New York state) for a year and had a beaten up Chrylser to drive around in. The car had 56,000 miles with worn cams and looked like junk. It also had a worn front tyre (bald shoulder). It was a dog.

However, the car was a company pool car and I was advised that its annual "Department of Transportation Inspection" was due. So I took the car to Kwik-Fit type place to get it done..any repair work was covered by the leasing company. The car passed with no work being required..even though the steering had 2" play and the front tyre was knackered.

The speedometer on my 1998 2.1 diesel 406 suddenly started flicking between zero and the speed the car was doing, after going through a torrential downpour in August. The problem remained intermittent until the speedo stopped working altogether last week. It is an electronically driven type, so I replaced the transducer on the gearbox. It then worked perfectly again for two days and about 60 miles before reverting back to the original symptoms (i.e. flicking instantly down to zero and then back to the true speed). I suspected water in the original unit, but the new transducer has replicated the symptoms. I am beginning to suspect a broken wire as periodically everything is o.k. or could it be a fault on the speedo head? Has anybody else had this problem?

Hi I have just aquired a 1.9 ltd 406 the speedo is sticking a lot at 40 mph and the revvy at 2k also the temp sensor doesnt work and the fuel guage seems a lot blower than what I put in, would you say that it is down to the box behind the glovey or maybe the actual clocks? Also if i have to change the clocks what do I do on the next mot if the clocks are significantly lower than the last mot?

Any help is much appreciated....

Does anyone know of a company that can supply me with an inlet manifold to take a turbo for a corsa 1.2 8valve sohc engine. Would the manifold from a 1.5 turbo diesel be a direct fit or not??
I only plan to use a turbo with a low pressure boost so I KNow that internal strengthining will not be required as I have seen this done before but can't seem to find any information on it I have the turbo, intercooler and all the other neccesary bits except the manifold.

Any help with this project including ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance MJ Read more

Thanks Richard! I suspected this might not be the most sensible plan, but thought it was worth asking! Have to admit I have been considering selling mine and upgrading recently, but may be forced to wait another year until money is better, then perhaps the S2 becomes a viable option *evil cackle*

Cheers,

Stuart

Just curious on this one, is it possible to stall an automatic? I suppose not, as the torque convertor takes up the role of an automatic clutch. I ask this because several times I have forgotten to release the parking brake and drove off, I wonder if it really works! I did read in the manual that you should apply the brake lightly when driving from time to time so as to clean the rear drums as they arent self cleaning, I did try this but it made such a frightening noise I decided against it!

Simon

Many modern engines have a valve or other mechanism to maintain the idle speed selected by the engine management system. If there is a fault OR the valve is sticking then a stall can occur as a gear is engaged. Cleaning the idle valve and/or throttle valve should clear the problem but if the sticking is caused by excessive oil blow-by due to engine wear, the problem will simply re-occur.

Hi
Could you give me some advice... I think the clutch bearing in my 1997 Polo saloon is gone...Its making a dreadful screeching noise which ceases when the clutch is engaged.
I have been advised that its quite a large job to change a clutch bearing and i would probably be better off getting a brand new clutch.
Is this right?

My car is making lost of noise but when i press down the clutch it stops and sounds perfect what could the problem be ?...

I have a 2.5 yr old 1.8 Elegance with 18000 mls on.
At the start of the summer I noticed a slight squeal on the rear brakes which disapeared after pulling away. My conclusion was a sticky caliper.
The symptoms got worse. So much so that at the height of summer with 27 degrees of heat the squeal refused to go away and got worse. A noise louder than a sqealing fan belt and permanant.
I stoped for ten minutes and the noise cleared.
Vauxhall gave a quick response. "There is a problem and we are replacing rear calipers on some vehicles".
Unfortunatley, the day they checked the car the weather was cold and overcast and the squeal failed to appear. No other fault was found with discs or pads. I could pay for the work - £400 or wait. I'm waiting as I don't expect a repeat until next summer.

Has anyone else suffered and should Vauxhall recall? The noise is very worrying when the car is full of family and you can hear at top speed on the motorway. Read more

I know this is a very old post but I'm having the same issue too on a 2005 Zafira A.

The back brakes on this car have always been really noisy, especially when they get wet and I first start driving (I guessed that the noise when they get wet is just the pads getting wet or something).

But for the past few days we've noticed that when reversing the rear brakes have started making a squeaking noise (it's so loud that dog has started barking at the car when I arrive home - so even the dog is noticing it!). A few weeks ago we had the brakes checked to ensure there was plenty of pad left, and the guy that checked them said the it was only the inner pad on the drivers side that was slightly worn but nothing that needed any immediate attention. He did also ask when was the last time we had the brakes serviced.

We had the car serviced back in October and the guy that serviced it then said that he only needed to change the oil and oil filter and charged us just under £100. I presume that when he serviced it he would have checked to see if the brakes needed servicing, I notice Vauxhall dealers have different levels of servicing but the guy we go to doesn't offer the different levels he just says he does what ever needs doing at the time - so does that mean he's doing a basic service or is he checking all the bits that would normally be checked on a full service and then just charging us for the bits he needs to replace? This is our first car since leaving the motability scheme so it's a bit confusing as to what a service actually is as on the motability scheme it was all taken care of for us (plus I have an autistic spectrum disorder and don't fully understand cars - my main interest is more computers than cars), and does a general service normally include servicing the brakes or is that a seperate service? When we used to have motability car serviced they came up with a tick sheet showing us a map of the car with all different information like tread depth, brake wear, etc but this guy didn't produce any type of map of the car to show me what he'd checked - somebody else told me that this is normal as it's only main dealers that do that, is that right?

Also the car was only MOT'd in October, the MOT was done a week before the service. We had the car MOT'd at the same place that asked if the brakes had been serviced (Gatechange Garage in Tenbury), but we had the service done at the garage we originally bought the car from (Overton Service Station in Ludlow) 'cos the place we bought the car from doesn't do MOT's and when we bought the car the garage owner sold it to us for what we considered an absolute bargain for a 2005 plate 7 seater vehicle, and so we like to use him regularly for things like servicing as he's a really nice person and it was so good of him to sell us the car so reasonably, and also he helped us rescue the car when we drove it into a flood and got it back to life which saved us a fortune on insurance premiums.
