Hi

Looking for some advice about 4x4's. Due to recent move to the top of the North Yorkshire Moors and the arrival in feb of our first baby, we are looking to buy a 4x4, but as a confirmed SUV sceptic I'm a bit lost in this world of transfer boxes etc, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We have about 9K to spend and it has got to be able to accomodate the two of us, the new arrival and 4 big irish setters comfortably enough to travel down to Devon (750 mile round trip approx). We have narrowed it down to two, both diesel, but I can't decide between them. First is the Isuzu Trooper LWB and second is the Toyota Landcruiser. Which ever we pick has got be reliable and last for a good few years. Can anyone offer advice?

Just for info; ones we have ruled out (although I'm open to a persausive argument) are: Fourtrak - only two door as far as I know, Disco - poor reliability and a bit "townie" (apologies to all disco owners), Maverick/Terrano 2 - a little small, and Range Rover - we don't, unforunately, own a stately home!

Thankyou very much in advance. Read more

How about a Subaru Legacy 4WD Estate + a non-depreciating no tax classic insurance Land-Rover?

Help!!

I've just snapped the spark plug clean off on my '95 1.1 Fiesta. The Dam thing had rusted paper thin above the threads and took no force at all. Any suggestions on how best to get the remaining bit out would be much appreciated!! I'm at a stagewhere you can see right through into the cylinder.

Thanks in advance. Read more

Well I tried the easy out option and failed miserably!! It is well and truly rusted in there, so this afternoon I shall be taking the head off and getting it machined at a local workshop. Thanks to everyone who replied, and lets hope I don't require anymore help from here on in. Did I just tempt fate!!!!

Usually when cold or at low revs. engine fails to pick-up to the point of almost stalling. Feels like fuel starvation but picks up if I change down. No warning lights and main dealer is hopeless as computer says nothing is wrong. (What happened to mechanics?). Anyone any ideas please? Read more

Main dealer computer wont pick up any fault unless it happens while testing, the ecu does not have a memory.so any fault is not logged,ps which 420 are we talking about, tourer or newer shape?.but apart from that suggests inlet manifold leak to ecu ie MAP sensor, that at the moment is a guess

As my car has now reached 60000 miles would it be wise to start using an injector additive. I was thinking of using the VW one that was recommended some time ago . I don,t have any problems with the car (kiss of death) but as much as possible I like to keep ahead of any problems before they are likely to occur.

Redex Injector Cleaner ......at £10 per
litre is ridiculously expensive.

Not if, like me, you've just paid £4.50 for 177ml of Redline SI 2 injector cleaner it isn't.
Mind you, it is friendly to cats, and is fully endorsed by BMW.

Am I the only one who's been waiting a long time for a recipe to be posted? Thanks again, and thanks to you Carl2 for bringing up the subject. I'm making a copy of it straight away in case like a lot of things recently it falls victim to a spot of enthusiastic moderation!!!!

Hi All,

Does anyone have any bad experiences of Continental tyres on the Omega.

My fronts (235/45 ZR 17's) are suffering from an unusual tread wear pattern on the inside. The tread pattern seems to have some tread blocks work more than others - odd though it might seem. This was pointed out by a Vx dealer to me and would explain some strange vibrations that I've experienced through the 'wheel.

The tyres were supplied by Micheldever who have told me that they have seen this problem with Conti's before and that I may be able to get a refund if the tyres are found to be at fault - i.e my tracking isn't out.

I really can't see how this could have happened as the wear pattern is visible.

In anticipation.

One in 10 drivers can barely read a number plate from the minimum distance required by law, random eyesight tests found.
Eyesight charity, the Eyecare Trust, teamed up with the police to stop drivers and carry out spot checks.

They found 4.8% of the 546 people asked were unable to read a number plate 67ft or 20.5m away, while 9.7% struggled to make out the letters.
One man had to be taken within two metres of the number plate in order to be able to read it.

On a previous thread, the case for 'oldies' was discussed - having to just sign a form saying they were still capable of driving...

Legal question - is there any test of drivers who have been in accidents to determine whether they can see properly?

I know the local system for 5-yearly license renewal includes an eye check, and a possible 'must wear glasses/contact lenses when driving' clause on the license.

Toad, of Toad Hall.

Just a point when did you last have your eyes tested
properly by an Optician? Quite a few by accounts on site
missing seeing speed cameras?

My father used to claim that I got my points because of bad observation and that I should pay up like a man because it showed i wasn't thinking.

Now he's on 6 and I have a clean ticket. ;-)

Schadenfreude.

Was wandering around town yesterday, and saw a UK plated R-reg Range Rover parked at a meter, which had been ticketed.
For the R60 fine (4 quid to you!) is it going to be worth the hassle for the Traffic Department to trace said driver if he doesn't pay?
On the next corner, parked across a pedestrian crossing, was an old Durban-registered Golf, with a ticket stuck to the window. There were the pink remnants of at least 15 other tickets on the glass - obviously a serial offender.
I wonder why they bother just slapping a ticket on - it seems matey doesn't give a monkeys...
Surely in a case like this the solution is to tow the vehicle away (as I wrote, was parked on a ped. crossing) and only release it when the fines were paid... or is that just too logical? Read more

THe Growler

I don't even need a ticket to get towed. A bogus towing company can come along and take my car away then demand ransom for its release...

My mate has a 94 L Mondeo 1.8 LX Auto, has done 90,000 miles, was regularly serviced at a main dealers by the elderly bloke who owned it for 8 years, my mate bought it and let it go about 5,000 - 6,000 miles past it's due service, before having a major service at the Ford dealers today (Yeah, I know he's an idiot to ruin a perfect history on an 8 year old car but there you go...).

Over the past week or two (before the service) the car tends to cut out at low revs when stationary, as far as I know this happens in Neutral or Drive/Reverse. When the engine is started, the revs will go up to about 1100 and then over a period of about 2 - 3 seconds steadily die until the car cuts out. This can happen whether the enigne is hot or cold (I think) Otherwise the car is driving fine.

Can any clever people suggest something that could be at fault? He pointed it out at the dealers before the service and when we collected the car, it did idle OK so we thought that they'd fixed it. Unfortunately it's still doing it. :( So he would appreciate any help that may cut down on the expensive diagnosis process...

Blue {P}

Thanks for the ideas people, will start investigating these as soon as we can... Although he reckons it hasn't been as bad lately, it now tries to stall but the revs come back up at the last second and then it just idles...
