Am looking at buying a Honda in India. Was looking at getting leather seats so I went to a specialist who would get the interior seats, doors, gear shift gaiter + steering wheel for around 350 pounds. A mercedes would cost around 400 pounds and they have done quite a few. The finish is excellent and you can choose from 40 shades. I really wonder how Mercedes can charge over 1500 pounds for optional leather. Read more
I have an intermittent fault on this.
Sometimes it suddenly blows out cold air even when the temp is set high.
Ocassionally it packs in altogether.
Sometimes (on auto) no air comes out of the middle vents.
I've tried replacing the control unit but I still have problems.
Anyone got any ideas on this.
The car is a 1997 2.5 CDX auto.
The main dealers say they can find nothing wrong.
Any good climate control service centres recommended?
Thanks.

A passenger in my Focus (2yrs old, 2.0L, average millage) recently pointed out a problem that had been at the back of mind and slowly getting worse. My car has a vibration at speed. This feeling of vibratiuon has developed into steering wheel twitching at certain speeds which if you release the wheel is clearly visable. Some days are worse than others, which doesn't make sense since a mechanical problem cannot cure its self then reappear at a later stage so I guess it is more related to the road surface etc.
I have had the wheels checked for balance etc - my first thought, since it is the most obvious potential problem, but they are all fine. I have had the car since new, and have not hit a curb or other obstacle that can explain any recent damage!
People; your thoughts?
Cheers,

Isn't it possible to adjust the tracking on the rear wheels of Focus's? I saw a 99 Focus with uneven rear tyre wear at the dealers, it looked like the kind you get on a front wheel when it is out of alignment, could a similar problem be causing this?
This is a query on behalf of Junior (the fryup and Coca Cola freak) who is considering wheter to add a nitrous kit.
Until recently I had assumed that boosting the engine with a nitrous bottle was a clandestine pursuit, but I was surprised when I discovered that it's perfectly legal.
So my question is, is it desirable?
The car is a Honda Vtec.
I understand that a problem with nox is that while on modern engines the induction and ignition of the petrol air mixture is achieved with incredibly precise timing, it becomes difficult to get the timing right with the different reqirements of the nox enriched mixture.
It occurs to me that when the Vtec (variable valve timing) kicks in suddenly at a certain r.p.m. the effect with nitruos could be disruptive and therefore particulrly damaging.
So what's it to be, Backroom? 'you're only young once' or 'don`t do it kid' ? Read more
That's my new bit of knowledge for the day.
Air is 76% (I think) nitrogen. In combustion, nitrogen is inert, but it has an effect in that it absorbs heat and takes the heat out of the process with the exhaust gases. So, air & acetylene will burn, but oxygen and acetylene will burn much hotter.
Similarly, one of the early Apollo space missions came to grief because the astronauts were breathing oxygen. A spark cremated 3 astronauts. Later missions used air.
Try the nitro at your risk, but keep some change handy for a new engine. The insurers won't approve.
Does anyone know if, I transfer my cherished number to my replacement car, can I carry on using the same tax disc ? the car is the same make, and technically will carry the same number plate.

Very interesting Mr Fox.
Assuming the old and new cars are the same make.
You have a car ABC123 on cherished number and are using it with Excise licence No D 123456 (Dec 2002)issued to ABC123 so all is in order.
You buy a new car on which you are going to use the VRM ABC123
which has the earlier issued Excise licence so theoretically the excise duty has been paid to the end of the year on D 123456 for ABC123.
So you put the Licence on the new car and declare SORN on the old one if you havent got rid of it.
So as is suggested you have to tell DVLA who will then issue a replacement Licence which will show exactly the same partics for VRM ABC123 expiring Dec.
All very complicated but as the vehicles will not share the same chassis/engine number then I presume DVLA WILL have to be informed to marry the two up. If you go to their Web Site there is facility I believe to send an E Mail to clarify the position and what to do.

Who now owns these brand names, BMW or MG / Rover.
So sad that the new Mini is a BMW {however, possibly a better engineered car as a BMW than the now small car maker - MG Rover, could have produced?.
Any chance of seeing a new Stag, Spitfire or Healey 3000?
If so who will have the rights to the names?

IIRC both Citroen and Saab arrived at FWD before Austin. In the case of Citroen, nearly thirty years before the Mini. What the Mini did have, however, was a funky shape and clever suspension. Not much new beyond that though.

Does anyone know the shelf life of AF?
I have a partly-used can of unknown age (although probably about 2 or 3 years old)
Do the anti-corrosion properties decline with age? Read more
Five years plus. As LZ says - it must be in a sealed container and not premixed nor contaminated. It's the anti-corrosion properties that go - same as when it's in use.
I bought this from new and have had numerous problems such as electronic service indicator counting down very very quickly, carpet coming adfift of the trim, exterior door rubbing strips coming adrift of the door, a breakdown whilst driving, steering lock/ignition key recall problem, glovebox release mechanism broken, horn intermittently not working, paint chipping on bonnet despite mainly slow speed driving, hatchback would not close until shut several times, rear seat velour stitching not finished, remote central locking intermittently not working, electronic oil level indicator reading empty despite being virtually full, etc
nearly all are now resolved but very frustrating and lets the car down - anybody else with simailar experiences ?????

Hype.
I've gonna get into trouble for this, but as I sat behind a Yellow MG ZR or whatever they're calling the 214 / Civic(+3 generations) it struck me that they make some horrible cars these days.
That is quite possibly down to BMW who used the company and ran off with one of its best brands. Or it was down to British Aerospace who did nothing with the company. Or was it down to poor management who decided to ditch the link with Honda. Or was it down to an ailment born of the troubles in the 70s?
But then who cares? Your point is that if it had a Rover badge on it, no-one would be falling over themselves to get one. I agree with you completely. The state Rover finds itself in means that a new Mini would probably be a Metro/114 with a new badge a large body kit or another incarnation of the 214. And wouldn't be half the car it is.

It's the car we'd all love Rover to be building but they've not had the investment capability to develop it. BMW have, and they've done a good job so far as I can tell. They're at least building it in the UK.
There has been a lot of hype over the MINI, but that's because BWM have probably invested the GDP of a small country to raise its profile.
But don't write the car off as simply hype. Drive one and realise that it is fun, to drive, to sit in and to look at. It has been well promoted (hyped), but underneath the shiny brochures and clothing displays it is an excellent car.

I am currently looking to buy one in the £20 - £24k range and the collective knowledge of the Back Roomers would be greatly appreciated.
1). What engine. I am thinking along the lines of the 320, probably a straight 6. Would it be worth spending extra to get the later V6.
2). Does high mileage make that much difference. Mercs have a rep for going for ever. Are there any problems associated with high milers and at what sort of mileage.
3). Are they noisey when driven with the soft top up. I tried an M3 soft top and the drumming noise over 70 was horrendous. Not condusive to long motorway trips, of which I do quite a few.
4). When were the various facelifts done and what changes were made. It seems that around 95/96 that Air Con became Climate but what else happened through the model years.
5). What is security like. I think a tracker would be a good idea and a lot of them seem to have one but what is the standard alarm immobiliser set up like.
6). The old chestnut....depreciation. My XJR dropped like a stone and SWMBO's RR is doing similar. The SL seems to hold it's price a little better but I suspect I am in for a fair old hit.
7). Do they get significantly cheaper when the sun disappears to the Southern hemisphere like most soft tops.
If anyone has one or owned one previously any help in advising what to look for would be much appreciated. Read more
I would guess an American Information Technology(IT) consultant.
Don't worry about being confused, I work in IT and it took a minute to figure out. I wonder what a 'yank it' consultant would actually do!
