Just been out driving tonight in my escort.
i was slowing to pull up at a roundabout and put it into 4th. Then as i reached 20 i went to move it into 3rd, but i couldnt it was jammed in 4th.
Eventually after sitting fiddling with the stick i got it into 3rd and moved off. Then as i got going i got back into the other gears. Then once again when i slowed it was stuck in 4th.
Now it wont go into any other gear but 3rd or neutral. It is unbelievbably stiff now.
Any ideas? Is my gearbox dead? if so how much does that set me back?

Hi,
The boot light on my Passat '97 isn't working. I know the light itself is fine because it works if I place a wire to unpainted bodywork. So I figure it must be the switch. There appears to be no simple push switch so I'm assuming the switch is built into the lock (German over engineering?). Does anyone know if the lock can be dimantled and the switch replaced to solve this trifling if annoying problem? Read more
Andrew T, your response to a Passat question taling about rolling ball switches in Peugeot hatches was a while ago but might help me fix a niggle. Is it straightforward to "de-sticky" the rolling ball? (I have a 1996 Peugeot 306 XSI).
BTW, Peugeots with problems seem to appear on every page of "Technical Matters" and that makes me, as a one month old Peugeot owner, feel a little loose in the bowels. I'm saying nothing about my 306 in case the fates are listening.
Why is it that every Smart car is driven by a budding Michael Schumacher with a point to prove?
Every time I see one of these horrid creations, it is being thrashed to within an inch of it's life, such as coming home this evening, with one driving up the middle of a wide A-road, overtaking all the 60MPH traffic, with traffic also coming the other way.
If I was forced to drive one, I would do so as unobtrusively as possible, because the embarrassing looks alone would guarantee too much attention, without poor driving adding to it!

Yep that's how I see them too. The drivers must think they are on a motorbike.
In London many have the name of the firm emblazened on their flanks - to demonstrate the sort of P**** they employ?
My other half has an MGF (massive problems with reliability so far). Anyway the latest problem is fluctuation in the brightness of her headlights easily seen when parked against a wall. The dashboard lights also "flicker" at the same frequency as the headlights.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Had a 96 MGF same prob,changed the alternater,now ok.
I'm looking at buying a Volvo 850 and would like one with a bit poke, so have decided to look at the T-5 and R models.
When looking i found an ad which was selling a T-5R. But the ad also stated that it was not a mere T-5 or R model.
Does this mean there is a 850 T-5, an 850 R and an 850 T-5R???
I thought the 850 R was the badge for the 850 T-5R! Read more
I've got a Peugeot 406 that won't let me change the immobiliser from manual (got to put in the code EVERY time) to automatic (open with key and start engine within 1 minute). I've tried the instructions and followed them to the letter but the next time I unlock the car the code has to go in manually. Is it me or is it Peugeot electrics? Is there a back up battery that remembers the settings that needs changing?
Help!!

I have recently purchased a 2002 Mercedes A-class automatic. The whole vehicle is turning into a nightmare that I wish I had never clapped eyes on, but I have particular concern about the gearbox.
It is supposed to have a "learning" capability that adapts according to one's driving style. I have found that not only does it sometimes refuse to kick down when there is patently spare capacity in lower gears (eg at 2,000 rpm in 3rd it will not drop to 2nd (sometimes)), but at others it will kick down 2 cogs and belt up to the redline. Then again, if you "confuse" the poor thing by rolling almost to a stop in (say) 4th, it takes a good 2 seconds if you plant your foot on the gas to do anything at all.
Has anyone else had experiences with "clever" automatic gearboxes?
Thanks

Very few dealers fully understand auto boxes, many sub out the work to specialists such as www.autotechs.co.uk
Have just tried the link and it doesn't work. Excellent service (and advice) from them 5 years ago (so are they still in business?).
Can anyone help me with this?
I have owned two Golfs and on both of them
there has been an annoying crackling noise
from the speedo/dash area.
This noise comes and goes, does anyone
know of a remedy??
Thanks

I think you'll find it's just your girlfriend's earrings need lubricating!
I'm sorry to raise another example, and I know this topic has been raised before, but this story was run in our local paper (Hull) today....
>An uninsured driver with no licence was fined just £350, despite being in a crash which killed an East Yorkshire paramedic.
And Linda Abey, whose husband Graham died in the smash, has called on the Government to jail motorists who flout the law.
She felt "bitter and angry" after Darren Verrall, 23, was fined at Sleaford Magistrates' Court after he pleaded guilty to careless driving, and driving without insurance or a licence.
He was ordered to pay £175 compensation and £65 court costs.
Mrs Abey accepted the fine was "all he could get" under existing sentencing laws.
But she said: "It is not what we wanted but there's nothing the courts can do until the law is changed.
"There must be a prison sentence."
Mrs Abey and her daughters Laura, 16, and Rebecca, 14, were all seriously injured in the crash on March 1.
The Rover 414 which Verrall had borrowed from his boss careered into them head-on.
In court, prosecutor Karen Walker said debris and skid marks on the A17 near Asgarby, Lincolnshire, indicated Verrall had lost control and veered onto the wrong side of the road.
Mr Abey, 43, who was a paramedic based at Preston Ambulance Station, died at the scene.
Bill Miller, in mitigation, said his client was in a wheelchair for three months after the incident, and had also subsequently taken an overdose.
Mr Miller said: "He will have to face the consequences for the rest of his life.
Mrs Abey said :
"At the moment, the fine is cheaper than insurance or passing a driving test, so people are going to keep on doing it if they don't change the law."<

I find myself defending the Cops once more !
Just for your information about 7 years ago the CPS made available to the Police their criteria for prosecuting accident related offences. What this did was save time for the Police. That is, it became pointless to investigate (in any depth) your routine bump unless the criteria were met. I can tell you that there is a double figure percentage rate where accidents are investigated in accordance with the criteria that never get beyond process stage.... I ain't even going there but what you have are Drivers who are reported for offences but are left dangling for months sometimes before finding out that their summonses were quashed long ago.
Ed, I just read your posting again, properly this time!
I still think it's the selectors, but not the selector fork coming loose. More likely to be the detent (ball & spring, or similar, that keeps the selector in the right position).
