Polo water pump/bearings expired @ 28,000. Should it have lasted longer?

Oh, and what's the second answer to that wretched 'pop-up' question ? anyone?... Read more

RickyBoy

First reg Mar '98 so 4.5 years. 'John The Garage' said it was the second low-mileage Polo water-pump he'd replaced recently and wondered if it was an original part fault?

As Mrs RickyBoy will be settling the bill in this instance I was rather more concerned with obtaining the answer to that question!

Hello Folks,

Anyone know of a decent independent Range Rover specialist in North Yorkshire/Teesside border area, please?

A buddy has been well "done over" by a main dealer.
TIA

Ah! Dwight!

You are not too far from me, then, in Eaglescliffe.

Thanks for the info. Buddy is in Great Broughton, so not too far from Stokesley (2 miles?).

The power of The Back Room! Awesome!

BTW, anything heard of Andy Bairsto, sometime XM pilot, these days?

I've got a 728i E38 '96 BMW. I stupidly purchased a set of original BMW 18" 15- multispoke alloys which I was assured would fit - I drove 200 miles to pick 'em up, tried the back only - and aggghhh!!! On getting home and fitting the fronts I find they foul on the callipers. I guess I could fit a spacer but have no idea where to start or what effect it would have on the handling. Please help........!!!!!!

Question Omega HT Leads
jg

Hi,

Is there a 'real' reason why HT leads for the Omega should cost so much (As you may know they are manufactured in 2 sets of 3 leads, each set costing £75, ex VAT, thereby incurring a total cost of £176.25 incl VAT to replace the 6 leads).

I am aware that you can get 6 leads which will fit from a factors for less than £50 incl VAT - but will these be built to the same specification/quality as the original?

I have no idea what other vehicle manufacturers charge for HT leads for a similar size/type engine - could be the same for all I know.

But 176 quid! Are they really that special?

Why are you changing the leads, have you been having the
notoriuos mis-fire.
Peter

hi
you say the notorious misfire is this a common problem then as i have recently bought an omega v6 and this has a misfire when put under stress accelerating from say 30 to 50 leaves you really flat and quite worrying if overtaking anyway it will be sorted thanks.
Question 306 Driveshafts
Ross_D

Hi Everyone,

After replacing the front shock absorbers on my 306 DTurbo (XUD9T), I have noticed that the driveshafts have some movement in them. Even with the weight of the car on them, I seem to be able to move the shaft in and out by a few mm. (Lefthand N/S shaft). Is this normal, or could I have inadvertantly damaged the shaft by replacing the shocks? There was no movement before I did the work! There seems to be some noise coming from this area, but it sounds more like a wheelbearing hum, but as soon as the weight comes off that side, eg going around lefthand corners, it quietens down.

Can anyone shed any light on this??
Thanks

I think you could be barking up the wrong tree with the wheel bearing theory. The outer drive shaft on the Cit/Pug is retained in the CV joint by a thin circlip, and it's not unknown for this to spring off if the shaft is disturbed - which could have happened if you were muscling with the hub etc while trying to remove the strut.

If you had a worn wheel bearing I would not expect a few mm of end float in it - a few thou, maybe.

I seem to remember discussing this during an e-mail session with David W. If you have a look in the Haynes book at the procedure for renewing the outer CV joint boot you will see what I mean. I've just checked it for a Cit, but I don't have a 306 manual any more.

Worth a thought?

Has anyone any experience changing a clutch on a 220 GTI ?

Is it an engine plus gearbox out together as it looks as though the gearbox /clutch will be obstructed by a subframe section if an attempt is made to remove them with the engine left in situ.

Any tips or suggestions most welcome !!. Read more

Foggy,

Sorry to hear about your Wheel episode - The 18' Radial 32 wheels do suit the 7 series really well.

IIRC, the ones for the 7 series are..

Front, Part No-85329 409952, size 8X18
Rear, Part No-85329 409953, size 9X18

Good Luck

Hi there,

I was just wondering what was the difference between a Zetec 1.6 (for example) and a "normal" 1.6 engine.

just curious, thats all..

I recall HJ directing someone to an insurance company suitable for people who may have more than one older car on the drive (a Citroen BX or two) and may want or need to be covered on alternative cars as and when mechanical attention is needed.

Does anyone recall this?

btw - I'm being hard-sold Kwik-fit insurance at the moment. Prices are attractive, but does anyone have any experience of the company in this field. They're offereing me a quote for insurance through a company called Fortis. Any advice appreciated .
