Just been out driving tonight in my escort.
i was slowing to pull up at a roundabout and put it into 4th. Then as i reached 20 i went to move it into 3rd, but i couldnt it was jammed in 4th.
Eventually after sitting fiddling with the stick i got it into 3rd and moved off. Then as i got going i got back into the other gears. Then once again when i slowed it was stuck in 4th.
Now it wont go into any other gear but 3rd or neutral. It is unbelievbably stiff now.
Any ideas? Is my gearbox dead? if so how much does that set me back?
Its a k reg Ford escort Mk 5, done about 113k on the clock.

Could be selectors (relatively cheap and easy to fix) or could be internal gearbox problem.
My hunch would be that it's selectors, sincce 3rd/4th are on the same rail.
I had a similar problem some years ago on a Mahindra Jeep, where one of the internal springs in the box broke up. Box filled with swarf and jammed in 4th. Managed to get home by using high/low box 4th only and not getting into a situation where I needed reverse! That one needed a recon box to fix, and my mechanic wasn't happy as it weighed 70kg.

Right cheers mate, better get in touch with my mechanic!

I also think that it is likely to be the selector mechanism that's at fault. I don't know about the Escort gearbox, but on some cars these symptoms indicate a selector fork coming loose on the shaft (rail).
When a selector fork comes loose it is possible for two gears to be engaged at the same time and the gearbox to completely lock up - bad for the gearbox and potentially lethal! Best not to risk driving the car at all.

Ed, I just read your posting again, properly this time!
I still think it's the selectors, but not the selector fork coming loose. More likely to be the detent (ball & spring, or similar, that keeps the selector in the right position).
