VW Polo Clutch Problems - carrie_b
Hi
Could you give me some advice... I think the clutch bearing in my 1997 Polo saloon is gone...Its making a dreadful screeching noise which ceases when the clutch is engaged.
I have been advised that its quite a large job to change a clutch bearing and i would probably be better off getting a brand new clutch.
Is this right?
Thanks

Carrie,

I take it it only squeals when the clutch pedal is pressed? If so this is almost certainly the release bearing. Changing this requires removing the gearbox, which is the large part of the cost of a new clutch anyway, so you might just as well have a new clutch fitted at the same time - the only extra cost will be the clutch itself. Make sure they change the pressure plate AND the driven (friction) plate though, and not just the friction plate!

Thanks for replying Richard...
Its actually the other way round..the squealing or dragging sound is constant once I clock up to approx 35mph ..It only stops when I press the clutch pedal in.

I'd appreciate your advice..
Thanks

Ah, doesn't sound like the release bearing then. Does the pitch of noise change if you engage a different gear? Could be a bearing in the gearbox, or it could just be that the clutch itself is slipping and making the racket - does it worsen when driving up a hill?. Difficult to tell without hearing/driving it!

This would be better posted in the technical section, as there are probably people there with direct VW experience - Mark, can you move it....?

Thanks again Richard..
I'll repost my query to the technical section.

Carrie...
I just like to be forewarned before going to a garage as I find its easier to the results you need and a fairer price..

Hi
Could you give me some advice... My 1997 Polo saloon is making a dreadful constant screeching / dragging noise thats starts once I reach 35mph and/or 2nd to 3rd gear. It only stops when the clutch is pressed down to the floor.

I have been told it may be a worn clutch bearing and advised that its quite a large job to change one and I would probably be better off getting a brand new clutch.

Is this correct?
Is there another possible cause?
Thanks

Carrie

Last night it was posted in the discussion section with a suggestion to post here instead. Looks like one of the moderators has moved the whole post and combined the two.

Ok the noise stops when you press the cluch down but do you hold the revs the same or do you take you foot off when you press the clutch.

Is you rev the car up to 2500 rpm in neutral as if you were doing 35/40 mph does the noise start. ??

I await your comments.

Hi Peter
When I press the clutch down, I take my foot off the accelerator..the noise continues .
even if I take my foot off the accelator without clutching the noise is there..it jumps and then continues.

When I rev up in neutral ...the engine sounds fine!!!

Any ideas...
Thx CB
