The engine air cooling fan is spinning after a cold start up , i haven't touched it so I'm not sure if its free wheeling but it looks to be going at the same speed as the pulley its fitted to.
I understood the fan to be a viscous coupling type which should only engage when hot? so thought it would be stationary when cold.
Is this correct? Read more

Julian,

The fan hub bearing is filled with a wax that stiffens when it gets hot (phwooarhhh!!!).

(sorry, it just slipped out).

I am considering buying a new E320 CDI Mersedes avontguard Estate. My main driving force for this choice are
1. My wife wants one
2. Must have 7 seats (5 of us + kids friends 2 dogs still a problem!)
3 Good performance diesel
4 My brother works for a Mercedes Dealer and is very encouraging

Obviously point 1 will require some effort to overcome. However point 4 is easy as he is obviously biased and doesn't provide a decent discount. The difficulty I am having is finding 7 seaters to compare it to.
Anyone help?

Ok I ordered the beast (the Merc not the Landy) Black Leather for the kids to destroy!
HJ tells me there will be a new model within the year so I will probably be back soon wingeing about depreciation.

Thanks to everyone who responded

A retired ex-colleague of mine has an early 'F' reg Rover 214 which his wife uses. The car is his ex company vehicle, has covered 57k miles and is immaculate. He has recently encountered some difficulty with his injection system and has been told by the Rover dealers in Slough, that they no longer have diagnostic equipment suitable for such an old vehicle! The problems he has, seem to me to centre around the idle valve (either no tick over at all or 1500 rpm) and he has also been told the CO level is very high.
Can anyone please advise, firstly which injection system this is (Rover-Honda?) and secondly of any good tune up agent or garage near S Bucks which would be able to help. Many Thanks. Read more

That's what I thought - mine is a March 1990 G.

Might be work giving Crown Garage a ring in Soham, Nr Ely, Cambs (bit of a trek, though) to see if they can sort you out. They have never let us down - see good garages guide.

Lots of people have been waiting for RHD imports of this. I can tell you it's finally here. See news on this website, which also has an item on the cheaper FIAT Doblo JTD 100.

No, it's five door. You can see if youy squint at it. That's the photo that came with the release. However, on the Doblo a second sliding side door is extra.

I have an Apr 2001 xsara 90hp HDi LX, at present i have a problem with drivers side front suspension/balancing? At high speed or enthusiactic (sp) driving the wheel thumps along the road (not really wobble), been to citroen garage (PC Tonkins, Cornwall) with no joy and £60 out of my pocket for 4 wheel alignment, the result was front wheels ok, but back wheels out: left rear 0.6mm (spec range 1.75 - 2.75mm) and right rear 0.1mm (same range). But they are none adjustable therefore will be like that for eva unless new parts fitted. Cant understand how this could happen? They said could be due to parking bumps on curb? Possible? Still thumps along road! There was a recall for fornt suspension pivots, wot were the symptons of this? Same problem again?

Any similar problems anybody? Any replys please Read more

Citroen said i could take it back again, cos the speeds i was talking about was over national spped limit! But they would come out with me if i drove so have to rearrange this.

I would appreciate any comments on the ST24 - don't think I can stretch to an
ST200 - they seem good value for performance, but what would it be like to live with, what should I watch out for, etc? Read more

I know that ford 1.8 petrol engines from some time (99 on I think) have mechanical shimmed tappets rather than hydraulic.

The mechanical tappets cant compensate for the increased wear on the valve seats due to the LPG and therefore Ford recommend that these cars are not converted to LPG.

The electric back window on my Freelander has its uses. For example, if someone tailgates, I can open the window and my Newfoundland dog leans out and dribbles on their bonnet. It also can be worked by fiddling with the remote control as you approach across a car park with an armful of shopping so you can tip things in without opening the tailgate if there is not much room.

However, it has twice opened itself overnight, letting in the rain and inviting thieves. The local service agent says this might be caused by passing police cars or taxis. My sister's remote control garage door did the same until its control frequency was changed.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Read more

I sometimes would find the Primera unlocked in the integral garage , then realised i was pressing the key fob with the other keys attached inadvertantly, After that i always pressed lock last thing at night.
The A4 i drive now has a function were if the doors are unlocked but no door is opened within 30 secs then they automatically relock , i would think this is possible on any modern car , enquire at the dealer / check your handbook

Am surprised not to see any comments re Fenton Breslers article in Saturdays Telegraph in which he states under Headlights and Front Foglights and I quote, these must be used when visibility is less than 100metres whatever time day or night and Always during the hours of darkness I foresee this latter misinformation on the use of Front Foglights leading to even more idiots using them illegally in clear conditions.

I am hoping there is an answer out there for this problem as it has my local merc dealer baffled.

The problem arises when the engime is warm. The car will not accelerate and the revs will not pass 2000rpm. If I turn the engine off for a few moments the problem goes away.

As usual when the garage mechanics ddrive the car nothing happens and it drives fine

Any answers?
