firstly thanks to everyone for all help thus far. hope you dont mind my asking another question as i am worried it may be something serious. if i have the lights on and the car stationary with the engine idling, the brightness of the lit milometer varies with engine speed. i.e. if i rev the engine it gets brighter. is this normal or does it indicate nasty (expensive?) electrical problem? grateful for any help. robertbaker1962@hotmail.com . thanks Read more

I infer that you refer to me counting 4, not 5.

The Back Room,

An old dear reversed into my car some time ago - she was reversing in road works to let white van man come through.

I had legal protection, so I put it their hands. The front of my plastic clad Rover was damaged - a cracked bumper, bent wing and broken light

I was without a car for two weeks; I had out of pocket expenses too.

The legal protection co. recovered not a penny for me - I had paid them £24.00 for this service when I renewed my insurance.

I will not be paying for this service again.

I have a Volvo 940 estate now; galvanised rubber coated damped RSJs as front and rear bumpers - plus tow bar.

Unless its another 940 that reverses into me next time, then my car will be unmarked in a similar 2 mph collision.

Has anyone else had similar poor experience with such 'legal cover' - is it a con to get yet more money out of us?

General experience seems to indicate waste of time. Let's face it, for small
claims under £5,000 and no injuries, you can do it yourself. Small Claims Court
procedures are simple, threaten guilty party with summons in 14 days and then
do it! You will be surprised how quickly you will get response/result.

ULR, as it is know in the trade, deserves the bad name it has and is trying to clean itself up but, like all insurance, you have to retain a measure of control
because you never really know whose side your insurer is on - yours or the shareholders'.

As an alternative to claiming on your insurance or paying hard earnt cash what about insurance schemes to pay for car park menaces and shopping trolley fiends.
As an alternative to the likes of Dent master , Dentdevils and Scratchmaster I am considering AUTORENEW underwritten by IGI Insurance where for a premium of £79 per year & a £25 excess for each claim they will miraculously repair using a Paintless Dent Removal technique or blowing in scratches with matched colour on your pemises.
Has anyone used them or can report on their quality of workmanship.
They are supposed to vet every agent before apppointing them to certain ares.
They claim to be much cheaper but just as good as anyone else.

I almost thought that you had spelt it with an N! Whose else do that match with?

What are your views of keeping a car in a garage in terms of is it beneficial for long term protection of the bodywork.
I have always made a point of never putting it inside if the car is wet as it will never dry off as well as being outside.
However from observation of other peoples cars I'm not sure if there's any value in garaging a car at all.

I think that you have hit the nail on the head, most house garages are too small and too badly ventilated to do much in the way of helping preserve a car.
Added to that, storage space in modern houses is minimal, so the garage fills with other items before the car gets a chance.

Having just got a second Mondeo in the family, I find driving it especially at night awful because of the heated screen. I could replace the screen with an old non heated one, but am I the only person to find this a problem? It makes the odd scratch on windscreens appear to be a minor problem as these elements are over the entire surface. Read more

As a passenger, she was focusing her eyes on it,as a driver your eyes should be focused much further up the road and you should not see the elements.

I have seen a Saab 9-5 advertised at £6250, S reg (Sept 98) 2.3T alloys, climate control 104,00 miles. It has a computer print out with a full service history from Saab leasing. I have seen it and driven it. For a 3 and a half year old car it seems a good deal. Should I be worried about the mileage, blown turbos and knackered cats or hope it goes to 200,00 with no problems? Would you get an AA check? Your informed thoughts please Read more

ROBIN

I dont think they are derived from vectras, are they?
the 9/3 was derived from the cavalier, and Saab nearly achieved the impossible by making it half acceptable.
The mileage is low,for a SAAB!
Does HJ know if they run estates?
because if they do then I want one, urgently!

Quiet in here today, is everybody still shell-shocked after the speeding camera debate ?

On another subject, you might find this is an interesting website. ITs not free, but the one free example they give you was all that I needed.

www.eurocote.net/eurocote/index.asp

Essentially it compares the prices and options available on vehicles between European countries of your choice.

Frightening differences, it might be the first time I've been convinced about the advisability of importing your own car.

Mazza

I have saved 12% on my new car by importing, over here all the dealer would give me was a free 6 CD autochanger. Not much compared to a saving of almost £3K.

Well, I'm glad to see that speed no longer kills, and cars are no longer dangerous.

Or at least not according to the "off beat" section for kids.

Warns kids to watch out for traffic, even that cycles might be travelling faster than traffic.

But no mention of cars killing you, or, if you're lucky (?) leaving you a mangled, barely alive mush.

Not even anything about how they speed, and how, even if they seem to be a long way away, they can all too soon be on top of you.

But then again, is this really his force's site, or one of those ever so clever spoofs that you can hardly tell from the real thing?;-)

Dear All,

I own a 1.6 16V N reg Ford Escort Ghia with the Zetec engine.
>
The only problem that I've experienced with it is that on occassions when
its damp the car will start, but clearly only on three cylinders. It ofetn
runs for a bit never seems to "clear itself" and then dies.

Further attempts to start the car only result in you spinning the engine.
If it's then left for a few minutes it starts OK.

Do you know what could be the cause of the problem?

A second question, "What's the recommended spark plug gap for this car 1mm
or 1.3mm?" Read more

Other problem that seems to be manifesting itself is the coil pack developing cracks underneath. Worth checking!

Ian,

Careful, if Liberace were alive today he would be sueing your ass off for a comment like that!

Serious comment actually, he spent a lifetime in litigation against those who accused him of being a woolly wooftah.
