I was just wondering if anyone has experienced these engines and would care to pass comment.

I've read the various magazine write-ups and it seems they have impressed the average journalist.

My wonder, asides from how they drive, is how reliable the units are. As I understand it, the common rail injection system is more advanced than that used in the various HDi engines, but on an HDi engine what is it's weak point? My money is on the injector pump being the weakest link on the TDCi engines, given the pressure it works at.

Cheers

I have driven both Focus and Mondeo TDCi. Both are quite lively with characteristics like an LPT petrol. The Focus one seemed a lot more refined.

My Father has just been stung by our local independent garage, who until now has been well trusted.
Upon requesting (verbally) for an MOT prep with brakes for his ageing 2.0 GSi primera, (N.Ireland MOT's are conducted by official government run centres not local garages as on the mainland) and specifically declining any washing, oil, filters etc (due to DIY servicing) He gets an additional £86 parts + VAT & £30 + VAT labour bill for a full service, they even replaced a 6 month old fuel filter!
He paid by cheque, as they would not release the car until paid.
The owner accepted there had been a mistake but would not reduce the bill. Other than reporting to trading standards, what (if anything) can he do? Read more

Vern,

If I'd made a *genuine* mistake and done something similar I'd offer to waive the labour and reduce the parts prices to the trade levels I had paid.

From the way you relate this it doesn't sound like a mistake, particularly as the guy is demonstrating a poor attitude to the customer in refusing to concede at all.

Sometimes in life it is best to walk away from these things as a superior human and just resolve to tell all you mates the story.

Life's too short and all that.

I'm interested in buying a Toyota Yaris D-4D. I was told by Toyota customer sevices a while ago
that they would be available from March 4th. I phoned all my nearby Toyota dealers to ask whether
they had any brochures or cars for a test drive. Sorry mate, don't know nothing about it.
Phoned Toyota customer services again, Ah! It will be announced on March 4th but won't be
available till April. Phoned again, yes it will be available for sale on the 1st of March in time
to catch the new reg's. Well why doesn't my dealer know anything about this then? Hang on I'll
check. Yes, definately 1st of March, marketing have confirmed it. Well, I'm getting a bit hacked off
over all this, so I thought I'd e-mail instead. Do you know, in the whole of the global Toyota web
sites, there is no e-mail address for customer enquiries? So, please if anyone has an e-mail address
that would put me in touch with anyone at Toyota could they please let me have it?
Many thanks. Read more

Toyota announced prices for the Yaris D-4D yesterday. From £8,395 for the 3-door S with PAS, and from £11,395 for the Verso GS D-4D. Will post more in the news when I get time.

Hello, I am writing an article about historic sportscar racing for an American magazine titled, The Magnolia. I would greatly appreciate anyone who would take the time to provide me a few quotes about the subject:

Possible questions:
1. What draws you to the sport of historic sportscar racing?

2. How long have you been a fan or participant?

3. Have you noticed any changes in the sport since you first became involved?

4. How are the fans of historic racing different from traditional racing fans?

5. Do you own a historic sportscar? If so what kind?

Please feel free to answer any of these questions or say anything else about the sport you feel like. If I can use a quote please give me YOUR NAME and the name of the CITY and COUNTRY where you live.

My deadline is Thursday afternoon this week 2/28/02, so nearly immediate response will be necessary.

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to reading your comments about this very interesting sport.

Anybody know of a source to buy mobile phone car kit parts seperatly, Having changed my phone, I wish to change the car kit but do not want to pay the £189 for the full kit installed. Every scrapper I have talked to has never had a car with one fitted, I would have thought that the majority of cars with them fitted would be company cars, and so when written off they would be disposed of with the kit installed. All mobile phone outlets are not interested in selling seperatly. Ebay also tends to have the complete kits.... any ideas?

I am after the Control unit HFU-2 and cradle MCC-1 of the Nokia car kit CARK-91 and am replacing an older Nokia kit so all the old wiring, mic etc is common Read more

I am sure that the Pink Prat has some point somewhere, but in fact the majority of the electrical goods they sell are end-of-line surplus stock.

That stock which is left just before the new model comes out. An awful lot of it does not come from the retailer but further back in the chain.

Hence the significant saving comes from end of line, excess stock, and bought from wholesaler or distributor rather than retailer.

I doubt if you could have anybody in a sidecar - not in a Steib, anyway!

Can HJ confirm that from next year BMW's will have indicators fitted? or will they continue to cut others up, whilst swerving from lane to lane, with out any notice as they currently do? Read more

BMW - who gives a flying .....? The local dealer is crap so they don't get my money, haven't a clue if the 3 series is any good - simply don't care.

I haven't a clue about who CW "really" is or what makes him post here in such a weird way but credit when it's due........

Today the three Land Rover brochures arrived he said would be on their way, properly packaged and no demands for payment.

So thank you Chris. As I said I don't collect brochures as such but have a few put away for interest and these are good additions to the folder.

I will reimburse you and I assume the Lada Owners Club address is the correct one for reaching you.

(Therapy course complete, follow up attended and file now closed! Thank you Darcy.)

I know these are the queries I normally answer myself, but here`s one I don`t know the answer to.

If a non-UK citizen is in the UK they are able to drive on their "foreign" driving licence for a length of time. This length of time depends on the circumstances, but that isn`t my point.

I am a UK citizen.

Can I use my Brazilian, Chilean, Mexican or US driving licences in the same way ?

Bearing in mind that I do have a valid UK licence, albeit that I have no idea where it is and lost it years ago, I do realise I could get another.

If I have to produce, can I produce a non-UK licence in circumstances where a non-UK Citizen can ?

I am not resident in the UK. I doubt its relevant, but I am resident in the Virgin Isles.

It isn`t for dodging tickets, its the question of Rental Cars and Notice to Produce. Rental companies have always accepted on of my foreign licences, but what do they know beyond the rental co. rules.

I suspect that this is a hole because of the [comparative] rarity of the situation.

Pity pugugly hasn`t been around lately, because I suspect that he would know.

DVD ? or perhaps Andrew ? Read more

THE Growler

I am in exactly this situation, UK passport holder, non-resident in UK, legal permanent resident of the Philippines, have property in UK, UK license holder (dummy address - a maildrop) and numerous "foreign" licenses. When I visit UK (as rarely as possible since when the end of the world comes in my opinion it will probably look like the M25) always use my foreign license plus foreign credit card to rent a car. On the two occasions when I have committed some offence or other the fine has simply been billed to my card by Hertz or who ever. If the UK system wants to do me do me for anything else, let them come the hell looking for me. The other option I have used is to rent the car using the growlette's foreign passport and license and me as extra driver.

Were I to return to live in UK, apart from seeking psychiatric help, I would maintain a I am a tourist simply by maintenance of my foreign residence permit and taking regular trips out. I would rent my property to myself using the offshore company it is owned by as my landlord.

By the way, the Iranian International license is large and very impressive. One plod who stopped me once examined it with great care, scratched his head and told me it wouldn't be any point booking me (pre-Gatso speeding, 'cos they couldn't read the Farsi address to mail the notice to!)

Like every good Filipino citizen I believe motoring and taxation laws and regulations exist primarily for the purpose of challenging the ingenuity to invent new ways around them!

Yes, Alex - this is sadistic!. I'm out Thursday evening, so I'll have to decide which programme to video (or persuade Jack the lad to record one of them for me at his house).

Decisions, decisions....
