Articulated Trucks on motorways often cruise at 90kph / 56 mph. Why, and How?
Can anyone with personal experience of driving Artics say whether Artics are these days normally equipped with cruise control? Read more
We've all heard the mutterings about satellite-controlled congestion charging and satellite-monitoring of speed.
now we hear that the EU (who else?) is to go ahead and blow £2billion on a new 'GPS' style satellite network. It virtually duplicates everything the American system does, so what is it really for? Read more
yea well lots of american friends have had free expensive medical care wihile in this country (why they dont get billed i dont know) out of out taxes
and we get stiched up big time if we get ill over there
in case you havent noticed it our marines doing the dirty work since your guys could pull off operation annoconda
who pays for what is much more complex than a few quid for gps

etc etc
strnage old world, dont think gps is so generous really
i) you wanted it anyway for military reaons
ii) costs of making it widely available are marginal on top of i)
This isn't really a new topic but is intended to thank all the contributors, starting with Claire Voyant, to the thread below. I've had a real dog of a day until coming in and reviewing today's chat and am now reduced to happy tears of laughter!
Nutters! Great spider 'threads' on great 'web' site.

Or crawl the web for a bit... (and stop distracting me from work!)
I was at the Sports & Supercar Show in Exeter a couple of weeks ago and there was a really nice looking trad roadster called the YKC Julietta. It was a superb looking car and cost around £15,000 fully built. Made the Morgans look overpriced and antiquated.I forgot to get their details can anyone help with contact phone number etc? Read more
Hi Mark; The company are called YKC and their phone number is 01904 608 899 or website www.ykcsportscars.co.uk. They are one of the UK's longest established specialist manufacturers and also make the Roadster, Romero, Mille Miglia, Raider, Pace & Imola. You are right about the £15,000 turnkey bit and that is with a 130bhp Zetec. Great value. Steve
Hi,
I just had a coolant leak fixed and an oil gasket replaced. The next day I saw some (not a lot) emulsion on the dipstick and can see more in the oil filler tube (on an MGF). Could this be caused by the engine being opened up to replace the gasket, letting moisture in, along with several days of stop/starting the engine with no distance covered? I'm worried about an HGF...

I know the thread is "old" but here is my two penn'orth! My Sierra suddenly suffered from mayo; spoke to my tame fitter who said "head gasket". I said "ouch" and he agreed to check, and the oil was absolutely clean - so he went looking, and found that the engine breathers (don't ask - my expertise is in electronics) were very badly blocked. Hardly surprising on an engine that had done about 180,000 without any major work but he could not tell me why checking the breathers isn't in the servicing manual!
Now at 208,000 and going well (touch wood)!
In the not too distant future I would like to take the car to Europe for a short break (I need the break, not the car). Although I passed my driving test abroad, in Cyprus, I have never driven on the right hand side (Ok... except for overtaking!).
Question, is there anywhere in the North West that provides instruction/experience of driving on the right?

Claire,
I've probably missed the boat on this thread but here's a site with useful driving information and links:

It appears that when fitting just 2 new tyres these should be put on the rear, regardless of whether the car is front or rear wheel drive.
My car has front wheel drive, and I would have thought that new tyres on the front would give better steering, better braking and aquaplane resistance in the wet, and a lower risk of a puncture (which from experience I prefer in the rear).
Can anyone confirm and/or explain this recommendation please? Read more
I knew someone who raced Minis on an oval track; according to him, the best way that the old Mini's rear wheels contributed to cornering was when they were sliding, so he used to pick out worn tyres for the rears.
In case that should worry anyone, you'd have to be really going some for rear tyres with minimum legal tread to do this.
See previous threads for full info.
BTW j,
Seems to me your comment would only make sense if we were talking about rear wheel drive, and Mike's post is for FWD.
I have a pin hole in my bike exhaust.
There's no way to clamp or wrap tape or a wrap a metal sleeve around it.
However there is a suprising amount of good metal round the pinhole.
I feel that if I painted something strong and sticky over it with a brush the whole lot would hold up for years.
Is such a product on the market? Is there some kind of heat proof glue I could use to seal it?
A new system is 480 quid. I've budgeted for it but I'd like to get a few more months out of this one.
For instance anyone tried applying chemical metal in this way? Read more
It's not a water drain hole is it?
As found on the bottom edge of some bike exhausts...
Weld it or replace it.
It appears a spider has set up home in my car, possibly during a week of airport parking. I saw it scuttle across the passenger seat yesterday morning (it's a biggie). I left the doors open in the vain hope that he would leave, but the appearance of a fair amount of cobweb this morning tell me he hasn't.
I've had a good look for him but can't see him anywhere. I'm not usually that bothered by spiders but I would like him out of my car. It's quite distracting wondering when and where he's going to appear again.
Is there a humane way of evicting him or is the car vac the only way? Read more
Just though I'd add that all spiders bite. Gotta hurt

I'm about to buy a 5 year old bike for £2400 privately from it's only owner to date.
I can't decide whether it's worth paying £35 for a HPI check.
What are the chances of any finance company not having taken the bike back already if there's a large amount owing?
If there could only be a tiny amount owing it doesn't seem worth the £35 to insure against it.
I've viewed the bike at the registered address and beleive the owner to be geniune. If there was finance outstanding what recourse would I have against the vendor?
Any thoughts? Read more

I *wasn't* being serious!
Did you see the 45 smileys afterwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes some trucks do have cruise control.
