The remote control door lock on my Citroen Xantia only operates on rare occasions. Batteries in the key fob are new,and the light flashes when used, but the door lock rarely operates. I have been told that perhaps it needs to be re-programmed. Is this something I can do myself, or is there, perhaps, another reason why it will not operate. Read more

In about 1996 or 97 I purchased from my local Citroen dealer an empty replacement plip casing for my 93 Xantia. The cost then was about £7. Maybe they are still available if you ask the right question at the spares counter.
It was a matter of removing the internals from the old case and fitting them into the new case.

Further to the post below, I saw the comet for the first time last night at 21.45. It was not near The Pleiades as suggested but rather nearer to Cassiopeia.

To locate, look north-west at an elevation of perhaps 25 to 30 degrees. If not seen immediately with a naked eye, put a line through the uppermost stars in the W of Cassiopeia. Take another line at right angles to this down to the horizon. You will see a star in Andromeda ( Andromed Beta?-or it could be planet Mars) seemingly alone, low in the sky.

The comet is slightly above and to the right of this. Chart here..

As the outer part of the eye is more sensitive at night, it will be easier to see the smudge if you don't look directly at it. This is demonstated by looking for the Pleiades. See it out of the corner of the eye but when we look right at it , it almost disappears.

Binoculars needed to see clearly, of course. Read more

Michael Meacher, guardian of the environment and enemy of the motorcycle, was caught out by the Sunday Times.

Journalists phoned his home to query his holiday trip to Spain, in view of the fact that his department is urging tourists to stay in the UK to support the countryside's economy in the wake of foot & mouth.

Throughout the telephone conversation, he passed himself off as his constituency agent and denied knowledge of his trip to Spain. The jounalist tried to call him back, but Meacher had not hung up his phone. He was heard in a heated debate with his wife, who said he should have come clean about his Spanish jaunt.

crazed, how right you are.

In addition to observing Panda driver errors too numerous to mention, I followed an old diesel Mondeo recently, complete with police instructor and 3 student drivers.

Making a rapid ascent of the Snake Pass, I caught them up. Noticing the small "police driver under instruction" sticker on the bootlid, I decided to refrain from overtaking. They drove painfully slowly to the summit and down the other side into Glossop. From there, the limit is 30 for several miles up to the M67. They ignored the limit and held 40-45mph throughout.

They seemed to be enjoying a joke session & the instuctor was more interested in shop windows than teaching.

I do try to observe 30 & 40 and know I shouldn't have followed them, but curiosity got the better of me. They weren't even in a hurry, I passed them on the M67 & left them on the horizon.

It may well have been there before, but I've just picked up on a whistling sound on acceleration from my Saab 9000CSE. Is the turbo about to give me grief? Read more

Been away for a couple of days. Thanks for all the advice.

Whilst reversing my avensis, turning steering wheel a lot whilst reversing very little (unpleasant driveway parking manoeuvre), the steering wheel (I think) makes a horrible squeaking / groaning sound.

Car is under warranty so it will be fixed when serviced, but anyone else experienced this?

This has got to be the most unreliable car I ever had. Six problems in a year, all different! Anyone beat that?

Yes, I know this is the 1st of April but I am too old and too fed up for such rubbish !

Can anyone please advise, when it was that the "powers at be" began using the road tax for things other than the roads. Is there some point in time that this practice started or have they been at it since day one ? Thanks. Read more

Sorry to change the subject slightly, but is there any difference between spending National Insurance tax only on National Insurance (a good thing it seems) and spending congestion camera revenues on more congestion engineering (a bad thing)?

> Can you see a pattern emerging?

Yes.

Can't you?

I've test driven one of these cars and am very impressed. I do find it hard to get smoothly away from rest without the car leaping off like a startled rabbit as the engine reaches turbo boost somewhere between 1500 and 2000 revs; seems to require a very light touch on the throttle in gears 1 and 2 to avoid this. (In every other respect I find it a very easy car to drive smoothly.) A characteristic of the pd turbo engine? Something one gets used to? my own ham-footedness??

I'd be glad to hear from those who own or have driven the golf pd 130.

Many thanks.

Hi - one for all you trade types. Its been suggested to me that I might try Forte power steering treatment to overcome the occasional click that I previously reported on my Omega's power steering.

Do any of you have experience of this stuff? Read more

I suspect from previous experience that pas treatment is indeed a bit special, but I wish that one of the backroom "boffins" could come up with a homemde formula for petrol fuel system cleaner, which is very likely comprised of cheap and readily obtainable ingredients.

I would appreciate a dose of HJ's realism and advice on what price to ask for my Avensis 1.8GS. I have trawled through the various web sites - Glass's Guide, Parkers, Auto Express, Loot, Auto Trader checking out what they think this car would fetch at a private sale, and the spread is nearly a £1000.

I put it in AutoTrader at £6,590 and didn't get any bites (but then I checked the magazine and they had the wrong phone number - Durr!) I have seen this model as low as £5,300 and Glass's was talking of £4,300!! with dealers asking £6,995.

So what should I go for??

Car is an Avensis 1.8GS 5dr manual, silver 1999 T plate June reg, has 2 months manufacturer warranty left, Tax to Oct '02, FDSH, 27,000 mostly motorway miles, a/c e/w c/l in what I would call good nick ie no dents or scrapes, 2 new tyres, tidy interior and all the bits work.

Cheers
