  • Shell Optimax Petrol 8 May 2003 (Forum)
Recently switched from Supermarket petrol to Shell optimax (filled full tank when on empty) and I get the impression that my fuel consumption has improved. I havent checked the figures but given my average driving style, routes and use of air con I feel that I am getting more miles from a tank in the last journey.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6636579.stm "Supermarkets have paid out more than £9m in compensation to motorists following an incident which saw petrol contaminated with silicon. Tesco has paid about £8m after more than 17,000 people filed claims when the fuel damaged their vehicles.
  • LPG & Tax 16 Jan 2005 (Forum)
the government were going to tax it more as it changed its mind on its environmental credentials(Hmm..). Has it happened yet? or is it held up with the other petrol/diesel increases announced in the budget but delayed. The reason why I ask is a nearby Morrisons supermarket were selling LPG at 29.9p/litre!, nearly a third of the price of diesel at 83.9p/litre.

  • Honda Civic - B10 Diesel 2 Sep 2022 (Forum)
I have read a lot about B10 Petrol recently and the possible issues surrounding this. My Honda Civic is the 1.6 Diesel version and I have been filling it with fuel from supermarkets, all of which have shown the fuel as B7 Grade. Today, however, I was passing a BP garage where the cost was the lowest in the area so went in to fill up.
  • Skoda Fabia vRS - driving in France - many q's 17 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Do the motorway tolls still operate through the night?  If they do, can you pay cash, as we don't have a credit card. - Are there still petrol stations that accept cash?  Like I said, we don't have a credit card, so will be using cash. - On what days are supermarkets, particularly petrol stations closed. I think that's it for now, but I'll probably end up asking more.

  • Black Smoke / Liquid from exhaust 30 Jul 2002 (Forum)
The car tends to be driven hard (um, thrashed actually) and I noticed a burning smell the other day at about 6000rpm. Has been served regularly though at franchised dealer. No dodgy supermarket petrol used either. Does anyone have ideas what this is, how it can be cured, and if there is a cheap way to do it? Thanks, in anticipation.

  • golf mk4 throttle body problems 28 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The garage cleaned the 'throttle body' saying it was a common condition at that mileage, but denying it should have been cleaned at the recent service. My question is whether using supermarket petrol creates more deposits in the throttle body and would using an injection cleaner every 5000 miles help to stop this biuldup?
  • Peugeot 306 2.0D 28 Oct 2003 (Forum)
It needs to be cheap to run, comfy on motorways, have ABS, Air Con and 5 doors. I've seen quite a few 306 2.0 Meridian's with about 35k - 45k on them at a Car Supermarket. Can anyone let me know if these diesel's are a bad/good buy? Or, the 1.8 petrols? Any experience / advice appreictaed. Thanks.

  • Fuel comparison tests 15 Dec 2005 (Forum)
In the latest Jan. 2006 Evo magazine, there is an article on comparison tests on 8 different brands of petrol, including supermarket fuels. They used a Golf GTI and a BMW M5 and did rolling road tests to get power/torque figures, and on-road "driving feel" tests. Makes quite interesting reading. I know they did a similar thing on Fifth Gear recently, but I missed it.
  • In an estate over high fuel costs 30 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I have an Audi 80 2.6E V6 estate, 93 L with 80k on the clock. Should I keep it and continue paying high prices for petrol and possibly have to buy a pair of new catalytic converters. Convert it to LPG. Sell it and buy a slower diesel 80. Buy an A4 TDi 110 bhp with 100k on the clock for about £10k. or get a nearly new Vectra diesel from a car supermarket?
  • Ford Mondeo - Mondeo/Vectra 2005 - petrol or diesel? 24 Jan 2014 (Forum)
The old faithful s-reg Mondeo petrol estate is still running like a swiss watch, but the rust and tyre situation probably means that funds to nurse it through the Mot would be better spent elsewhere. we are usually short runs (10 miles return) with occasional big trips, but like the comfort of  a car Mondeo/Vectra sized - hatchback slightly preferable for the supermarket car park. :-) .
  • Is E85 ethanol making a comeback? 10 Oct 2022 (Forum)
Never took off due to limited opportunities to refuel.   I was surprised therefore at my local French supermarket, that the E5 98 octane choice on the pump had been removed for E85.  E10 95 octane petrol is currently on sale for €1.56 a litre or £1.37 a litre at the current exchange rate.
