  • Ford Focus, is it ABS, what revision ? 3 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I've just bought a Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec 2001 (51) reg. Besides getting up to speed and slamming the brakes on is there a simple way to determine if it has ABS or not. Also on the pricing guide there are two verions for this reg a 1.6 zetec and a 1.6 (revised 2001) zetec. What is 'revised' and how do I determine if mine is revised version or not.
  • Daddy's little helper 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
She obvioulsy got bored with doing that and managed to reach up and get hold of my oil can and proceeded to empty the contents in the front and rear brakes soaking all the pads and discs in engine oil. How good is she ? I sent my wife out to test drive it afterwards - she came back ok. Have your little ones done anything as clever or is it just me.

Firstly there is a squeaking noise coming from the front of the car not sure if it near or off side. If i tap the brakes it seems to stop the noise for a short period but then it comes back. Also sometimes when i am driving on the motorway and do around 80 the steering wheel seems to vibrate. But it doesnt do it all the time.
  • passat front suspension/drive noise 7 Aug 2006 (Forum)
hello, help please, got a worsening noise from the front of my 2000 W plate 2.8 4 Motion. First noticed it under braking but checked it over as best I can and can see nothing obviously amiss there or with any of the rubber bushes. Noise is now there under drive and I think worse when cornering left. Does this look like a cv joint, are there any common passat suspension/drive issues to look out for?
  • ford fiesta service after being sorn 29 Dec 2005 (Forum)
She has a fiesta on the drive that has been there since march the battery is flat so we purchased a new one. It needs servicing but we don't know which one to have. The brakes need servicing too and the tyres may need replacing due to perishing. What service level should i require. All help appreciated -- (iam not a mechanic) Martin Winters
  • 2003 Astra 1.6 Sport. ABS or not? 21 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I don't want to try and get him to lock the wheels, but does anybody know if this car is fitted with ABS? I looked under the bonnet and couldn't see an ABS block, just two brake pipes going towards the back of the car, and 1 towards each wheel. Any ideas?
  • Don't be polite, it's dangerous 19 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Behind me, nothing. Up ahead is a junction with a car waiting to turn in our out. The car ahead of me brakes to a halt to allow the car in or out of the minor road. Yours truly is making small sacrifices to the God of ABS, though only small ones as I've left a decent gap. WHY!? Why not just drive on and let the road clear?
  • Nissan Primera for 160 quid 18 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I just needed a runabout, and got a 1994 Primera 1.6L with 200,000 miles for 160 notes. It's got history up to 185,000 miles. The engine pulls strongly, the brakes are strong, and it tracks in a straight line. Anyway, anyone got any tips about what I should be watching out for on this car? I only got it last week and plan to drive it over to Calais on Saturday.
  • Chips & Chipping 10 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Surely it would invalidate any warranties or insurance. Also, I presume the set up needs careful adjustment and maybe shocks, brakes and even wheels and tyres might need uprating. It sounds a pretty dangerous way to get more performance when compared with buying one that's already up to the job. Is it legal?
  • Paint stripper / remover (small area!) 28 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Hello All, I guess this might be "technical", I will leave it to the mods to move if requ. The centre section of the rear brake disc on my motorcycle was originally painted gold, much of the gold paint has come away over time leaving clean stainless underneath however there are a few patches of stubbon gold paint that I would like to remove without taking the disc of the wheel.
  • Equivalent car parts across makes. 16 May 2005 (Forum)
Is their an source of information about which car parts are common across makes and models? I'm particularly interested in brake parts, as I'm wanting to eBay some parts I don't need, and it'll be handy to know what range of cars they will fit apart from the one I bought them for. A good example is when I needed new front caliper for my Megane which I found out was the same as on a 205 GTi, which I had a spare one of.
  • Clutch pedal - rover 414 96N 16 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Calling all Rover 414 owners....the ones that want to admit it anyway!!! My clutch pedal seems to sit much higher than the brake and accelerator pedal - at least an inch. Is that normal for this car? I haven't really noticed until now and the reason I ask is that for about 5 minutes the clutch pedal was really slack at the top of its travel when operating it, had no tension in it at all, then it gradually came back, and to me the pedal now seems to sit higher up.
  • creaking suspension - mk4 Golf 29 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi all, I recently developed a new fault with my golf tdi,mk4. Whenever i brake sharply / go over speed bumps etc the car makes a creaking sound. If i press down on the front of the car whilst stationary it makes the noise. It doesnt seem to be coming from near the suspension but below the engine, any ideas?
  • Tyre price comparisons 9 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Oh - natioal chain similar to Kwik Fit, labour rate 30.02 euros per hour - about £20.75 and they checked the brake pads & discs!
  • c180 sport 29 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Whilst driving in traffic recently, the BAS light came on for a second, and then went off again. It has done this several times. I have checked the brake fluid etc, and everything is normal. The ABS light doesnt come on with the BAS light, which leads me to believe that the ABS sensors must be ok. Also, the car is a manual, and is constantly jumping out of 2nd gear.
  • sierra 11 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Everyone says we're gonna be ripped off but we've found a sierra on a K plate(1992) with only 61,000 miles, new clutch, new gearbox, new brakes, 10cd multichanger, infinity speakers in a custom shelf. The only rust is a tiny bit starting on the rear wheel arch. The car looks in really good nick, starts from cold and drives well (at the moment!!)
  • Vectra clutch slave cylinder 17 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Been losing fluid from the combined brake / clutch fluid reservoir on my '96 vectra and have tracked it down to the clutch slave cylinder, according to Haynes workshop manual this looks a massive job involving removing the front subframe and gearbox.
  • Black Box 20 Oct 2002 (Forum)
The BBC news tonight carried a story about parents of a 17 year old in the USA who had fitted a Black Box to his car. It enabled them to monitor his speed, acceleration and braking. It occurred to me that if we made it compulsory to fit them in the UK, together with a GPS tracker, we could do away with S**** C******. Detect them. Fine them. No arguments. We could call it the:- Blackbox Operated Gps Universal Speed Hazard detection device Can't think of a suitable acronym for such a detection device though.
  • disabling ABS 16 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Hi I'm getting an almost permanent judder from the brakes on my bora sport. How can i temporarily disconnect the ABS to see if that's the problem ? (the handbook suggests there are 4 fuses on the battery of which one is ABS motor realy and one is ABS main realy, but doesn't help you identify which is which (and there are only 4 fuses on my battery) and there's also another fuse labelled ABS on the main (internal) fuse box anybody know ?
  • Cheap ZX - urgent! 9 Apr 2002 (Forum)
J reg Citroen ZX 1.4i Advantage 59000 miles No history £750 Drove well enough and bodywork, clutch and gearbox are excellent. But would need a service, the tracking is quite bad, and there's a squeaking noise from the brake pedal. Would also need aerial fitting. I've since found out that on J reg ZX's the front callipers can be sticky. Is this serious (from a safety point) or expensive to fix? Should I offer £550 or look further and spend £1000 on a better one?
