  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 04 1.6 Juddering gearbox after transmission fluid 31 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I say "saga" as this latest problem coincides with a plethora of warning lights and recorded warning messages coming on in cold weather this winter (now off on their own accord!), juddering when braking after brake fluid topped up at service and one VW garage managing to crack the windscreen when it was in for service! AAAAAAARGH! Why don't VW 1. at least read these pages and 2. reply "We will take responsibility and sort things out for you"??????
  • Toyota - Suspicious Californian Lexus Crash 8 Oct 2009 (Forum)
(The recording available on the web is apparently 50 seconds long) This implies that the engine could not be shut off, the gearbox could not be put in neutral, the brakes were not effective, and the emergency brake did not work. Though I am not familiar with the Lexus, it is very hard to see how all these functions could be disabled by a carpet. I?ve seen speculation on the internet that this was a general failure of an integrated drive-by-wire electronic control system, and (though I don?
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - Servicing - Should the wheels come off? 19 May 2008 (Forum)
Nuts back on loose and driven backwards and forwards did the trick. Now my beef is - should not the wheels be taken off during one of its 3 main dealer services for brake component inspection?? They clearly haven't been off since the car was manufactured! It seems as though if the brakes are working then thats a service item pass. And whilst I'm on a roll. Wheel nut torque settings.
  • Citroen AX (1987 -1997) - Dim rear lights, dim mechanic? 14 Oct 2007 (Forum)
A day or two ago I followed my son's AX through town and noticed the offside brake light was dim. When I saw him again at home, I suggested we investigate, and then subjected him to a Hawkeye masterclass on fault-finding which I certainly won't bore you good people with. When the rack that holds all the lamps in the cluster was exposed we noticed that other bulbs were glowing when the brake light was on.
  • Renault Megane W reg ABS problem. 2 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The big question is: Has anybody had experience of bleeding the braking/ABS system of the Megane? Any thoughts please?

  • ALL new 2006 E class Merc 15 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Mercedes claims to have ironed these out by testing every component separately outside the car to ensure durability under all conditions. The braking system has also been changed. The 2002 E-Class had a part-electronic mechanism that was the subject of a recall campaign, but this has been dropped. Mercedes says it can now get the same braking effectiveness by conventional means.
  • Great moment 22 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Mr Testosterone then moves up alongsdie of me .In a moment of madness I use 2 fingers to give him a summary of my view of his driving ability and general concern for others. To my amazement he brakes sharply .Do we have a road rage incident ? Then he looks at me again , fllors the pedal and races off at what must have been weel over the ton, to do the same again to someone ahead of us . For a few miles I consider why he braked .Then I think I guess it.
  • Advice prior to the Service Department 24 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Terrain covered - main roads, but also two daily 11 mile round trips in narrow, hilly and winding lanes - often involving pulling on to the grass verges and braking in the face of oncoming traffic around blind bends (not travelling fast obviously) I've noticed an occasional knock on the nearside front coming from underneath - a sort of cross between a knock and a rattle.
  • Squeaky noise 30 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Have been trying to establish exactly when and why this happens, at first it seemed to be at low speed and when I changed gear or applied brakes. Now it seem to be happening a lot more, but I can\'t really describe an actual breakdown of when and why it happens. Seems to happen when I\'m accelerating, or decelerating, in low gears, and am changing gears whether or not braking or trying to speed up.
  • VAG main dealer Golf TDi service 20 Apr 2002 (Forum)
This is an update to the thread I posted last week re the main dealer service and the problems with over full engine oil, brake fluid and damage to the sill. the car went back this afternoon for them to inspect. They replaced the brake fluid again - and refunded the total price on the bill (£42) for doing that work. I thought that this was a good deal and showed they understood.
  • Volkswagen Golf 29 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I would have accepted their advice if the brake pads had worn down completely, but they were only 80% worn. Total cost with labour was over £600 Since I needed the car, I told them to go ahead but to keep me the pads and discs as I would take the matter up with Volkswagen H.O.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 ABS pump 19 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I relented and agreed to have it done yesterday with the brake pads. However I received a call from VW to say that the brake pads all round together with the discs were very very low and scored etc etc and all needed doing. £958.65 was the bill for this. That was yesterday.
  • Volkswagen Golf VI - Returning a recently purchased car. Advice? 22 Jul 2014 (Forum)
This time the car came back out with them telling me they couldn’t find anything wrong with the car. I had to point out to them the front brake pads were disintegrating and demanded they were fixed straight away. Car went back in next day and new front pads and discs were fitted. When I was checking the brakes I uncovered a serious amount of over spray on part of the car.
  • Which? magazine advise 'Don't buy these tyres' 23 Dec 2013 (Forum)
t Buy the following: QUOTE 175/65 R14T We found the Avon CR322 Enviro was particularly poor in wet conditions A key weakness appeared to be when braking and gripping on a bend in wet conditions. Guide price: £43 Overall Score 28% Even though the Tigar TG 621 was the cheapest tyre we tested, we certainly don?t think it is a bargain. We found that the tyre gave unsatisfactory wet grip and poor wet braking performance. £33 Score 25% At around £35 the Trayal T400 might seem like a bargain.
  • Peugeot 306 - A small list of problems... 6 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Is this just a case of cable chasing for breaks from the fuse box or would it be something else?  Another problem is with hard braking there is a speed related knocking from the rear of the car. It is NOT the exhaust. The brakes aren't too clever though so would it be possible that the rear brakes are siezed? i cant get the rear drum off to look.
  • How to respond to 999 vehicles 17 Oct 2005 (Forum)
The vast majority of people do the right thing and get out of the way as soon as they spot us, even if that means flooring it past a vehicle inside. If your car is not powerful enough to do this then don't brake, put on your indicator and wait until you're past the inside car - hopefully they'll brake and make room for you. Stay safe Ronnie
  • Any - Cleaning painted alloy wheels 8 Jul 2025 (Forum)
Hi, i'm looking for suggestions for cleaning the brown brake dust deposits from painted alloy wheels. The wheels were powder coated black by a previous owner. I have tried various DIY solutions with just about every household cleaning product with no success.
  • any car - servicingstop.co.uk 5 Aug 2022 (Forum)
BUT I had to pay £32.50 for headlight aim adjust  and £45 for a handbrake adjustment on top of the service/mot cost which made a total bill of £328.60. this is almost the same that toyota would have charged and they would have done a 4 year brake fluid change to. won't be using them again.
  • A Pakistani Truck - Pakistani Truck Alternator Repair 20 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Interesting that they apparently get away with cleaning in petrol, which I’d have thought might destroy insulation, as might brake fluid, my go-to cleaner. The wire brushing seems to be just a bling thing. I wont be doing that.
