My wife was involved in a no-fault accident as a named driver on my car insurance. I decided to get the car repaired by an accreditted VW repair shop that was not on the insurance company's approved list. I was willing to pay the non approved excess for this. The insurance company said that the dash cam footage from my car was conclusive that the third party was at fault and initially said that I would NOT have to pay the compulsory or voluntary excesses, however when they realised that I had not used their repair shop they then said I would have to pay ALL excesses and claim back from the third party insurer. Surely this is immoral? Thoughts? Read more

I tried that when a truck took my VW Touareg's door mirror off, got a quote from my local dealer and sent it direct but the prevaricated for several weeks - I lost patience and gave them an ultimatum which they ignored so I went through VW Ensurance who got the repair done and hired me a M-B GLE as a like-for-like hire car - the total bill was probably double with the hire car than the quote I got for them - but they had their chance.

I suspect you were dealing not with the truck owner's insurance but the accident management company the operator has paid to 'manage' such things for them (not especially well it often turns out), which from what i'm seeing only serves to see longer delays than should be with vehicles off the road for months instead of days. before anyone gets their act together....

I've got a renault captur through the motility scheme at Arnold Clark. They have called today to say if I don't allow one of their team to pair my phone to the car it affects the warranty. Surely this can't be correct? What if I didn't have a smart phone? What they doing with my data? Read more

If you don't have the urge to contest their strange request, you could just let them have a phone with a prepaid sim in it and bin the sim when you get the car back.

Seems to be a consensus of opinion that ‘peak diesel’ was the early 2000s. Common rail or PD injection systems that give relatively quiet running, easy cold starting, plenty of torque, tall gearing, decent fuel economy and none of the emissions related DPF and AdBlue problems that blight newer diesels.

…but when was/is peak petrol? The demise of new internal combustion engines over the next decade or two could suggest that we’ve not peaked yet, but a lot of future investment will be spent on EV, hydrogen etc.

I’m minded to say some point after fuel injection became standard, but before petrol particulate filters, an excess of sensors and electronic ‘stuff’ and before the recent oddities such as belt in oil cam belts.

Perhaps the answer is a similar time period to ‘peak diesel’? Read more

.... it was the adoption of electric power steering over hydraulic that killed off the pleasure of motoring...... a quick drive in a late 90’s Ford Focus,....Mondeo or a 90’s Peugeot 306

or an early 80's TR7 with no power assistance at all

will quickly remind you of what we’ve lost.

I have my Clio booked in to have the alternator changed next week. I'm trying to find a recon unit. The garage told me I need the part number from the old one as there are several possibilities, however Autodoc online found me an alternator after asking for the car's VIN. Should I trust Autodoc, or wait for the part number from the original? Read more

Thanks for the reply, I'll talk to the garage tomorrow.

My folks are fairly advanced in years now. They’ve had their current 2018 Fiesta for around 4 years now and specifically went for a Zetec spec to avoid what they perceived to be the fripperies of the Titanium. My Dad is pretty pleased to have avoided keyless entry, climate control and low profile tyres which he believes (probably quite correctly!) to be noisy, expensive to replace, prone to punctures and blowouts, all whilst delivering a hard ride!

It does have six gears, although my Mum appears to be unaware of this and sticks with 5th when on faster roads!

On my 1.9 tdi 130bhp mk4 golf i recently purchased its got a problem starting

  • warm or cold the issue is there
  • It doesnt cut out when driving, drives and runs perfect, no smoke
  • The key has to be held on a few seconds extra to start than normal, sometimes this then puts the EML and flashing glow plug light on the dash 'emissions workshop'
  • fault code says p0321 engine speed sensor intermittent
  • Have changed the crankshaft sensor but no different
  • tested a battery from another car that is working good, again no different

096 is the battery size, could this be upgraded to a bigger one? Or what else could I check? Read more

Thanks John but managed to get it sorted. The Torsion angle on the cam pulley needed adjusted ever so slightly. Starting perfect now. I can only assume it was out due to a cambelt change in the past.

Hi,I have recently bought a 520d SE,the current tyres are 7 years old,5mm left, run flats.I have a mind to replace them but am getting conflicting opinions as to whether to ditch the run flats.Would it affect my insurance and what happens in the event of a puncture with normal tyres and I call the breakdown people out with no spare? Also is there a big difference in noise/handling going to normal tyres?…Thanks ???? I have found Continental runflats suit my 3 series, but having said that, during the lockdowns I couldn't get them in the right size for the rears. Fitted Hankook instead. No issues with them.
