January 2024
I recently bought a car which was first registered in January 2024 but it was manufactured in Sep 2023. Basically came of the production in Sep. When I checked DVLA, it is also showing year of manufacture as 2024. Is this normal for cars purchased in January? Any problems if HPI checks are run down the line. Read more
I bought a three years old Kia Rio from an Hyundai garage. A few months later i visited a Kia garage and showed them my service book. I was told that the warranty was void because the second service had been done at 22k miles instead of 20k.
Has anybody ever been caught like that ? I think it’s somehow unfair. Read more
The annual MoT test does the checks performed at a ’service’.
Indeed, and it only costs a fraction of the £250 a garage charges for their ’inspection’ and an oil change. The MOT inspection is also way more thorough, and for only £50 or so, and you can actually see them doing it, although you dont get the inspection sheet with a hundred ticks on it.
Hi,
I'm completely clueless when it comes to cars. Just go for which I like the look of. So I'm after some advice. I'm looking to trade my Audi A1 63 plate in for a newer car. Not brand new, between 2/5 years old. ... Read more
We've got a low mileage 2019 T4 XC40. It's generally a good car and I would sum it up as worthy but dull. My biggest complaint, apart from poor fuel consumption, and rather odd steering feel, is the complete lack of help from the dealers, or even Volvo UK, when something goes wrong. Ours has a broken tailgate handle; it's known design fault and there's a Service Action in North America, but here you have no chance! In fact one dealer wants £168 to diagnose it before they'll even work on it...
Evening all
I've been chatting to a couple of used car dealers in the Durham area and some of them recon that used car prices will fall later this year around August to October, possible with the new car supply situation easing, would this be correct any ideas if this would be correct? Read more

Hi,
Any suggestions for reliable steering wheel locks for automatic cars?
I bought a twin bar lock from Amazon, It came in its own box but the box was not seal packed. Is it normal that items like these do not come in a sealed packaging just like some hardware items come loose and not sealed. It’s my first time buying one so making an assumption that security devices like these should come in a sealed box otherwise how does a customer know that the keys have not copied over or the item has not been tampered with. I don't think there's a lot more to add to Andrew's line of of logic and reasoning. The previous reply includes two "suppose"s and one "possibly" and I fear may not be definitive advice when looking to approach the matter of enhanced security of one's wheels.
When you've actually had a car stolen from you you tend to look at these things with a degree more seriousness....
Decided to have a drive around for a few days stopping overnight wherever I fancied. I noticed day one that one tyre was very slightly down on pressure. I topped up the tyre and popped into a tyre bay then another tyre bay and soon realised that the days of simply rolling up and waiting appear to be a thing of the past. Finally booked my car in for Sunday after arriving home Wednesday I could have got Saturday but this wouldn't be convenient.
My tyre hasn't obviously lost any pressure at this moment in time and my car has a space saver but it got me thinking what a major issue this could be for a whole range of people. I wonder what a young family stranded on holiday with a car full of luggage would do if told oh no problem we can fit you in tomorrow! I will never buy a car without some sort of spare wheel. My tyre issue. Another flat, nice nail in it. Repair tomorrow. Pressure sensor is of course useless as it didn’t tell me because it needs a while to recalibrate to let me know. I noticed the steering wasn’t right!

If the insurance company won't increase the offer, inform them and the other driver that you will use Money Claim to recover the £3K directly from the driver, other driver should then put additional pressure on his insurance company.
A colleague had pointed out to them their car was leaving pools of liquid under it when parked. They admitted they were having to top-up the coolant regularly, so they tried to book it into the main dealer, who stated there'd be a £180 charge to plug it into diagnostics!
They took it to a local quick-fit type place, who looked under the bonnet, told them it was the water pump and gave them a price to replace it.... Read more
My OBD2 code reader cost £45 ten years ago.
Mine cost £15. More than paid for itself the couple of times it's been used (crosses fingers and throws salt over shoulder).
Hi, looking for help with car choice please.
Need a car for general around town use, and reliable, budget is £10k.
I prefer small car and auto, would consider manual if auto is not a good option but really would prefer an auto.
A BMW 1 series was a car I was craving but having read a load on here, I guess it needs to stay a dream, my 2nd choice was an Audi A3 but my budget is probably too small for a good condition car so I think a Mazda 3 is probably a good choice? I ready like the shape and the interior of the Mazda, again read on here a Focus is probably the smarter choice but I don’t like the look of that car, As much as I have tried making myself like it.
I’ve looked on Mazda approved cars and would like to buy from them I but if I can get much more for my money would look else where…seen a couple of Mazda on there around 50k miles 2015-2016 for around £10k, does that sound reasonable?
From my research think a petrol 1.6 sport nav is the one to go for?
Any comments on any of this gratefully received as I know next to nothing about cars. Read more
Thanks, really appreciate the detailed reply, I’ll have to look into the SE-L as I thought the sport was the one to go for, also the Cx-3, I’ll take a look.
There'll be lots of Sport / Sport Nav / Sport Black variants available at main dealers, far more than the SE-L (Nav) and SE (Nav) versions because that seems to be what Mazda likes selling. Whether that actually equates to actual demand is another question. The SE-L (Nav) spec comes with quite a decent lot of kit, especially in the Mazda3.
I think that part of the reason why so many 'Sport' versions and diesels end up as second hand back on sale is because owners (this is common across most makes of car in my view) want to get rid of them after the ride on low profile tyres (and firmer suspension on some makes) firms up after 1-3 years. I suspect that owners of SE-L (Nav) models like them and keep them much longer....
Hi, I'm hoping someone on here may have some insight and take the time to respond.
My husband has recently received a SP30, he's been on 9 points for some time. 6 of those points expired days after the new offence. Though I know that doesn't matter, I am wondering if any leniency would be show to this? And/or the fact that 3 of the now expired points relate not to speeding but a bad tire?... Read more
