Hi everyone! :)
I have the BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK LM005 winter tyres and it appears I've hit something, which has cut out a bit of the rubber of the side wall. The depth of the cut is about 1-2mm and overall size of the cut-out piece, when u look at it from the side, is 20x30mm.... Read more
I wouldn't worry. The pressure in a car tyre is far lower than in a much thinner and flimsier bicycle tyre. (Mine recommend 80psi) If you really want to check its conformity and continence, pump it up to the maximum allowed (it'll probably say on the sidewall somewhere - usually circa 50psi) and go for a short drive.
With respect, John F, I seem to remember that the tension in the walls of a cylinder or tube is dependent not only on the pressure but also by the internal diameter....
Hello
Tomorrow I was hoping to rotate tyres from the back to the front and front to back to get a few more miles out of them so they wear out at the same time.... Read more
<< Whatever the manufacturers say I think it's best to have all the tyres with roughly the same tread depth. >>

I was coming out from the side road and was slowing down the vehicle to stop at the junction to turn right onto the right side all of a sudden an oncoming car from the left took a sharp turn and damaged the driver side front end and her driver side rear door was damaged upto the rear wheel arch my question is will insurance see me at fault however I was completely stationary at the junction behind the giveaway lines and third party was at a high speed to avoid oncoming car from the opposite direction.

I'm finding it hard to follow the thread as it doesn't have any punctuation.

We’ve had three…and a half. All originally company cars (aside from the half!)
1. 2001 GT TDI PD 115. Only had it for 6 months and around 12,000 miles, as the company folded and the car went back. First car I had with six gears. Seemed very novel cruising at 70 mph with the engine ticking over at 2,000 rpm.
2. 2011 2.0 TDI Match Bluemotion Tech. Ran this as a company car for around nine months, moved to another job but bought the car, as we needed a vehicle and it was decent value. Still got it. Initially it clocked up around 15,000 miles a year, but this has now dropped to around 6,000. Currently on 107,000 and has been very reliable. Not really suited to the shorter journeys that it generally does now, but it gets a longer run every couple of weeks to keep the DPF sweet. Only seen the DPF warning light once and that was during the first lockdown when it was doing no decent runs. Only non routine part that’s been needed was an EGR cooler.
3. 2016 GTD Estate. Ran this for four years and around 70,000 miles. Really practical for the family and dog. Never missed a beat, but you could really tell whenever it was doing a DPF regen due to a very lumpy tickover. Quick, reasonably refined and decent MPG.
…and then the half! 2001 Beetle 2.0. My Mrs opted out of her car scheme at work, took the cash allowance and bought the Beetle. We ran this for ten years and 120,000 miles. Not very practical, but comfortable enough in the front. Huge thirst for oil. Piston rings replaced under warranty but made no difference. Aside from that, pretty reliable; but slow, gutless, thirsty and extremely low geared.
My wife was involved in a no-fault accident as a named driver on my car insurance. I decided to get the car repaired by an accreditted VW repair shop that was not on the insurance company's approved list. I was willing to pay the non approved excess for this. The insurance company said that the dash cam footage from my car was conclusive that the third party was at fault and initially said that I would NOT have to pay the compulsory or voluntary excesses, however when they realised that I had not used their repair shop they then said I would have to pay ALL excesses and claim back from the third party insurer. Surely this is immoral? Thoughts? Read more
I tried that when a truck took my VW Touareg's door mirror off, got a quote from my local dealer and sent it direct but the prevaricated for several weeks - I lost patience and gave them an ultimatum which they ignored so I went through VW Ensurance who got the repair done and hired me a M-B GLE as a like-for-like hire car - the total bill was probably double with the hire car than the quote I got for them - but they had their chance.
I suspect you were dealing not with the truck owner's insurance but the accident management company the operator has paid to 'manage' such things for them (not especially well it often turns out), which from what i'm seeing only serves to see longer delays than should be with vehicles off the road for months instead of days. before anyone gets their act together....
I've got a renault captur through the motility scheme at Arnold Clark. They have called today to say if I don't allow one of their team to pair my phone to the car it affects the warranty. Surely this can't be correct? What if I didn't have a smart phone? What they doing with my data? Read more
If you don't have the urge to contest their strange request, you could just let them have a phone with a prepaid sim in it and bin the sim when you get the car back.
Seems to be a consensus of opinion that ‘peak diesel’ was the early 2000s. Common rail or PD injection systems that give relatively quiet running, easy cold starting, plenty of torque, tall gearing, decent fuel economy and none of the emissions related DPF and AdBlue problems that blight newer diesels.
…but when was/is peak petrol? The demise of new internal combustion engines over the next decade or two could suggest that we’ve not peaked yet, but a lot of future investment will be spent on EV, hydrogen etc.
I’m minded to say some point after fuel injection became standard, but before petrol particulate filters, an excess of sensors and electronic ‘stuff’ and before the recent oddities such as belt in oil cam belts.
Perhaps the answer is a similar time period to ‘peak diesel’? Read more
.... it was the adoption of electric power steering over hydraulic that killed off the pleasure of motoring...... a quick drive in a late 90’s Ford Focus,....Mondeo or a 90’s Peugeot 306
or an early 80's TR7 with no power assistance at all
will quickly remind you of what we’ve lost.
