So much so we were on the verge of considering a Clio as our second car... Read more

I have a Clio E-tech and find the auto box brilliant. It 'creeps' at low speeds just like a TC transmission but there is none of the 'slipping clutch' feel that some autos have. The car pulls away from standstill in electric mode and can be very quick off the mark if needed. Once on the move, gear changes are seamless. Fuel consumption has averaged 58.5mpg over the first 5000 miles. 2440 of those miles have been covered in electric mode.

Have just past the 2000 mile in our Dacia Jogger and are averaging 65mpg so far - think that's pretty good for an estate-ish car. Was worried we'd not get as good as we did in our previous diesel car but have exceeded what that could do 60mpg.

A positive experience to report.

Had a recall for the Korando, but local dealer no longer selling them or able to do Warranty work, so off we went to Abbeygate in Wymondham, bit of a trek to get there, but nice breakfast in the town and in went the car. 3rd year service at the same time 2 months early, but a long way to go otherwise.... Its posts (and invoices) like that which more than ever convince me to keep our old motors running for as long as possible.

Hi, I just joined this forum while in the process of buying a new car. We are a retired couple living near the Sussex coast and recently 'lost' our only car - a 20 year old Subaru Outback - when it failed MOT and the estimated cost of repair could not be justified. But as this coincided with a time of us being out of the country for a few months, we have SORNed the Subaru and left it in the car park of our apartment block until such time that we can get back to the UK, retrieve our belongings from the car, clear it and get a few pictures before sending it to the dismantler.

Meanwhile, I have done some research about which new car suits us best and after shortlisting and further checking, decided on the Honda Jazz Crosstar Advance, which is a 'self-charging hybrid'. Just about the only drawback is the rather bland choice of colours.... Read more

Only if you subscribe to the notion that starting the car up and leaving it idling for half an hour is a good thing. As I said earlier I don't.

Thanks again and you are absolutely correct....

My new Suzuki Swift arrived in the UK (Southampton?) from Japan on 11th June and five weeks later it’s still there with no sign of anything happening. The dealer seems unable to find out when it will be delivered to them and I don’t understand why it should take so long.

Has anyone experienced the same? It’s very frustrating that the journey from Japan is quicker than processing the car in the UK and getting it on a transporter! Read more

Maybe previous versions were produced in Hungary, but the new 2024 models are definitely made in Japan!

Mercedes’ 220 8 years old stolen. Just had it serviced and the MOT. done. Question is can I transfer the insurance to a new car or is it start again?. Got to start looking for a car and next years insurance will go through the roof. Any suggestions appreciated. Read more

Warning

Assuming that you are claiming the value of the stolen car from your insurers, that will end your Insurance Policy. Any replacement car will need a new Policy.

Imagine you purchase a 12-month car insurance policy for £1,200, with a £300 excess....

Too many cases of failures with this engine to recommend one as a used purchase, wet belt designs are notoriously fragile no matter who builds them. But if you’re buying or leasing new and getting shot of it before the warranty is up then there’s no real risk. As for performance, the 130PS motor goes very well and should be perfectly capable. If you’re buying a nearly new dealer approved example then factor in the cost of a manufacturer backed extended warranty into the equation and the cost of main dealer servicing to make sure said warranty remains valid and any recalls are caught.

I am in the process of purchasing a second hand Mazda CX5 2019 plate. The approved dealer is offering an Autoglym Ceramic coating (with lifetime warranty, with whatever preconditions that will include to be claimable) for £350. ... Read more

Not necessary but I think washing the paintwork down is useful to get all the salt, mud and bird droppings off.

Yes, I reckon bird droppings mustn't be left to do their work. After just a few days they can attack a lacquer coating further than can be polished away. Wipe off while still fresh or damp.

So, friends son passed his test last year, bought a Corsa (which didn't last long) and is actually a very cautious driver.

After a long day as a brickie had nothing to eat allegedly had a single pint on the way home and stopped for driving at 30 in a 40 zone, breathalysed, booked taken in and over the limit as a new driver. £700 fine, 12 points and 17 month disqualification. (YEP ! )... Read more

The limit in England is the same for a new driver as an experienced one.

I guess he wouldn't be drinking brown beer. A full pint of 5% lager would contain up to 28ml of alcohol. One unit = 10ml., so nearly 3 units. The official advice says the limit can roughly be equated to 4 units for men and 3 for women.

So unless he's a big lad I can believe he might be marginal on one pint, quaffed quickly, on an empty stomach say an hour after drinking it.

Warning

Obtaining car insurance can be a hassle, and sometimes, companies won't even provide a quote or a quote which is astronomic.

Recently, travellers have been setting up their caravans in public open spaces (park). It's quite frustrating, as it no longer feels safe to go for a jog or walk. Fewer people are using the parks. There are several low-height barriers, yet it's unclear how they managed to get in.... Read more

Don’t insurance applications request where the vehicle will usually be parked overnight and during the day? This is not necessarily the home address.

Cant remember. I think the company specialised in insuring Australian globetrotters who probably didn't have a permanent UK address either....
