My local "2 blokes in a cabin" dealer sells a lot of imported BMWs, seemingly successfully. They told me that they can get the higher performance models (M3s etc) at a much better price than in the UK and they sell very nicely. The market for these tends to be younger men who want to show off, and are perhaps less concerned about service history and more about cost.

I've owned three Japanese imports over the years and had no problems. The main issue tends to be that they're not undersealed, so you need to take care of that. They used to export a lot of ropey diesels, which always seemed to have the wrong coolant in, but that seems less common. ...

I've been reading about various engine flush products online, mainly LIQUI MOLY, which some people swear by.

Is there any real benefit to using such products? I service my diesel myself every 10k, which exceeds the manufacturer's recommendation, and it has just short of 80k miles on the clock.

Just interested to know opinions and experiences. Read more

A startling resemblance to Oil Additives!

So do you still stick to good old-fashioned Mineral Oil for all your modern cars ?...

Hi, my new to me Mercedes came with Collision avoidance system.

I hate it! It's constantly warning of nearby traffic during normal uk driving, in tight corners in town, it will slam on the brakes when parked cars are nearby.... Read more

Unfortunately, I think it will be alternative A. The lane control system in our B-class is equally infuriating. If there are roadworks with temporary lanes, it will slam on the brakes as you cross the permanent white lines. If someone was too close behind, how would they brake in time?

I see there is a review of the latest electric Fiat on the homepage. I've not yet read the review, but was struck by how much the 'face' of the car looks like George from Rainbow. I don't imagine it's going to be very popular here.. Read more

I'm closing this one now as I think we've covered the Vivaro article. It will be interesting to see the fire report when it's ready.

Also the specific EV thread will be running imminently where discussions like these can take place. ...

How ironic in this age of advanced electronic wizardry there are numerous complaints on JLR models whereby sounds are either too quiet or too loud & cannot be adjusted. I refer to the 5 Oct complaint of indicator sound too quiet. Do the brains at Jaguar not realise this is a SAFETY warning & should be heard. The default sound level should be loud enough to be heard-it's nonsense spouted by JLR to say a safety warning shouldn't intrude on refinement - Jaguar cars in the past have been noted for refinement even though the indicator sound is clearly audible. As a suggestion, radios for a long time have had automatic volume increase as speed increases so why not on indicator volume?

Another common complaint on JLR models(the reverse of quiet indicator noise) is the fact that the Sat nav volume cannot be adjusted below a pre adjusted volume & in this case can be too loud(Evoque for example has a minimum sat nav guidance level of volume 20). I understand JLR say(ironically)it's for safety warning reasons but that again doesn't make sense as the voice can be muted altogether. I have seen other cars whereby the driver is able to adjust the sat nav guidance throughout it's range from quiet to loud, i.e. to suit the driver in different driving conditions.... Read more

Hi ,

I’d be grateful of any advice.. I have a Nissan micra 2004
and it failed it’s mot due to the fuel pipe been corroded where
the fuel cap goes on. I’ve done some work on cars before but
not in a while now and I am wondering if the fuel pipe would be
an easy job to do my self. I’d be grateful of any advice.

Thanks

The proposal is to raise the age a person can buy tobacco products by one year every year starting in 2027. The idea being that anyone born after 1st January 2009 will never be able to buy cigarettes etc no matter how old they are. I wonder if this would work and how it would be enforced. Lots of potential aggro for shop workers. "Sorry sir, you don't look 43 to me, have you got any ID?" Perhaps by that time we will all have implanted microchips :-) Read more

Laws banning things like drugs, alcohol, tobacco, guns, prescription drugs etc etc will all create a criminal opportunity for illegal supply.

That all these "banned" products can be obtained on a black market does not make a ban pointless. It will significantly reduce their use or incidence....
