Hi, my 2007 xc90 d5 starts from cold very rough. Probably misfiring. It jutters for 30 seconds or so then drives perfect for the rest of the journey. Cold starts only.

I also noticed a gurgling sound from possibly the engine when driving. Happens upon acceleration. I uploaded the sound below. Turn volume up and wait for the gurgling. That is when I accelerate.

Would love your thoughts as to whether this is normal. Or what it could be.

New fuel filter fitted. Apparently injectors were tested with leak off test. I'm not convinced.

Could there be condensate and/or excess fuel pooling in an exhaust resonator chamber?

I'd expect if it were this, you'd probably have visible liquid spray at the exhaust end until it cleared, though, so maybe not.

Not very scientific, but I thought this was interesting. My wife’s ‘dirty’ 2011 Golf 2.0 TDI diesel has just passed its MOT and has 105,000 miles on the clock. It meets Euro 5 emissions regs, so should we venture to London or other urban centres in it, we’d likely have to fork out for some sort of ULEZ charge. It has a DPF which appears to be serving its intended function, as wiping a finger inside the end of the exhaust doesn’t result in a mucky/sooty finger.

My 2020 ‘clean’ Kuga 2.5 PHEV with a petrol engine and plug in hybrid capability is Euro 6 and deemed sufficiently clean to dodge any ULEZ money grabs. However, if I run my finger round the end of the exhaust, it comes out covered in soot! Clearly it doesn’t have any form of petrol GPF and it shows! I guess the idea is that the battery is charged and used for urban running to improve local air quality, but I was surprised quite how much filth was lining the exhaust pipe. Read more

It was lead from leaded petrol

Strictly speaking it was lead oxide (there are several). The plug points could be yellowish pink if the engine didn't burn much oil.

I bought a 2011 Golf Plus 4 weeks ago from a private seller. Last week the clutch went, following a few weeks of the motor over-revving. It was doing that as I drove the car back from the seller's house but didn't recognise it as being a potential clutch issue, and got a lot worse suddenly last week (the seller has refused to contribute to the cost).

Anyway, I've been quoted between £550 and £1200, depending on whether the flywheel is replaced as well as the clutch. Garages are saying that they won't give me a warranty if the flywheel isn't replaced. However my usual garage is the only one saying they'll provide a warranty after just replacing the clutch and not the flywheel.... Read more

Very good points. I'll discuss this with my garage.

Appreciate everyone's input.

Hi all, this is the first time I've ever been in a position to need advice on motoring, as I am usually a very anxious driver who never does anything wrong.

" I was on the motorway inside lane while overtaking" - do you mean that?

I can only assume the OP sees the fast lane as being on the 'inside' of a M'way ....

Anyone drive a Scala 1.0SE? What are they like on the motorway?
I only had mine yesterday from a Skoda dealer in Swansea and when i was driving to Cardiff there was quite a bit of vibration, mainly the steering wheel and drivers seat. Read more

Honestly wouldn't expect that at all....

Just noticed one of my car keys is on low battery. I read that most of them last for a few years. This car is a 2014 model. So do I need to buy a new set for this particular model? I've got a spare so at least I'm good for the moment. Read more

Metropolis.

It's odd as theses things are not usually unique to one model. I know it would be expensive but have you tried the dealer? Another method I find helps is searching google by just the part number. If you have that, then go to the 'shopping' tab items soon appear.
