Suddenly, helped by liquid refreshment, we remembered our early days of driving. Being young and keen we attended courses (that would now be called advanced driving but really everyone should be exposed to). Anyway, one of the things we were taught was that in an emergency (the example used was flooding the engine on a level crossing) you put the car into second or reverse and use the starter motor to get you to safety. Is there a way that can still be done on a modern car? Certainly on the cars we have we couldn't do it. The starter simply doesn't turn when in gear. I appreciate it is somewhat random but that technique got me out of trouble regularly with an old GTV (which was truly unreliable). Read more
Sure it works on a manual but if you have an Auto, don't waste your time. Last time I did that was in a 65 Ford Corsair 1500 to get it to the side of the road.

Mine did nothing. Probably lack of signal.
Strangely enough my phone remained silent while my wife's went off?...

Greetings everyone,
I am sure this question has been asked many times before. But I would really appreciate your advise based on current circumstances.
I am after my first family car as I am currently driving a mk5 Golf and it needs to be replaced due to upcoming ULEZ changes. My budget is under £15k.
I have narrowed down my search to a saloon or a small suv. Also I would like to experience premium brand for first time hence I am really keen on a BMW.
I have found a 320d 2015 with 72k approved BMW used example at £12k and a 2017 X1 18d for £14k with similar mileage. Both are automatic as I only have automatic license
I understand 3 series is a much better car for driving enjoyment. But my main preference is comfort and a family car . So I am leaning more toward X1 as I believe it will hold its value better and might be more practical.
Can anyone please guide me based on above? Also advise which of these car have lower running costs?
Thank you

I agree with you.
Where can I get a market value for insurance purposes for a 1992 Vauxhall Nova 1.2i hatchback with 52,000 miles? There are three Novas for sale on Auto Trader varying from £5k to £7.5k. Are these representative of today's market valuation? Read more
Ebay, but tick the boxes for SOLD and COMPLETED ITEMS.
Then check to see if any have been relisted - a staggering number always get re-listed due to a non paying bidder.
Thinking of something like this:
If ours discovers a hog in the evening it's a nightmare getting him to settle for bed. He almost blows a gasket if he comes face to face with one. We've unfortunately had to stop leaving food out for them which is a shame because they need all the help they can get.
Morning all I would like to know if anyone else has ever come across this issue.Ive got 2006 bauxhall vectra c diesel It recently went into limp mode ,but when my mechanic came out and plugged code check machine in ,some things came up ,obviously, but then he couldn't clear codes again ,tried loads of times, he's s*** hot with.vauxhalls ,but this has left him completely baffled Help please Read more
Not clear if he has actually fixed the problem or is just trying to reset the codes. If fault is permanent then I would doubt if codes will clear.
Just had one of these as a hire car for few days.
The seats are squishy and the engine is pretty good. The SatNav works and infotainment in general is OK, if a little hard to navigate. We had four adults sat in it in comfort and five could fit. Boot was a decent size and shape too.... Read more
Thanks for the information. I should really move with the times. My 2021 Duster has an ignition key, a proper handbrake and old fashioned controls for the heating etc. Oh, and a spare wheel too. A CD player would have been nice.
Aircross has a proper handbrake although, for reasons unknown, it has a kind of t-bar shape with and enormous handle on the end. Presumably for those flippers again.
Speaking to an Australian who was visiting Goodwood Festival he told me that Honda are closing their dealerships in Australia and customers must order on line! Maybe a forerunner of abandoning their presence in that country

“ The other consideration is that what would have been then a wam or hottish hatch if you look to acceleration times and top speeds, can often be found in a mundane hatch these days.
Our 123hp Leon with a 1.4 engine us quicker than an old Golf GTI.”
It’s more the feel than power. Modern cars with their electric steering over hydraulic or unassisted racks have no feel. They’re often overpowered and artificial in feeling with all the electronic trickery such as traction and stability control. Power doesn’t equal fun in my view. I’d sooner take an old Peugeot 306 GTi-6 or Renault Clio 16v down a winding B road than todays 300bhp plus £50k upwards hot hatches. In fact the best fun I’ve had behind the wheel was at the helm of of a Metro 1.4 GTA or Pug 106 XSi back in the day. Foot to the floor fun.
