Hello all,

Purchased an "Approved Used" car from a main dealer

The dealer mis-sold service history and warranty
Promised FSH but car has partial history with 6 years history missing.
Warranty is invalid as the condition for warranty needs car to have service done annually.

After threatening with legal action, they are offering a full refund. No apology or admission of mistake. Rather praising their ethos.

However I did not ask for a full refund. My offer was to refund some amount to reflect the true value as the car is not worth what I paid for - due to partial history and no warranty. In my proposals I have asked 20% of the price I paid as refund.

I do not ideally prefer to return the car as I like it and it does not have any issue and it will be hassle and additional expenses (parking permit, insurance etc) to get another car. Plus the time I will be without a car.... Read more

Started work this morning and had a double take at the Chevette parked at the other side of the road!

Not a 2300HS, but a remarkable nice looking X reg example in metallic blue sitting on minilite style allows. I hope the owner does have a garage because the Peterhead climate won't do it any good!

It’s looking we’re coming to the end of the road for the Land Rover brand, it won’t be used in future.
Jaguar Land Rover will officially become JLR, and they’ll sell Jaguar, Defender, Discovery and Range Rover products.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that they own a Land Rover Range Rover, so that had been a brand of its own for years.

To be honest I don’t care if stuff goes wrong but as long as it’s sorted without fuss.

Easy to say that if you are driving a car which doesn't break down often. But if you are, and the new car in question cost upwards of £60k, I suspect that attitude would change quite quickly!...

I had been interested in a new Civic Hybrid when the price of the base model was around £31000. Then they canned the base model and the Sport became the base model at over £34000. Then the price of the Sport went up twice to nearer £36000 and the top spec model to near £40000. Pretty much lost interest now.

Went to look at one at a dealership and when I asked why the prices had rocketed, he virtually said it was because of all the good reviews the car had received in the motoring press. Whether this is true or not I don't know but a car is reviewed taking into account its list price at the time. Would it have reviewed as well at an inflated price....

Very much in the news lately is the growing tendency for councils and private parking companies to switch to a non cash system. This has not reached where I live and I was wondering what the forum thinks. It seems the older generation is making the most fuss and a dexterity of thumbs and fingers seems to be required to operate your smart phone as some 100 plus keys going up to as much as 226 need to be pushed. The process from what I read can take ages and there are numerous apps for different parking companies. I just hope Cornwall for my hols is App free or I will be driving in and straight out of its car parks! Read more

Next there'll be a Dispatches type program aired complaining about the destruction of the high street, the disappearance of people with money to spend, they never came back the second national house arrest was cancelled and we're going to ask why.

Is there anyone in charge anywhere in this country from number 1o down with an ounce of grey matter, towns depend on solvent people wishing to visit and spending their money to keep the centres viable.

So, what we'll do is make the roads as difficult to negotiate as possible for cars, we'll charge (fine) people with the wrong cars for daring to approach our town and because people always go shopping and visiting cities with their familes on bicycles we'll narrow the roads off and make cyclists a priority.
We'll plant dozens of signposts to make sure a few hundred stray inadvertantly into a bus lane so we can fine them.
If trhey don't give up and actually arrive at the town in their polluting killer car we'll make it as difficult as possible for the mug, sorry, punter to park and charge them over the odds too once they've fathomed out how to pay the fee, if they happen to need a pee after all this faff we'll charge them for that too if they can find a loo at all....well done Claude have a gong or three, you've made the town as inhospitable as possible, we on the council are behind you all the way.

i could go on but you get the picture, the more unpleasant complicated and frustrating you make an experience the fewer people will comply.

These same people can't understand why Amazon and those huge retail parks where parking is free and where dangerous people generally arn't lurking about have done so well.

I am a fairly new driver in my late 30s and in the last month or so I've had my first car I've been driving almost every day. I really enjoy the experience and it helps I have a half decent car to drive. I waited several years to learn as I didn't bother to learn living in London nearly my entire life so I guess this is catching up for all that lost time.

However despite this, since I started I have developed what I would call new driver paranoia. Every week, I keep having this thought that my mistakes are being captured and watched on camera and I have had a few sloppy moments. I then go on Google maps and examine the area and try and see if there are any cameras or cctv in that specific area!... Read more

I remember hearing about a friend (I didn't witness it) chewing through his pipe stem while driving in Europe ....

What happened to the bowl? Did it drop in his lap and give him more than the traffic to worry about?

Ford focus 2006 1.6 the EML light came on, plugged it in & got a P2303 fault code. Also in first gear only if you try to take off quick it starts to judder/kangaroo but will take off fine if you take off normally/slower if that relates to the issue at all? Read more

Coil pack failure is quite common, fortunately it's a fairly cheap fix. Do asap to stop further damage - whilst misfiring unburnt fuel is being sent down the exhaust and can damage sensors & the catalyst all of which cost considerably more.

I am new to UK. I am planning to get a 3-4 years old used automatic for 15K-20K. Being not sure of the road conditions (portholes, countryside roads etc), I consider Ford Focus Active, Toyota CHR, Suzuki Vitara due to their greater ground clearance. Is my concern valid? It not, I can expand my choice to include normal Focus, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and many others.

I am inclined towards approved used cars but they might not be available, especially Ford Focus Active. Some Ford dealers have many used Ford cars but not all of them are approved by Ford despite being in very good conditions according to sellers. One silly question is that why those cars are not approved by Ford.... Read more

You'd have to trap all the CO2 produced in combustion, then you'd have to put it somewhere harmless, like maybe a very big sealed greenhouse.

Speaking to a retired mechanic with 50 years in the trade and working on all makes he attributes the high rate of failures in timing chains and other components to the increasing use of Chinese sourced metal .

I’ve heard that many.companies have taken the opportunity to fit Chinese made parts with dissasterous results . For example the heater/fan control unit in the epace but would this explain cam chain and tensioners failures in BMW and Audi /VW V6 engines ? Read more

I quite like DCTs. As I've said, probably in this thread, I didn't like the DSG in my golf, but do like it in my Karoq. I don't know if they're different boxes or it was just the auto hold thing. I had one in a Mini too, and really liked it.

To drive, they're a bit jerkier than TCs at low speeds and a bit smoother on the move. They certainly seem more responsive and more efficient. The problem with them is just that they're a bit fragile....
