Speaking to a retired mechanic with 50 years in the trade and working on all makes he attributes the high rate of failures in timing chains and other components to the increasing use of Chinese sourced metal .

I’ve heard that many.companies have taken the opportunity to fit Chinese made parts with dissasterous results . For example the heater/fan control unit in the epace but would this explain cam chain and tensioners failures in BMW and Audi /VW V6 engines ? Read more

I quite like DCTs. As I've said, probably in this thread, I didn't like the DSG in my golf, but do like it in my Karoq. I don't know if they're different boxes or it was just the auto hold thing. I had one in a Mini too, and really liked it.

To drive, they're a bit jerkier than TCs at low speeds and a bit smoother on the move. They certainly seem more responsive and more efficient. The problem with them is just that they're a bit fragile....

Following ongoing issues with the DPF on my volvo. Almost ever since I bought it it’s has some sort of issue/regen/replace. Been advised it’s all sorts of issues from injectors to sensors to the DPF itself I have been given what I think is some plain sound advice from my local garage.
I had an engine system warning light come on and then the car died while out driving. I towed it to the local garage where they investigated and showed me what they believe to be the issue. The diesel they removed from the car was a deep yellow/orange, so they think that the Pat fluid is not mixing into the diesel correctly, made worse by a small amount of fuel in the tank.
They believe that I probably need a new Pat fluid sensor and need it calibrated so that the correct amount is put into the fuel.
Anyone have any experience with this?
The local garage say they can replace the tank and sensor, but Volvo would have to recalibrate so it would be better to get it fixed (at HUGE expense) by Volvo.
Any advice/experience would be hugely appreciated!! Read more

The DV6 is a PSA unit which, of course, is also used in Peugeot, Citroen etc models including our Berlingo.

AIUI the EOLYS fluid is held in a container at the rear of the vehicle with a tiny quantity being injected into the fuel tank when the car is refuelled. Its purpose is to allow the DPF to keep form becoming blocked with soot which is, instead, burned off. ...

Just a note really, Many will remember the days that Haulage contractors used to block the motorways and roads in protest to the high cost of diesel and very often the price dropped and yet we have seen the prices up to £2 a liter and we don't hear anything from the road haulage companies and i wonder why.

We all know that their is a big gap between unleaded and Diesel and if you look at the price of Diesel over in Northern Ireland with the average price down to £1.47 compared with £1.58 in the most parts of England.... Read more

Good bit of information.

Drive 250 miles from Colchester to Liverpool, then drive home. If the tank was half full on leaving Colchester it would still be about half full when you get back....

We are due to travel down from Scotland to Yorkshire on Wednesday to collect a 2nd hand golf from a fairly large non franchised dealer. We haven't seen the car, just a video and have paid a £500 deposit. The dealer is asking for payment of balance 24h in advance of collection (£15K).

We've bought a few cars over the years and always just handed our credit card over to pay on the day of collection with no problems. I feel a little uneasy paying the full whack before I've even physically seen the car.... Read more

Accountability from government is unfortunately an old faded memory.

Rules for them and rules for us. We are not allowed rain from our roofs to go into the waste water sewers, but water companies can discharge said sewers into the rivers, criminal which ever way you look at it....

As you have found a 'defect' and corrected it, I would assume you could drive the car as usual. But this is a car with some built-in 'intelligence' so it may choose to do something unexpected. OTOH you said 'the oil light' which I would take as a warning - to which you have responded. Does the handbook suggest anything ?

Hi All,

desperately need help, no one seems to be telling me what I need so maybe it's very simple and I'm acting a muppet, but I'm just trying to finish wiring up a GPS tracker into the rear cargo fuse box. I only have one slot available, which is slot no. 11 (tailgate option 40amp). I was going to use a spare connector cable with a jumper from my dash came and slot in one of the main fuse slots, but they don't have metal holding pins in the back, so the only one I can use is the number 11 with two pins sticking out. Unless I piggyback of the other three which are tailgate lights and rear heater. Does anybody know what type of connection block I need, which will slot onto these fusebox pins in connector slot no. 11 and then to the positive cable of the GPS tracker? I currently have the pos cable going to nothing and the neg grounded to the car. Is someone could help, would be most grateful. Thanks ... Read more

How about using a piggy-back fuse?

James Girdler

Hi All,

Need some help, wiring in a GPS tracker on my car, using the rear cargo fuse box which currently has 3 connections being used, tailgate lights and heater. There are no pins at the back of the connector slots in any of the others, so I can't use my surplus dash cam cables with jumpers connectors. The only free slot is No. 11 which is unused and a trailer hitch option, and the only one with metal pins. Only thing is it's a smaller connection and I can't find what connector to use. For someone who knows what they're talking about might be a simple fix. It's a 40amp capacity slot, but I was going to use a 2amp fuse to avoid electrical fires if there's an issue. I just need to find what connector to fixed the positive cable of the tracker to and then slot it in the slot .I've currently attached the neg to a ground but just need help with the final steps. I bought a fuse from Halfords, which is 40amp, which fits the slot, it's a block fuse, but don't think this is what I need. Someone said just use spade connectors and slot on the pins. But would that be safe and for both pos and negative cables of the tracker? ... Read more

There are no specific pins that fit the fuse contacts, but you can use an “add a circuit “ piggy back fuse holder . Available on line . Just make sure you get the correct type . There are at least 4 different sizes depending on type of fuse used in your box .

Do the dealers buy new cars from factory using their own money or they borrow the car from manufacturers and pay them back only when the cars are sold?

Most new stock will be on a manufacturer or importer run stocking finance system, some larger dealers (such as Arnold Clark) used to bulk buy and sell cheap using their own funds I believe but the days of forecourts being full of pre-reg bargains are gone sadly.

The dealer I worked for owned all their used stock outright, they were cash rich and stable. But even they had all their new stock on a financing agreement with Mitsubishi and Proton.

Followed manual about changing the rear wiper and it doesn't come down I took it to Halfords and they gave up....I followed the instructions as written by a person on this site, saying using the process of getting the front wipers to stop half way will also bring the rear wiper to rest mid screen, that doesn't work either.....any ideas Read more

Putting the front blades into service mode , should put the rear into the same .

'Service Mode' !! Good grief, why do some manufacturers make life so complicated ?
