Well thanks, but recently cross-threading at least one spark plug wasn't very admirable, and might trigger "a series of unfortunate events" if/when I take the head off, perhaps tomorrow.

Hi all hope someone can help. I have recently applied to have my van scrapped for the ULEZ scrappage scheme in London. They asked me to send pages 1 &2 of my V5, which I did. Today they responded saying that the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is not displayed on my V5 and so I'm not eligible for the scheme. Ive just called DVLA and they say its not printed on the V5 as the info was not made available at the time of registration; they say in order to get a fresh V5 i will need get a " Certificate of conformity" from the manufacturer. Im about to call VW about this but somehow I dont expect this will be a walk in the park, and will probably end up not getting anything from this scrappage scheme except debt, and possible be without a job. Good luck with that . Some manufacturers make it very difficult to get a COC . It may cost upwards of £250 . Think you’ve got more chance of getting the next plane into space.

I paid £400 for mine 35 years ago.. Lotus....

All my Vauxhalls had the COC included in the original document pack...

Hi everyone, I'm currently in the market for car insurance and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for finding the best deal? There are so many providers out there and I'm not sure where to start. What factors should I be considering when comparing policies? And are there any particular comparison sites or providers that you would recommend? Read more

I used to love VW as a manufacturer. The Golf was solid d gold used stock right up until and including the Mk IV, the Passat of the same era was a brilliant thing too. Sadly the bean counters took over and quality plummeted with later generations in favour of gadgets and volume. Although I personally favoured the Jetta my two favourite Golf’s were the Mk II GTI 8v, it was solid yet gutsy and good to drive, really all the car you needed. The Mk IV 1.9 TDi (130) was bombproof and did everything right, beyond the ultimate handling fun of a Ford Focus.

Since when has DVLA charged an extra £10 for renewing tax after 1st of month. A friend renewed theirs at 9am on the 1st April before using their bike and cost was £111, rate is £101.

Is this £10 standard or does it depend on amount of VED due ?... Read more

SmithyBilly

The DVLA introduced a new policy in 2021, which charges an additional £10 for renewing vehicle tax after the first day of the month in which it expires. This policy applies to all vehicles, regardless of the amount of Vehicle Excise Duty due. It is likely that your friend was charged the additional fee because they renewed their tax after the first day of the month.

As for the second question, it is possible to avoid the additional charge by declaring a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) on the first day of the month and then taxing the vehicle later that same day. But the SORN must be valid for the entire period between the expiry of the old tax disc and the commencement of the new one.

It is quite clear that there is a problem with scooters. Mixing with pedestrians they are two wheeled killers piloted by inconsiderate maniacs on pavements. In traffic they are vulnerable road users who should not mix with other motorised transport in case they get hurt or die.

Whichever explanation suits the argument being made, or perhaps both at the same time, it is unclear why only scooters should be banned. What about push bikes, e-bikes, or mopeds all of which are potentially maniac and/or vulnerable ridden. ...
