One of my neighbour's cars is a 2003 Golf 150 TDI and just hit 270,000 miles. Still goes well, recently had a new sensor as it was down on power but normal performance restored. I was amazed to learn it's still on the original clutch. Must be some kind of record. Can anyone beat that? Read more

Hi,

Today, my car has failed emission test by large margin :( It came as a bit of a surprise as last year everything was well within the limits. Today test results (required norm given in parenthesis):... Read more

Hence the rash of cat. thefts. There does not seem to be a working system to stop money being made from these thefts.

This is a new one on me.

"Noise-detecting cameras are on their way to more parts of the country in the coming weeks. Having initially been deployed in an area of Bradford, drivers in Birmingham, Bristol, and parts of Norfolk will also be monitored. If the expanded trial proves successful, the rest of the UK could well follow suit." (Sky News)... Read more

I remember shopping in our local co-op a few years ago. As we left we heard a motorbike with a loud exhaust going past the traffic lights a few hundred yards away. A couple of coppers entering the shop asked us if we knew anything about the noisy bike. How could we? It was a few hundred yards away, we couldn't see the junction as we didn't have x-ray vision and we'd only just left the shop. f*****g i****s

Were you wearing biker gear and carrying skid lids?...

I'm looking for a fun to drive family car with room for a rear facing child seat and boot space. I've found some Octavia vRS in my price range that are 15/16 plates with around 50k miles on. Would this car fit the bill and are they expensive to run/repair/maintain? It would be my first skoda. Read more

One advantage of any Volkswagen group car is that there are a decent number of genuine specialists about. If you can find a good one (rely on word of mouth rather than advertising), that will help keep maintenance costs down while still getting the car maintained correctly.

Reputation for reliability is decent enough (though see all the usual warnings about DSG gearboxes if you're after an auto). Also, don't be tempted to get an older one and save a bit of money - anything earlier than 2013 (also described as a 2.0TSI but a previous generation engine) is very likely to use a lot of oil....

Today's other test drive. This was the standard 4xe, not the more powerful Trailhawk.

The setup in this is different again. This is a 4wd with the electric motor driving the back wheels and the petrol driving the front. If the charge drops too low, the petrol engine works as a generator to keep the electric engine going and maintain 4wd at all times.... Read more

Here is an (IMO) alarming fact about the Jeep Renegade PHEV. Despite being quite a small car, it tips the scales at a scarcely believable 1770kg.

For some perspective, that is more than twice the weight of our Suzuki Ignis AGS (auto), it is heavier (by 25kg) than an entry level Tesla Model 3 60kWh (325bhp), and more than 100kg heavier that the Skoda Superb PHEV (not exactly lightweight and emphatically not a small car!). ...

My car got nicked so we're in the market for a new car but the choices are making it very difficult for me to choose.

We're looking at buying cash and have a maximum of 15k to spend and would ideally like a car with less than 40k miles on. We don't do a massive miles only around 2k a year and the old car was a 1l fiesta which was boring and slow to drive so I was looking for something fun to drive like a focus st or something along those lines but reality is I have a 1yo and my wife wants her in a rear facing seat for as long as possible and wants room in the front. We have 0 plans for more kids so with 15k is it possible to get the best of both worlds?... Read more

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll add that to the list and have a look at them when my wife's home I'd never seen them before so that's good.

When I was a kid, my dentist was opposite the Ginetta HQ. The ground floor was a showroom and frequently had my face pressed up against the glass. Closed in 1988 apparently.

Are trade plates used by car dealers etc used just for tax or are they relevant to insurance too?

In terms of what they prove, just that a fee has been paid to cover 'road tax'.

The vehicle's being insured and MoT'd relies on the holder of the plate complying with the terms and conditions of its issue.
