Hi

My wife’s car was subject to a Cat N write off 3 years ago. We bought the car back as salvage and replaced the bumper. Had it MOTd and have used it ever since with no probs.

The advice at the time about informing DVLA was very woolly. Insurers weren’t clear and said we didn’t need to send the log book anywhere. We stayed with the same insurer so they were already aware.

The car has just failed it’s MOT and it’s likely it will be scrapped, however it may be suitable for someone to fix up.

We still have the V5 but no indication it’s on a Cat N. And now I’m looking online where it appears that we should have informed the DVLA of the Cat N after all.

We want to do things right but just wanted some advice from anyone who has gone through this before. Are we liable for a £1000 fine if we re-sell the car even if we tell the new owner it is Cat N? Do we tell the DVLA now (3 years on) and would they endorse the V5 and give us a fine at the same time?

Many thanks

As I understand it, a Cat N doesn't require re-registration, so the V5 will not change. You do, though, need to tell the DVLA. I'm not aware of any particular timescale, so I suspect it won't be a problem. Either way, you need to do it, but I doubt you'll get a fine.

I’m a big You Tube viewer, from Hub Nut to Chops Garage to JayEmm. Unfortunately I view this on my I phone and am unsure on how to post links. If you search the above title from JayEmm he presents the whole argument for and against EVs. It’s 44mins long but he holds your attention throughout. Unfortunately the odd earwax removal add pops up periodically but ultimately I can’t argue with anything he says. I personally have no issue with EVs apart from the ludicrous cost, I currently choose to drive a 3yr old BMW 320i. Those of you who know me will be aware I’m a serial changer but certainly moved away from my once loved Italian marques. Anyway watch the above, it may or may not change your mind. If anyone finds it and is able to post a link please do.

BritishVolt want a payment of ~£30m on a £3.8bn project.

This is just 1%. If they cannot cope with a problem of this size, they are doomed from the start. Has all the makings of another John DeLorean shambles.

Hi guys,

I have recently had the clutch and master cylinder changed on my c30 and although it’s lovely and smooth to change gear on normal roads, if I drive on the motorway for a while, the clutch pedal drops and gears are rock hard and very difficult to change for a good couple of miles once I come off of the motorway.
After a while it goes back to normal and the clutch pedal comes up again… any thoughts?
Many thanks

All this wringing of hands an gnashing of teeth over the stopping of Fiesta production!

It's just a name that has been discontinued. So Ford bring out a new supermini in 2023 - they could always call it - now let me think - FIESTA!... Read more

How do the new crossover/SUV/pick up designs affect battery range if they are fully electric? Being heavier and less aerodynamic than traditional saloon/estates? We know that it makes a difference with ICE. Are electric motors affected as much?

They definitely are affected. By how much in relation to ICE vehicles would take a much bigger brain than mine to work out as there are so many variables!. ...

I've had quite a few autos, Merc and Volvo and it really is just put the car in drive and forget about it. Can't speak for any other makes.

Hi

I have a 2013 Ford Fiesta that I am thinking about part exchanging. At my last service the garage recommended replacing the timing belt for £350. Is it worth me doing this before getting rid of the car? Read more

If you were selling privately, then yes. If part-exing, probably not, because the allowance you will get will probably assume that the cambelt will not have been changed. Why would you trade in a car just after investing £350 in it ? :-)

The front outer edge of the tyres on my BMW 320d are wearing. All other tyres are in good condition. The front are also in good condition it's only the outer edge of them that has worn. I've heard that this might be caused by wheel alignment. BMW use KDS but can this be sorted using Hunter? Read more

4 wheel geometry check is probably a good idea on this car.

Earlier this month I got a letter advising me to renew my over 70 driving licence. It enclosed a return addressed envelope with a shouty message (bit like the USA's ubiquitous all upper case notices) in the top R hand corner 'PLEASE CHECKWEIGHT AND USE CORRECT POSTAGE'. So just a couple of days ago I went on line and completed the application form to renew it. Today it has arrived via Royal Mail. Well done DVLA!

But I would be interested in opinions about what to do about DVLA's command to cut up my old licence and return it. Do I - a) not bother, and just destroy and dispose of it myself - b) return it without incurring the expense of a stamp c) use a 19p stamp that has been lurking in the stamp drawer for possibly decades d) be a well behaved compliant citizen and comply. Use the 19p stamp plus buy another to make up the full rate before the old stamp can't be used anymore. End of Jan I think.

When the 'new' mini was first intorduced in the early 2000s, it was sold with a starting point at around the £10k mark. In that time other technological products have come down significantly in cost whilst similarly improving their green credentials and performance.

This EV only car will start at £30k (3x the cost for a car with half teh range at best, built in the home of modern communism and not the UK) - a car not for the masses but as a plaything for the uber-rich's little Johnny or Jilly as they pass their driving test.... Read more

I have bought a used car in june 2022 from a local trader who advertised in auto traders and also in his website. The car was category s and has 117000 miles on meter. I checked the mileage on car spec and later on government mot check and both showing 117000 on mot which was done in 28 April 2022.

Yesterday I went to a showroom to sell the car as my wife wants a small car. The trader checked my car and told me that there is mileage tempering in car. I requested for proof and he gave me an experian report which showing mileage by dvla on 25 April 2022 (3 days before mot) and it was 132000.... Read more

It seems really strange, given that mot history is public information.
