At the bottom end of the market (then) I'd speculate that a lot of the stuff had something badly wrong with it that the seller was hoping couldn't be spotted in the very limited inspection allowed, though in this case I wouldn't have spotted it anyway.

This is a local company to me but they also claim to be the largest in the UK. They offer the option of driving from a wheelchair or travelling in 1 as an upfront passenger. They also sell used (presumably Motability returns).

Different models have different ways of checking oil level . Some are done with warm running engine . Check instructions in the manual or the I drive service guide .

My mum has an original model Honda Jazz that she doesn't use very much but doesn't want to get rid of it and give up her independence.

As its not used very often, it often requires jump starting when she wants to go out. To get over this i want to fit a solar powered maintenance charger through the cigarette lighter but for this to be effective the lighter needs to remain live even with the ignition switched off. ... Read more

I'll check it out by trying to use the cigarette lighter with the ignition off when I'm next there.

I have had my current 2003 Ford Focus 1.6 auto since 2006 and I love it.

It is currently in the garage for a new in tank fuel pump and I have been thinking it is inevitable that one day something serious will go wrong and I will need a replacement.... Read more

I would keep the Ford if I was you.

So would I. The only reason our Focus with its Ford/Mazda bombproof maintenance free autobox and reliable Yamaha designed 1.6 Zetec engine became u/s at 21yrs old and 161,000 miles was because of encroaching sill rust, neglected during its last couple of years of son's ownership. It's now costing you nothing in depreciation, which would be a four figure annual sum if you went for a much newer car.

Hi all,
In need of urgent help with it being bank holiday and the garages been closed, any help is much appreciated.

I was driving my ‘14 plate Renault Clio yesterday to York, when I began to hear a faint whistling sound that sounded like it was coming from the front of the car. This whistling noise was only noticeable when I was accelerating, and began to get noticeably worse.

Not only was it whistling very loud when driving, but it seemed like a lot of power had gone from my car too, having to practically put my foot down to the floor to get to 20mph. After stopping, taking a quick look under the hood and then setting off back home, I managed to get home after practically having the foot to the ground to slowly get up to 40/50mph and then with occasional accelerating and hoping for no uphills etc.

Does anyone know what this may be if possible please? No garages are currently open for me to ask, just hoping it’s not a case of my car being knackered completely. Any help is much appreciated. The one thing I did realise when I checked under the hood was that the engine coolant tank seemed empty even though I had filled it up not long ago. When I unscrewed the cap, which seemed abnormally stiff/stuck, and the air pressure got in, all the fluid flooded back into the tank - not sure if this means anything too?

Any help is much appreciated! Read more

Whistling on hard acceleration with loss of power would be a result of an air leak in the hose from the turbo compressor to the inlet manifold. Check for those, get someone to rev the engine while holding a piece of paper around the turbo outlet hose (mind fingers in drive belts)

I miss my bikes too. I remember, before I took the test, riding a CG125 from Gloucester to Liverpool and having to go via one of the Mersey tunnels. That was a weird experience.

My father suffered a stroke last year, and we decided to make one of his very elderly, least-used cars SORN as it was unclear as to whether he would be able to drive again.

Happily, he has made a pretty good recovery and he would now like to use the car again, but the MOT has since lapsed and I’m therefore unsure as to what to do about the correct way to obtain a new one. Can I legally drive a SORN vehicle on the road, as long as it’s booked into an MOT test centre? Am I right in thinking that I can’t tax a vehicle that doesn’t have an MOT?... Read more

Chris Stanbury

The MOT test from last time should give you a reasonable guide regarding its likely success this time. A list of advisories last time might be fails by now especially corrosion.

Great idea - thanks.

Warning

I tried getting a quote from a low mileage company. They quote low fees of £200 per year and by the time you enter the details they quote you £676 for a journey of 2000 miles per year.

I get frustrated trying to get insurance quotes. It just seems they are harvesting data.... Read more

Annual mileage doesn't have a huge effect on premiums.

Driver profile, employment status, address and car type are far bigger factors in determining premium....
