Hi

Have done a search on the Forum and I see their have been quite a few issues with the DSG box. Up until now I haven't found any ,until yesterday, went to pull away from the lights the Car started to move then stopped. No amount of acceleration would move it forward or backward. Managed to get it pushed round the corner. The engine was running fine, and the gear selector was able to be moved along the slot. On the dash their their is a guide to which gear you are in all the letters were flashing. Called out the RAC all they could do was tow me home, not to far a distance. Chap took a look and said DSG nobody wants to mess with those gearboxes ??... Read more

Hi all,
Woke up this morning with a flat tire )nail right through it!)
My spare is 195/65 R15
My other 3 are 205/55/ R16

I live 50 miles from my tire garage.
Will I be alright to drive for a couple of days with one odd tire?

Thanks in advance. Read more

Its what VAG call a "temporary spare".

Our Fabia has 215 45 16 tyres on 16" alloy wheels....

You mention the rising cost of living and the worldwide semiconductor shortage, but there is a third factor making people hesitate about buying a new car. Uncertainty.

There is much work to be done on batteries, range and charging infrastructure before many of us will "go electric". One thing I have learned in 55 years car ownership is that it is never a good idea to be among the first to embrace new technology.

The so called 2030 deadline for the production of new petrol and diesel cars to end is not set in stone. It is at the whim of whatever government is in power in 2030.

If the "Partygate" scandal has taught us anything, it is that for those who make the rules there are no rules. Read more

I agree. Fools in government (of which there are many) will make foolish decisions.

I, for one, will not consider an electric car until the following are satisfied:

1. I can recharge from whatever to 400 miles in les than 5 minutes at a realistic price.
2. That the vehicle has a realistic range of at least 400 miles (that is a compromise as my vehicle, a BMW 330d, will do over 500 miles before needing refuelling).
3. That there is a properly range of recharging stations that can recharge a vehicle to the above specification at a realistic and sensible price.

At present, I feel that the public is doing research into EVs on behalf of the manufacturers at our expense.

Hi.

I'm very worried. I bought a car from a trader with a proper premesis in Lincolnshire on Saturday. After paying the money, he then decided to tell me that he had no V5 for the car as the last owner had not dropped it off. He said I could tax it by going to the post office with a V62 form to request a new V5. Today I went post office and it was rejected, so they told me to contact DVLA. DVLA told me that he should have given me V5 and that I would have to apply by post to have the car SORN first and then request a new V5 at a cost of £25. They also said I cannot drive the car and it must be SORN until I receive new paperwork which could take 6 weeks!!!!! I contacted the trader who apologised and said that he had received his new SORN form today even though he sold it to me on Saturday, he said he would contact the last owner today but I've heard nothing back, now he is ignoring me. What is he hiding?

I agree with the above. Don't be funny with the seller (even though he needs to brush up on procedures), just tell him you need a vehicle on the road.

I see that France has announced a decree that potentially bans patients suffering from Alzheimer’s from driving (presumably also affecting British holidaymakers!). The decree says ‘upon the onset of cognitive decline, and in particular pathological decline such as Alzheimer's or related diseases, there will be a total ban on driving’

While I have sympathy with the concern that patients who suffer from dementia shouldn’t be putting themselves and other road users at risk I can also anticipate this deterring those with early dementia from seeking medical attention … for fear that they will lose their access to mobility and if living in rural areas access to shops, medical facilities and even hairdressers and florists (so essential!).... "I agree with you that regular repeat driving tests for everyone are impractical - but don't agree they should just be imposed on older drivers"

A regular 5 -yearly theory test to retain your licence would be worthwhile to make sure that all drivers are aware of changing rules. Cheaper and is computer based....

Bit of a long one here goes…

I was in an accident about a month ago which was my fault and had to pay an excess of 1.4k. It’s a 2016 Citroen C3 and I purchased it for 7k off finance nearly new.
I wanted to sell my car after paying off finance and get something nicer but now I’m on the fence about selling as I feel I’ve put too much money into the car and it would not be worth selling at this point.
Opinions on this? I was also contemplating doing some modifications on it to make it look nicer but don’t know how well that would go seeing as it’s not the nicest shape and more of a family car - plus my insurance will probably be through the roof after me accident. What would you do? Read more

I'd definitely agree with that, if you can buy as new as you can afford, and look after it carefully, drive it sensibly, then it saves a lot in the long term.

Once the monthly payments are done make sure you put the same amount in the bank each month and use them towards any repairs you might have. You'd be surprised how much this will mount up to a good cash sum when you eventually have to replace the car.

Most of my cars have been bought nearly new and kept for a long time / high mileage. The cost of the occasional wheel bearing or shock absorber or even cambelt can be met from the savings and still have money left in the bank.

Don't count in routine servicing, brakes, tyres etc - you'd have to replace them regardless of whether you kept the car or bought nearly new, in due course.

My wife's Peugeot 206 was bought new in 2001 and lasted 19 years and 110,000 miles before succumbing to the 'corrosionvirus'. In that time we replaced the cambelt twice and two wheel bearings, apart from routine servicing.

I also has a Vectra from new as a company car which I bought from the leasing company at 3 years old. It was run for 12 years and 212,000 miles before I gave it to a family member. In that time it needed new wheel bearings & shock abosrbers which were less than what a typical monthly payment would have bene had I replaced the car.

My current Mazda 6 is now 10 years old and 172,000 miles and still got lots of life ahead, I hope!

I am looking to buy a used car, no older than 2019 plate and probably less than 10k miles and probably under £13k. I currently drive a Peugeot 207 which I've had 7 years but is starting to give me a lot of problems.

Any recommendations for which would be best? I drive around 10k a year. I don't know much about cars so would love to hear your views. Read more

Thanks for you reply, I hadn't considered a new car but will definitely have a look at these now

Anyone else disappointed with the 'expert' Sarah Tooze's reply to a user question about PowerShift issues? Surely everyone must know these gearboxes have a history of being troublesome!

Ford say they don't have a history of this being an issue and nor have any recalls been issued. Unfortunately, due to the age of the vehicle they are unable to help as the vehicle is out of warranty so this is an issue you will have to take up with the dealer you bought the car from. Read more

Re HJ getting a scoop, those days are long gone. HJ was a real person but left some time ago and the site is now owned by a company. They will not rock the boat by publicising an issue with a particular manufacturer. Fair enough, they are a business and need to maintain relationships with the manufacturers.

However the backroom itself is populated by a largely knowledgeable bunch and the site owners are to be commended on giving us a pretty free rein. But if you are looking for an active consumer champion site you need to look elsewhere.

Just to update

Spoke with the insurance yesterday, i made it clear that i was unhappy with the repair on the car and we have agreed to give the garage one last chance to get it right and she took all the details and they are going to contact the garage and if i am not happy, then the insurance company will send someone out to inspect the work....
