Can car be driven with break pads on the wrong way? And what issues could it cause? Shouldn’t break pads on ‘wrong way’ been picked up in dealer health check or MOT? Read more

I did wonder if the title for this thread was a query about accommodation for mini-breaks.

We have a Hyundai i10 that needs 2 new front tyres. It has done 28K miles, so I think they have lasted well. They are 185x55xR15 86H Continental EcoContis which it had on when new.

The rears have suffered however, and both have been replaced because of punctures. The local garage has fitted lower spec tyres, ie 82V instead of 86H, presumably because they are either cheaper or they had them in stock. SWMBO, whose car it is, has no problems with the 82Vs (they are Nexen branded) and just wants to go to the local garage and get the same for the front.... Read more

The manufacturer contracts for relatively large volumes of tyre so doesn't need to over-specify but the replacement trade often finds it easier/cheaper just to stock the faster tyre as that can be fitted to all models.

When I had Cavaliers and Astras, they only needed H-rated tyres but the V-rated were usually cheaper - and no reason not to fit them.

Hi,
Mentioned this thread to a friend who stated his son at uni in Liverpool changed his policy to 3rd party fire and theft and it went down dramatically

He was in a student house in Kensington area near the city centre, not sure on the post code.

He thinks it is vandalism which is the main cause for claims, if you go 3rd party this risk to the insurance company is removed.

Hi All,

2 colleagues had Subaru's and you are right about the cost to fix and service, eyewatering on a good day. Problem was neither cars were reliable. Brakes were an annual replacement job (they only did small mileages) and the rear diffs must have been made of cheese.

I bought a 8,000 mile eight month old 2.0R Legacy estate in 2007 and ran it for three years / 50,000 miles. I had the clutch replaced under Subaru warranty within a month of buying it, otherwise it had zero faults in that time. However, it did need new front pads at less than 25,000 miles and all my previous and subsequent vehicles have never needed pads before 70,000 miles. Maybe it was en ex-demonstrator?

I suspect many new cars sold already have some form of GPS tacking installed, probably often associated with built in sat-nav or other systems.

It is entirely plausible this will be used to generate charging data. It may even give a real time read-out of costs accumulated and allow selection of a route based on lowest charge for the time of travel - just as one can currently set fastest, shortest, most economical routing....

I think most people buying an expensive EV could afford the same road tax as those driving ICE. The gov has all it policies on EV totally wrong and is trying to penalise those who cannot afford or will not go EV. The charging network is still a joke for EVs and is still non existent in rural locations. Sooner or later the Gov is going to have to tax EVs instead of giving money away to these. It will soon be cheaper to sit in your EV with the battery charged than to sit at home freezing to death

I'm considering buying a 2 - 4 year old small car and want to set up one search to locate all models for sale within a specific distance. When I bought my current car, a Toyota Yaris in 2010 I was able to locate desired cars easily in one search by ticking multiple boxes for each model and colour. I haven't used any car websites since then and thought I had used Autotrader back then but looking at that site today there does not seem to be a way of setting up a search for more than one model.

I like the higher driving position of the 1.33 Yaris and my only complaint is that it's not fast enough on motorways but as most of my driving is in the city it's not a great problem. It may have saved me getting speeding points. Should I add other small cars to my list.... Read more

Why not add the Suzuki swift to your list? All are peppy things to drive. Don't forget some engines are naturally free revving and feel more zippy than others, whereas in fact, performance may be similar. The fiesta 1.25 Yamaha engine is one such very revvy and pleasant motor. If you don't like using the gears, best consider a small petrol turbo perhaps, like the 1.0 TSI vag unit or the swift 1.0 boosterjet. Otherwise your list is full of decent cars!
