A few weeks ago my Mini went Into limp mode, code reader shows P1057 and P1062 which suggests a valve timing problem. Took it to my usual garage who couldn't find the cause but cleared the fault codes, and topped up the oil. It ran fine for the next 80 miles or so then it went into limp mode again with the same fault codes. Took it to and independent Mini specialist who cleared the fault codes and couldn't get the error to recur, he cleaned up something called a vanos unit. After another 70 miles it was back in limp mode with the same codes.
I thought that fault codes indicate exactly what is wrong, but maybe that's my misunderstanding ! If there's no alternative then I may take it to a Mini dealership to see if they can fix it, but that might end up costing more than the car is worth!... Read more
My son has just bought a used 2004 fiesta. The stereo requires a code but the car didn't come with a manual or code information.
The serial number is M674544.... Read more
Thanks for coming back. I assume the code is correct.
Hello everyone, I’m new on here.
I’m seeking for help from experienced users:)
Two weeks ago I took a lovely car on finance after struggling with my current vehicle. Car was purchased from a dealer, on warranty - I informed them that I would put car through detailed inspection as didn’t wan’t to purchase a faulty car.
Picked car up on Thursday, on Tuesday sent off to two garages , both of them confirmed that car has been remapped and DPF has been removed , also minor suspension issues.
I called the dealer, they picked up my car, left courtesy vehicle reassuring me that on policy provided by them I can still do my job - delivery driver.
When I called insurer they declined. I was informed that I shouldn’t be driving courtesy car as policy only covers purchased car on drive away(5 days).
For about a week dealers garage didn’t do anything with my car, I’m meant to call them on Monday in regards to find out whether they would fix the car or find different solution.
The thing is that I would expect them to work more promptly as car was road unworthy - illegal to drive ( I know some drivers remove DPF, but I purchased car with thought of selling it in the future , in factory’s settings, not modified).
What could be my options ? What are the chances that garage will fix vehicle for me ? I can’t have another week not working. I am left without vehicle, with finance on it and can’t actually make money as car was faulty.
Thank you for any advice:) Read more
If no emissions warning light is illuminated despite the missing DPF then it has been mapped out.
Around Christmas, I had some work done by a garage on my boot as I couldn’t open it. They stripped it, cause was water damage to the Micro SD card. At the same time they had to replace the catch. Also asked them to check the seal by the wiper blade, as I could not see one. In fact on this particular model the seal is on the inside. It was split, so replaced. That was probably one of the routes in for water. Anyway it’s been working perfectly until yesterday. Now I’m a bit apprehensive in taking it back, probably the same problem. I washed my car at home, I wonder if water is getting in via window. With labour and parts it cost me £350.
Please can someone advise.
Thank you. Read more
You got a good outcome in the end and £100 isn't bad with labour rates what they are. Thanks for updating the thread, it could be useful to others.
I read somewhere (possibly in the increasingly useless Saturday Telegraph motoring section) that certain cars are starting to represent good value second hand, whether it's because they are thirsty, have an "un-green" image or unfashionable badge, or some kind of undeserved reputation.
I've even seen the Porsche Cayenne put forward for its bullet proof engine? (Don't laugh please, I am actually tempted)... Read more
never thought of an A8 - very interesting
I'd go for petrol myself, James Ruppert has issued dire warnings over the big diesels (I forget what they were exactly)
Apologies for asking what may seem a trivial question but it would mean a lot to me to have the original radio working again. We have spent a lot of time and effort restoring an MR2 MK2 to a lovely condition. It has the original radio and CD player in place and it needs a code to reset it. We've looked through all the documentation, asked on the owners forums and even asked the local dealer and there doesn't seem to be a way to reboot it. The answers range from get a new head unit to "wow, that car is older than me". Does anyone here know if it is possible to find a code or reactivate it in some way? It really would be great finishing touch to what is a lovely car. Many thanks. Read more
Thank you for your advice. I have just been told the code is a three digit number that is the same as the style code on the inside front page of the owner's handbook. Whether that is the case for all Toyota radios I can't say but it worked in my case. Thank you again.
Doing a bit of reading on the above car, and it’ll have a steering ration of 12:1, which means the ability to go from full lock to full lock without letting go with either hand.
Would that mean current push/pull shufflers of the wheel, BSM style, would change to crossing their arms to get full lock? Read more
One at 5, one on the passenger seat (assuming there’s no one in it, obviously….).
Hi. When I try to display my radio serial number to get an unlock code it never shows the radio model. None are a letter and 6 numbers.

The radio needs to come out to get the serial number . Drop the glove box out and try to give the radio a gentle push from behind while the removal keys are in place . May need a bit of jiggering
Can car be driven with break pads on the wrong way? And what issues could it cause? Shouldn’t break pads on ‘wrong way’ been picked up in dealer health check or MOT? Read more
I did wonder if the title for this thread was a query about accommodation for mini-breaks.
We have a Hyundai i10 that needs 2 new front tyres. It has done 28K miles, so I think they have lasted well. They are 185x55xR15 86H Continental EcoContis which it had on when new.
The rears have suffered however, and both have been replaced because of punctures. The local garage has fitted lower spec tyres, ie 82V instead of 86H, presumably because they are either cheaper or they had them in stock. SWMBO, whose car it is, has no problems with the 82Vs (they are Nexen branded) and just wants to go to the local garage and get the same for the front.... Read more
The manufacturer contracts for relatively large volumes of tyre so doesn't need to over-specify but the replacement trade often finds it easier/cheaper just to stock the faster tyre as that can be fitted to all models.
When I had Cavaliers and Astras, they only needed H-rated tyres but the V-rated were usually cheaper - and no reason not to fit them.
Clearing the codes resets the system and allows the engine to relearn the drive cycle . However, after increasing miles , the parameters go out sync and the fail light will illuminate. It’s probably using oil , another issue with these engines.
