Just got an MOT fail for;

Repair immediately (major defects):
  • Nearside Front Suspension arm pin or bush excessively worn rear bush (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Offside Front Suspension arm pin or bush excessively worn rear bush (5.3.4 (a) (i))

They charged £360 for a retest and 2 new complete suspension arms. Am I old fashioned but we used to press bushes out and replace. A quick look at FleaBay shows aftermarket bushes a plenty for a few quid each. Read more

I've suffered this MOT obsession with failing cars on "deteriorated rubber bushes" before, when the inspector is looking just at the surface coating of the rubber which cracks with age, the body of the bush being perfectly ok when you remove the old one.

It's the usual makey workey - makey money scheme when the MOT station also carries out repairs....

My daughter wants to replace her elderly Jazz Mk1 and I’ve come across a high mileage Jazz IMA which I’m considering. Normally I’d run a mile from a. a very high mileage car and b.a driving instructor’s car. However- this is a 65 plate and has FSH serviced by Honda every 12, 500 miles and CVT fluid changed as per schedule and it’s not a pool driving school car, he’s a one man band and the car is apparently immaculate. He bought it at 18 months old with 3,000miles on the clock, he’s does 40k a year in it ( prior to Covid ) and it now has 136,000 miles

Her next car must be reliable above all. Could this be a good reliable car? Any ideas what the car is worth as a private sale would be appreciated, I don’t know how to value this. What would the trade value be?... Read more

>>it seems Honda do load the prices somewhat.

The MoT had advisory on my CRV for anti-roll bar bushes....

Warning

In terms of Lockdown, we are in the "Stay Home".

Whilst, I not in a hurry to update my car, but I am on the look out for a new car. If I happen to see one which meets my price and requirements. How far can I travel under current regulations?

If you're not in a hurry, I would suggest waiting until the restrictions lift to a degree where such travel is permitted - for your own safety as much as anyone else's. With a fair wind it could be just another month or two.

Hi I currently own a golf mk 4 automatic 1.6 I’ve had it for 4 years but want to upgrade I have a budget of 5k I need some advice I am after an automatic but don’t know if the dsg gearbox is reliable or not can anyone recommend if I should go for a mk5 or mk6 ? It needs to be 5 door as I have a young family and my wife has a automatic licence so she will drive it as well safety is a must but I’d like it to look good as well also we don’t do motorway driving it’s mostly town driving but is diesel still a good option or should I strictly look at petrol engines? Thanks in advance Read more

Tell us roughly where you live and we’ll take a look at worthy options nearby. It’s all very well making recommendations but if none are available then you can’t buy one. I would however rule out anything with an automated manual box such as VW’s DSG or Fords Powershift as they’re appallingly unreliable and cripplingly expensive to repair/replace.

Ellesmere Port union reps, government and PSA in negotiations regarding its future.

Announcement expected this week.

Rumours are -

PSA demand ‘major’ subsidies including interest free loan for new investment and tax holiday
PSA also demand further staff T&C concessions
Govt minister now involved in talks
PSA want current Astra to end by ‘late 2021’

Union come up with numerous ideas during talks including a 3 year extension of current assembly line to re-birth the Astra van
Union also offered more concessions regarding over time and holiday entitlement
Uk govt have offered some support with more once PSA investment is confirmed

Worth mentioning as a factory, Ellesmere Port is one of the most efficient in Europe & has a lower cost base of over 20% per unit (car) when compared to PSA equivalent Sochaux factory where the 308 is made (this detail was in a PSA internal document the union have a copy off).

Union not confident PSA is serious about new investment and have made unrealistic demands of UK govt.

Well, I could mirror your mantra right back at you, with something like

“Don’t you think if Waxoyl (or Fluid Film which seems to be the US equivalent) was superior to linseed oil, aircraft manufacturers would use it?”...

My son is looking for a cheap car and a family friend has offered an 'abandoned' 2005 Mitsubishi Colt 1.1 with 80k on the clock. The car would be almost free but I am worried it could cost more to recommission than its worth.

The main issue is that it was last MoT'd in Dec. 2019 and has been sat, outside, unused since March 2020. The current owner has had the car for about 7 years, serviced it annually and had no trouble with it. It passed the last MoT without a problem and has only done 1000 miles since then.... Read more

Little bit of an update...

This morning went to see this 2005 Mitsubishi Colt that's been standing more than a year. Battery was totally flat. Tyres a bit low but not flat...Moss growing on the wipers....

Hello, I am thinking of cha going the pads of my car as the pagid pads I have are a bit crap tbh. I have also got pagid discs and have probably done around 5k miles on them. They look pretty much brand new and have no abnormal wear or vibration issues or anything.

Would I be alright to put new mintex m1144 pads on those discs? Would I run into any issues?... Read more
