Hi all, I’m new to the forum but have been struggling for a while with a decision on a used car. I’m looking for an executive saloon, low mileage, 5 series size or equivalent for around the £17k mark.
I’m struggling with reconciling the differences between the 520d SE, E220d SE + or the A6.
I’m looking for good practicality, good performance, good consumption, and a good spec but given these cars aren’t the newest of specs I’m finding it hard to decide which model is the better and in what spec.
Was hoping those of you who have one or more of these could point me in the right direction and also if there’s any optional extras you would look out for.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate your help. Read more
When I learned to drive. I was taught MSM. Mirror Signal Manoeuvre.
So if I am changing lanes to the right. I see my mirror, signal and then try to change lanes to the right. As soon as I signal, I will notice the driver on the right hand lane, will instead, of going at the same speed, will try to put the gas pedal down and accelerate, to close the gap, so that I can't get into that space. ... My grandfather was a volunteer ambulance driver in WW2 alongside his day job as a Procurator Fiscal, so he saw a good deal of the consequences of driver error.
Most road accidents during WW2 were caused by the black out and not many private vehicles about because of fuel rationing. The fatality rate was about 8 times todays rate in 1945 and that had doubled from the pre-war rate.
I own a m/y 2010 5 Series Touring.

Springs break on all brands. Just take a walk and look in the gutter, enough scrap to keep the Romanians happy for weeks.
Spot on! I am frequently removing bits of spring from the roads near me. A real tyre wrecker should you hit one...
My car is in for work and they have loaned me an A250e 70 reg. Newbury to Basingstoke on electric power and very comfortable, good handling and performance. If you wanted one it would set you back £36k...out of my league...there are so many features on the displays it would take me a long time to come to grips with them.First car I had was a Viva HB with a speedo, fuel/temp gauge and not much else. Wind the windows down yourself and any other fancy stuff you needed like a clock you bought and stuck it in. Happy days. Cost me £400. Read more
A 'jointly' developed engine between Renault and MB from their previous partnership. A friend who is an MB head tech isn't overly impressed with them, having now seen several which have failed at the big end bearing....
My mate has a water leak from a 2 inch grommet entering his car. The grommet is a blank and too difficult for him to get at as it is behind the engine. Water is coming down a windscreen drain accumulating behind the grommet and leaking into the footwell He can get at the grommet from the inside and wants to seal it here PLASTIC to METAL body of the car
What would be the best sealant to use? The grommet is out of view and he does not mind "burying" the thing with sealant if it does the job Read more
ive used windscreen sealant and it worked. also suggesst waterproof tape
Evening all, I’m in 2nd interview stage for a job located 25 miles away, we’re currently a 1 car family (mondeo 2009 1.8 diesel) and my wife uses this for work a couple of miles away, so I’m looking at the possibility of a 2nd hand electric as we have a car port on the side of our garage. This is very much thinking out of the box as my normal option would be a tidy bangernomics small runabout for her short run to work and I use the mondeo for the longer run Read more
47 miles on a full charge for a Zoe doesn't seem right. There must be something wrong with it (the battery particularly)
Our neighbours opposite had a Zoe, they were very pleased with it but the renewal lease at the end of the three-year period wasn't anything like as attractive as some of the 'sweeteners' had been removed. So they went back to a small petrol car.
Last November when car had a 12 month service at a Peugeot garage I raised an issue the radio switched itself off after a few minutes when the engine was switched off with a message on the touchscreen “going into economy mode”. The garage reported the battery was at fault and recommended a new battery which I had fitted a few days later at a cost of £280. Last week was the first time I had the radio on with the engine switched off and noticed after approx 5 minutes the radio switched itself off with the message “going into economy mode” on the touchscreen. Could you please advise if the radio is supposed to switch off after a few minutes with the engine off to conserve the battery charge. Read more
My 208 does this and as its not driven much its more noticeable and annoying . Cant even open windows without starting the engine
Something seems to drain the battery when not in use ( possibly bluetooth, locations service. updating of software or other nonsense neither the car nor myself need) Not progress...
My son has his eye on one of these .

On the good and bad section of HJ, it says the type rating depends on the suspension specification. If it has the 'comfort' suspension, it is classed as a car not a commercial vehicle.

Hi. My diesel 2012 X-Trail struggles to start, but only ever on the first time I use it every day. The battery seems strong and will turn the engine over for a minute or more.
The problem exists at all temperatures but gets worse the cooler it gets. Yesterday was -4c and I had to bump start it off the drive, which is the first time that's happened.... Read more
