Yesterday, whilst legally parked for about 15 minutes in an open air shopping centre car park, my front wing got damaged by what is obviously another car scraping it. It would have been extremely unlikely that the other driver was oblivious to this, judging from the extent of the damage. They didn't stop nor leave a note with their details. I reckon the repair cost will be around £1,000. I will enquire with the retail park management whether they have any CCTV that would identify the registration number. I'm not hopeful, but if there is clear evidence and a clear reg. no. then is this a criminal offence that I should ask the Police to prosecute (not stopping after an accident....). If they did prosecute, would the small matter of my repair cost be recovered? Or would I have to pursue the keeper of the car for recompense whether or not the Police brought a criminal prosecution? If the Police did not pursue a criminal prosecution, then am I able to ask them to identify the keeper? Read more
I recently bought a Mazda 2 1.3 Tamura 2011. It's a really good car for what it is. I've owned a really good MX5 NC 2.0 Sport in the past which was fantastic, apart from it's slightly soft suspension.
I've read reviews about the Mazda 2, and this car isn't really the great handling car that they suggest. It's done 59,000 miles and is pretty good. The only thing I don't like about it is how much it bobs around at the front. Pushing the car down at it's corners, it is much stiffer at the rear, but the front is pretty easy to push down at both corners. I'm thinking of replacing the front dampers at it looks like a really simple job. I've never driven another Mazda 2 before, and just wondered if they were so soft at the front. I understand it's similar to a Fiesta of a similar year, but having owned Focus's before I can't imagine it would be as soft as this thing is.... Read more
If you've ever seen the episode of Grand Tour where Richard Hammond damages an ND in a desert sequence, that's the exact car that I used a few weeks previously to launch the car to the dealer network. I suspect it was crushed after Grand Tour finished with it.
bought a car a few weeks ago and have noticed
that each time I press the clutch, it can go further
than it’s supposed to and hits a metal plate. Whilst
it is touching the meta plate, if I turn my steering
wheel, I can feel something grinding against the
metal plate (a ball like grinding). Not sure if it’s
related but the steering pulls massively to the left
and I had the wheels aligned which hasn’t fixed the
problem. It’s a Hyundai i10. Would appreciate any
thoughts as to what it could be before I take it to a
mechanic . Read more

Looking for petrol cars like Astras and Focuses etc and there a a few of these around in budget. Look good, sliding doors, basic engine, extra 2 seats in the back in case of 3rd child ever.......
Seems to have been popular as there are no 2 liter engines around. So, 116 hp. Reminds me of my dad and a 1.6 liter Ford Sierra, packed full and towing a boat driving up to the Highlands of Scotland! I once had a 1.4 liter Astra as a hire car and felt it was ok.... Read more
Had a 1.8 petrol Mazda 5 for 11 years and it was a great car for us. Despite teaching the kids to be careful opening doors in a car park, they might forget or the wind catch the door - the sliding doors on the 5 were one less thing to worry about. Not the most refined at motorway speeds (although I think later versions had better soundproofing), but it was practical and I liked the sliding and reclining middle seats to adjust boot space or rear legroom. The final row seats were used occasionally over the years - bit tight, but they did the job and folded away neatly.
The only issues we had over 130,000miles were leaking front struts and worn front suspension bushes, but it was well looked after and regularly serviced. Other than that it didn’t put a foot wrong, although a neighbour’s son had a diesel one and had several engine problems before he got rid. For the relatively compact exterior size, the inside space was great and cleverly packaged. As badbusdriver said, a lot will depend on how it’s been looked after, but if you can find a good one it’s definitely worth considering.

Apparently the recovery services are receiving a surge in calls from owners of EVs running out of juice.
The AA have rescued more than 600 EVs in two years.... Read more
And at this time of year, with heaters, heated screens, rear windows, wipers and the like, I'll not be buying an EV anytime soon to watch the mileage levels drop like a stone.
Yes there may be benefits for some, but the style of driving of many motorists makes an EV unpractible. At the weekend I was in remote parts of Yorkshire for work, and there's few if any public chargers - and mobile signals are poor, so summon a rescue? Ha!...

You may be able to get the unit to show the serial number if you switch it on and press buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously. If no joy, try 2 and 6.
If you're successful, the display should show a serial number in the format M followed by six digits, or possibly V followed by six digits....
I have owned my Toyota Avensis 1.8 petrol auto from when I bought it new from Toyota Bristol south in 2008.
It has always been regularly serviced. First by Toyota and then after a few years by a local garage just across the road from me. Never had any problems with the car until this month, only new battery and brake parts such as pads, discs and pipes to the back..... Read more
I am the original poster. Had to register with a slightly different name because I forgot my password.
Anyway, the car is better. Turned out that the garage thought it needed 0W20 oil whereas it should have 10W30. On Thursday they re-filled it with the correct oil and the cold tapping is gone. Strange, because they serviced it the last couple of years and used the correct oil those times....
Many thanks everyone for your responses. I'm still chasing Savills for possible CCTV coverage, they won't be able to let me know for another few days.
