I'm not sure whether this issue specifically pertains to my gen-1 Mazda3 (or my car specifically), 'older' cars that don't have all the fancy electronics or hybrid systems current ones do, but I'd thought I'd ask this anyway:
My car tends to go through batteries in about 4-5 years. About average for a car, however, I wondered if this could be stretched by some means other than taking it out for a spin more often.... Read more
4-5 years is a pretty good term on a battery. Don’t think you are going to do much to improve that .I find this surprising. Is there much more electrical drain on modern cars ? I have only owned one 21st-century car (the present 2008 Pug) and I can't remember when any car last needed a new battery (tho as I have said, I am waiting for this 12-year-old one to give up). It must be about 30 years. Am I just lucky ?
UPDATE - my 207's battery started showing signs of real struggle, so I bit the bullet and put it out of its misery today. 12½ years and very nearly 80K miles starting a diesel engine, so I reckon it's done pretty well. 85 quid all-in at the local garage less than 10 mins walk away.
Just noticed this.
Hasn''t been driven since I had the wheels off last week. About 4 inches higher.... Read more
You could try jacking it up on suspension rather than jacking point and see if that jolts the shock back to normal, the weight of the car might be enough to do it, just a thought and might work? ...

I’m in the process of separating my engine and gearbox to investigate an oil leak, which I suspect to be from the crankshaft oil seal.
I’m almost ready to undo the N/S engine mount and begin dropping the engine/box but can’t remove the N/S inner driveshaft from the box. I’ve removed the outer driveshaft between the inner and outer CV joints but cannot remove the female half of the inner tripode type CV joint from the box. I’ve removed the O/S driveshaft but it’s not possible to drift the N/S driveshaft out from the other side, as there’s something between them in the way.... Read more

Hello forum,
Just bought a 2004 XTRAIL and have found rust in the interior wheel arch at the bottom of the nearside rear suspension turret. Is this fixable? Worth fixing? Estimated cost?... Read more
If you get it repaired, spray it with something afterwards, otherwise you'll be repairing the repair in a season or two.
My experience of MOT welding is very limited and a while ago, but based on it, I'd say they are likely to do very minimal or no rust prevention afterward....
In my locality, the council have pedestrianised the high street and removed 12 disabled parking bays. The only saving grace is that the parking is free for blue badge holders but all the other local towns now charge, so it won't be long until we suffer a shortage of disabled spaces and to pay for it!

Please could somebody tell me what LAW applies to advertising a disability via a Blue Badge in supermarket car parks???
South Yorkshire, late 70s, Early 80s had a fantastic subsidised bus service until Thatcher messed it up. Buses were well occupied and ran because they were carrying people. Everyone contributed through local taxes. Now, even before the pandemic, buses run empty. The private companies aren’t that bothered because the government still pays! What a total mess the Tories have made of this country… Read more
Small guided driverless electric or hydrogen fuel cell pods centrally controlled. They could join up to form a train if and when needed. The small compartments allow for COVID/other disease safe transport. The vulnerable could register and travel alone or in bubbles.

There does not seem too much in there which will affect most motoring offences. Some of the provisions are already contained within the Magistrates' Court Act.
