I have automatic headlights on my car so never normally have to make any adjustments with them, but the other night I went out in my car at night time and noticed the headlights weren't working at all, only the sidelights were working. The headlights were switched to automatic, I then changed them to the "On" position, but that made no difference. The strange bit is that if I switched the headlights to the "Off" position the headlights turned on.
Does anyone have any suggestions what could be causing the issue?... Read more
While tidying up the fallen leaves on our forecourt this afternoon SWMBO asked me 'what's this piece of greasy metal?'. I had an idea what it might be, but first thoughts were that it might be from a visiting vehicle. Not my 306, which hasn't been out for a couple of weeks. Got out a piece of carpet to lie on, torch and mirror, located the culprit straight away - broken 8cm-diameter retaining clip from the outer CV boot on the 207. Booked in for Monday, the boot itself looks OK at a glance.
If SWMBO had just tossed it in the bin, nothing might have been done until MoT next April .... Read more
I don't think so, as there isn't much clearance for rotation inside the hub carrier. Plus I'm not sure how long grease may have been escaping before the factory-installed ring was dislodged, so it will need repacking. I shall have the wheel off today for a better look.
UPDATE - I've had a proper look: some grease is spattered inside the alloys, which I have removed, and there is more in the immediate vicinity of the CV joint, so I guess it may be a week or two since the clip failed. Gaiter looks good, and a large cable-tie (I have some) might well fit, but as repacking is needed I'll let those with proper equipment do it. Won't cost the earth, or even a small continent....
Hello, the rear shock absorbers on my Golf make a popping sound at slow speeds. They appear to be doing their job ok, but I was just wondering if anyone else has the same problem. Regardless of it's current mileage, it has always done this.

Followed a car this afternoon and its rear nearside was bouncing all over the place. Can't they feel it inside? Vauxhall I think.
A little footnote today that the bailout requested by TFL will only be given if the Charging zone is extended. And there is a "threat" to cancel all transport services if Citizen Khan does't get his bailout.
Think we'll be giving it a miss again.. PERMANENTLY! Read more
How petty and hypocritical.
Really? It's petty to point out that the threat extend the Congestion Charge has been averted? ...

For discs, shocks and CV boot to need replacing at c.50,000 miles is unacceptable. I naturally will be comparing our newly acquired 2008 SUV to our old Focus estate which at nearly 20yrs old and 150,000 miles has original shocks, boots and suspension bushes. The front discs last c. 100,000 miles and rear drums are original, only recently needing new shoes.
I'm fortunate enough to have a company car as part of my remuneration package. I chose to replace my existing car with a VW Passat GTE Advance back in February. An estimated delivery date of mid May was given.
Then Covid 19 struck and VW shut down production for around 5 weeks in mid March.... Read more
The production line was closed fo 5 weeks but it does not just start up again - and there is a knock on effect with supply of parts as well as all the delays in taking the cars from the facory to the ports and onwards to the different countries. And then on top of that VW may be prioritising certain cars over others.
I will soon be moving to the Netherlands and will be required to swap my UK driving license for an EU one. Does this make my UK license null and void? I still want to maintain a presence in the UK, and will keep a car there. Will I be able to drive in the UK and insure the car on an EU license? Can I have both a UK and an EU license?
I think you're right. I checked the DVLA web site and you can only voluntarily surrender your license for age or medical reasons. So if I can't do it myself, and the Dutch can't do it, then I should keep the entitlement. I don't believe the EU can stop anyone having a non-EU license as well as an EU license, so it should work out OK when we fall off that cliff.
Replacement license application, for the physical thing, on its way......

Hi all. First time user. I purchased a used vehicle from a garage on 5th July 2020. On driving the car home I noticed the drivers mirror was moving around and had come away from the fixing, also no gas in air con.
On arriving home I emailed the garage and added a video of mirror and also about no air con gas. I was told to get air con regassed and they would send me the money. On getting re gas the garage said the condenser unit was corroded and would need replacing as it was going to keep losing, rang garage and they said to get a quote and they would pay.... Read more
