Government guidance They make it sound like a request but isn't it law? Read more
Around this time of year someone usually brings up an argument that we should use BST (British Summer Time) all year round.
Geography means that at locations further West than Greenwich, sunrise and sunset are later than GMT (Greenwich Men Time) and locations further North have shorter hours of daylight in winter.... Read more
We did a job in Shetland a few years ago in July and I was there for a week or so. It was really weird trying to sleep in daylight, Even at 3am it was only dusk! Couldn't cope with that.
We've holidayed on the Western Isles on a regular basis since the eighties. The quality of the light, even on an off day, is fantastic. ...
12 mm Allen key with two steel tube extensions gets aftermarket wheel nuts off without quite breaking, though it felt pretty close.
The studs have white stuff l(ooks like paint or TIPPEX) on the portion of thread not covered by the nuts. THINK I've seem something similar on you tube videos.... Read more
I'd assume the stud tension took up any movement. The sheet must be pretty thin and the bearing surface is rather large.I remember being told never to paint the back surface of steel wheels because the paint could compress, resulting in the the wheel coming loose. I'd reckon a coat of paint is thinner than a sheet of polythene.
Ah, So. That must be why alloy wheels took over....
Hi, I am doing a lot of miles with work atm and bought a mk4 golf last week for my 'work car'. I have not been driving the car yet as I am waiting until the start of next month for insurance/tax etc
Yesterday I moved it into my garage and noticed when I took it out again there was a patch of fluid on the floor. Today I noticed a lot more fluid on my drive and checked the reservoir which was practically empty! I then checked all power steering lines but they appear to have no leaks. I have checked both steering boots, the drivers side appears to be quite dry but the passenger side, when lifted up some fluid leaked out?... Read more
can anyone advise if they are reliable and how expensive to repair. exploring a more luxurious saloon to replace my Ford mondeo which broke frequently and wondering if this could be good for around 15 to 20k miles a year and likely to run from about 40k to 150k ish. also looking at mazda 6..dont like avensis and passat ok ish Read more
I’d be tempted by a petrol XF myself
I’ve been running a XF 25t Auto (2.0 I4 247bhp petrol) from new for the last 18 months, covering almost 12k miles in that period and hasn’t missed a beat. It’s quiet, wafts the car along nicely (a really excellent 8 speed ZF TC gearbox) and really goes when you want it to. Average MPG is low to mid 30’s so the OP will be frequenting the fuel station on a regular basis....
As part of a master’s in engineering, I am looking into the possible redesign of roof boxes. It would be a real help if you could answer any of these questions for me.
1) Why did you buy a roof-box in the first place?
2) What qualities were important for you in selecting that roof-box?
3) What items did/do you store in the roof-box when in use?
4) How often did/do you use the roof-box?
5) Where did/do you store the roof-box when not in use?
6) Do you interact with the Roof-box (have a use for it) when it is not on the roof of your car?
7) Do you find putting the roof box on the car can be a hassle?
Thanks very much for your help Read more
We bought a Kamei roofbox some years ago when we were camping with teenage children and a Renault Laguna.
We used it to put camping gear in, mostly long things like wind-breaks and lighter bulky stuff like bedding....
Hi,
Does anybody have the facility to track down a radio code for my aged Astras CDR500 for free?... Read more
Okay. Thanks for letting me know.
I've just purchased a harness adaptor and basic radio from flea bay. Cheaper than getting a code from Vauxhall, and at least I know my new radio will work unlike the existing unproven unit.
Hi guys,
Just bought a Civic from 2009, good runner.
Most of the electrics are fine apart from the dreaded fuse 36 circuit. That controls the electric mirrors and also the climate controls and rear demister.
Problem is that one of the mirrors was shattered which looks to have damaged the whole circuit. I tried replacing the fuse but it just blew again.
I don’t care about the mirror controls but the other stuff would be useful. (There is some heating, just not the blowers etc that you need the controls for).
I am guessing there will be a short circuit in the mirrors.
Is it possible to just cut out the mirrors from the electrical circuit and just get the other stuff working? Or maybe better to get a working mirror (plus wires) from a scrapyard?
Cheers

In that case it will have a small auxiliary electric heating element that slides into the heater box. Not sure which side of the lower dash you need for access . Looks like a large plug connector with about 7 wires attached .Thanks, apparently I need to remove the entire fascia. Think it would be less work for me just to use my cup of hot water every morning!
How could I sell my 160000 mile bluefin chipped Golf with loads of nearly new parts inc oem turbo calipers springs shocks etc. never failed MOT. 50mpg+ goes like stink except there's no stink as it doesn't smoke. i can't be in the car when test driven eother as driver or passenger. :-( I'm guessing We Fleece Any Owner, auction or trade in would be pence not pounds. Maybe some young buck would want to customise it? Just a shame to throw it away Read more
Yes where I live the boy racer types moved onto older VW TDi engined Passats, Golfs, Leons and Fabias with the usual silliness of darkened headlamps, lowered suspension, screeching noise from turbocharger when changing gear, and bigger exhausts; it would appear that the more black smoke emitted, the better... though presumably they alter the chipping before MoT time assuming they last the year the way the engines are treated.
Mostly they prefer 1.9PD, but I have seen 2.0TDi ones as well. So there definitely is a demand; I think the VW forum/website as badbusdriver is the way to go....

To tidy this one up:
Our usual Citroen garage, Perrys in MK couldn't fit us in until 9 November and in the end I went to the local French Car Specialist. I've used him over many years and been satisfied but after an issue where a well known problem with valve clearances on an XUD derived unit was diagnosed as a possible cracked head I lost faith. Needs must etc. ...
