I have just read Andrew English's review of the Volvo XC40 in today's Daily Telegraph. He commented on a measurement I am unused to - Efficiency.

There is a video on youtube by James May which is informative. He has a Toyota Miirai Hydrogen and a Tesla EV which he has on long term to equate the two technologies in real terms.. Well worth a look and May is as entertaining as usual!

60k on clock, bought less than a year ago. Local VW dealer says dsg clutch pack required (juddering on low gear changes). But not covered by warranty, so back to supplying main dealer. Anyone with experience of this or best approach to take? Read more

Car bought from be main dealer less than year ago. 7 speed DSG auto box causing problems. Local dealer says needs new dsg clutch pack, but not covered by VW Warranty. So it's got to go back to supplying dealer for them to look at. Any advice or prior experience on this. 60k on the clock, full history, 1.6 diesel Read more

The DQ200 is totally unsuited to the torque of a diesel, the car did well to get to 60k. Should have gone for the 2.0L with the wet clutch DSG.

Wait until you get the quote for the replacement clutch pack......

'04 V40; has sat in driveway for a few years now. Started regularly but eventually the battery began to run down so I would jump start it every 10 days or so and leave running for half an hour; not ideal, I know (but life got in the way) - and I couldn't bear to part with it for sentimental reasons!

Started firing on 3 cylinders approx 3 months ago.... Read more

I'd suggest first removing the plugs and see if you've got sparks. If you have, then it could be down to old/dirty petrol. Perhaps buy a cheap OBD code reader and see what that says?

Forgot to mention, I ran an OBD2 diagnostics check - all fine except airbag sensor switch (which I'll deal with before I get back on the road - if it ever starts)

Trilogy.

Will save telling people to avoid buying them new.

Any comparison of price needs to take into account the removal of tarriffs which reduced prices by 10%.

Has the EU-Japan FTA come into effect yet? At least until December, we should be following that deal as well. If this now applies to Mazda, it sounds like they haven't passed on this to consumers - maybe they previously had been taking a big hit per new car sale and now it is just extra profits.

The actual cost of a standard valve is very little. Yours may be different, but unlikely to be expensive. Of course the business cost of a puncture repair is a lot more, but shop around, e.g. at A-T-S. My local branches are pretty reliable.

My local A-T-S charges £12.50 with free valve for a puncture repair, maybe because they are next to K fit who charge £25

Hi All,

I’m after a replacement car, MPG is crucial currently 37mpg, I am doing about 11k a year(Commute includes motorway). Budget would be 2.5k/3k,max mileage 80k . I would ideally want MPG of around 50 plus.... Read more

At this money reliability and cost of repair are far more important that outright economy. I’d forget diesel here as they’re much more complex, less reliable and far more costly to repair. A good petrol supermini is the most economical way to travel for your budget and I’d shortlist the following. Ford Fiesta 1.25/1.4 Mazda 2 1.3 Suzuki Swift 1.2 Toyota Yaris 1.33 Honda Jazz 1.4 All offer reliability and 50mpg plus if driven with reasonable restraint and you’ll avoid the costly woe an older diesel can deliver.

Driving style makes a lot of difference. Years ago I bought a car from my best mate, he had usually got 25 mpg, on the same roads at the same times of day I got an average of at least 32 mpg.

How you accelerate, how you anticipate and how much you avoid having to brake affects your mpg: you don't take significantly longer to get from A to B and this style of driving is easier on the car....

The car hasn't been serviced for 18 months, but due to time on the forecourt & covid, it's only done 4k miles in that time. Any harm in letting it go until next summer? It's still <15k miles overall. Read more

Whilst FSH is desirable to some buyers it is not as important as colour, condition and options. A nice set of wheels in particular is vastly more appealing to buyers than FSH.

I have a Nissan Micra with the dreaded power steering fault.

I am plan on trying to solve the problem my self but I know it's a complex system, I have nothing to lose as I will not be paying £500 to £750 for the new column and will be scrapping it any way.... Read more

I was at school at the time, and remember the episode mostly for a rude topical song in playground circulation.

Forum members of a certain age may remember it. Went to the tune of "Ön Top of Old Smokey", but perhaps that was only in Scotland....

I think you're being very unkind.

I spend my waking hours dreaming of having an office in Dubai and frittering away my vast fortune in casinos. Just like everyone else, I would think.
