The big picture with the VW group is fairly simple.
They paid out billions in fines and compensation for their leading role in the DieselGate scandal. Then they invested many more billions in their move to electrification. That adds up to many tens of billions, so for several years they have been cutting costs and cutting corners....
Hi my daughters car has suddenly started showing the engine management light and I have checked with a handheld diagnostic tool and it is showing as misfiring on cylinders 1 & 4. I have changed the ignition coil which made no difference but when I checked the plugs the ones from 1 & 4 have a little oil on them (2 & 3 are ok).
What could be the main cause of this problem?... Read more
I had this same problem on my 05 Astra a few month back. I too changed the plugs and coil pack and had no change in fault. The cure was a new battery surprisingly. (I always expected if the car started the battery was fine). Not missed a beat since. I hope yours is as easy to cure.
Skoda Octavia 1.5 petrol is brand new, barely two weeks old and comes with the 2-year fixed price service offer. Is it worthwhile booking it in (and me paying for) at 1,000 mile point a simple engine oil and filter change by the Skoda dealer? As an engineer, I fully understand that machines do need to be run in and some early wear/oil contamination is likely. I want to keep the car for up to five years, so early care might be prudent?? What are your thoughts? Anyone else done a similar thing? TIA Read more

Bought the window air deflectors which seemed a good idea until one jammed to electric window and I decided to take them off.
But have ordered new pollen filters for both my cars and hope these may help....

Still no physical auctions and no expected start date for physical auctions.
Online auction process not popular with the trade, many of the descriptions especially mechanical reports are lacking and difficult to make full assessment of vehicles online.
.
Heard of dealerships sending stock back to the auction house as vehicles are not as described.
Not sure what Mannheim and the others are doing,
On a wider point, it’s difficult for a car buyer especially in a trader role to purchase large volumes via the web.
Surprised BCA are still closed to physical auctions, it can be done with social distancing just needs the buyers to behave properly and use the seating area when bidding instead of congregations around the auction hall entrances. Read more
A bit of both, I would imagine. There does seem to be a log jam of cars at auction houses, and the used car dealers have pretty much been trading contactlessly continuously during lockdown but unable to replenish stocks. And it’s apparently Summer....
Not much on here today, so here's a little puzzle. Ever since bought new in October there has been a 'tinging' rattle lasting only a second or two apparently from inside the 'B'pillar just below the seat belt attachment best heard with the driver's R ear. Yesterday we eventually made our first post-purchase return visit to Arbury motors for them to investigate and fix. I described it as sounding like a nail hanging from a piece of string swinging and tapping against the interior metalwork whenever slowing down or veering to the left. After a sunny afternoon pic-nicking and people-watching in nearby Leamington Spa Park, we returned to be proudly told the solution. They nearly gave up, but all credit to them for perseverance...'Peugeots don't rattle, sir'. Naturally I had scoured the internet for a possible solution but apart from a batch of early disintegrating BIO cambelts and one report of a spark plug breaking up I could find no significant problem with this model.
Looking forward to your guesses - answer tomorrow evening.... Read more
Way back in the 1980's I bought an ex demo 2 litre Capri. The one that superceded the early hockey-stick model.
I was fitting some wiring for rear speakers so removed the rear seat squab. Underneath on top of the metal floor I found a large selection of assorted black self tappers, spire nuts, plastic clips etc, like it had been dumped there. So much there was a cupped double handful of the stuff. Came in very handy! I've still got a few left!

They may be less skilled (not sure about that, myself) but they're dying in far fewer numbers than in previous decades. All that tech must be doing something.
In some regard - yes, but I think that the main reasons are the introduction of safety cells, airbags and ABS in vehicles, and, just as important, great strides in emergency medicine....
Can I just tack on my own appreciation of misar's review - exceptionally informative and helpful. The Mazda's lack of interior space (or an estate version) took it off my list when I was buying - indeed, misar's strong criticisms here speak volumes for how impressive he must have found the car otherwise!
