I recently read somewhere ... it might have been here, or possibly elsewhere ... that the Kia warranty on new cars was 7 years - but that for the final 2 years it only covered engine and gearbox.

At the time it didn't sound familiar and when I check the Kia terms and conditions I can't see a mention of it. Certainly there are plenty of exceptions - but nothing along the lines of that described.... Read more

Let us also suppose that the pensioner couple bought an example with a DCT gearbox, of which are now widely used in many new Kia's and Hyundai's (and a type of gearbox, thus far, not known for being reliable long term). Should that gearbox fail within the 7 years, they will get it replaced under warranty. But were they to follow your service schedule advice, the warranty would be invalid and they would have to pay for the gearbox themselves. Not sure how much that might cost, but i'd guess several times more than the £1000 they saved in servicing costs...........

Very tempted to buy this from a large dealer: 2016, 37k miles, lovely condition etc - but the record shows it had a new cylinder head fitted at 20,000 miles. Call me old fashioned but I never heard of any car requiring such major work at such a low mileage. Haven't been able to get info from the BMW main dealer which did the work, but what might have been the reason? By 2016 I thought they'd fixed one or two problems, and this 1.5 petrol engine is well thought of surely. Does this make it a car to avoid?

Grateful for any help!... Read more

My impression is that 3-cylinder engines tend to suffer disproportionately from HG failures.

IF this is true, it could be inherent to the generic design, or just because they tend to be smaller so get pushed/boosted more....

Here we go again. I have finally got the results for the pre purchase inspection done on the car.

It is all downhill with old cars. If you are mechanically minded and DIY and the car is a hobby then great. If you have to rely on a garage then they are a liability for as long as you own them and then can you sell it on?

I had reason to change the front legs, the garage fitted gas struts which are a very harsh ride and makes the front of the car higher, when going over drains and poor road surfaces the front suspension bangs and knocks, as I said the legs top mounts lower wishbones and tyerods been replaced also, please help it is driving me mad.... was the original legs oil type? If so where can I buy them and what make are they.
Many thanks

I doubt very much that new gas struts would make the ride hard and the front higher. It could be that higher rate springs have been fitted or the wrong struts have been used.

See if you can find out the part numbers used , they could be itemised on your receipt. Look online to see whether the parts are suitable for your particular model.

I'd like to minimise the depreciation on purchasing a used Yaris Hybrid. As someone inexperienced with cars, what year would you advise going for - mileage should be about 40k?

Also I would want to purchase using a car loan, where would you recommend I purchase - somewhere such as Car Giant or elsewhere to minimise risk?... Read more

Thanks all, which year would you go for?

Can't tell you what year to go for without knowing your budget. As paul says, as new as possible is usually the best option, but given you seem to be set on a car with 40k miles (?), i wouldn't be ovely concerned about the age, especially buying an approved used example from a Toyota dealer with full history.

So I have my heart set on buying a 3 series tourer

My dilemma is picking an engine? i'm looking at spending up to £5k, maybe a little more if something fantastic shows up, so realistically looking in the 2008 ish region, I thought a 320d would be a safe bet, but looking into all the timing chain issues with the N47 engine, i'm a little nervous about it... The 4 cylinder engines are not more prone to chain issues. They use the same chain design on both N series engines.

It's just that for every 6 cylinder they sold, they sold about 10 4 cylinders so the issues appear far more common on them....

Im aware that quite a few car sales garages are adding circa £200 administration charges to their cars both old and new. Now obviously with haggling ( i said id walk and find a dealer who does not charge extra rather than pay) you can get it removed. However how many people are too timid to just pay up adding a unnecessary chunk to changing cars?

Im surprised its a legally allowed charge with government clamping down on these types of hidden charged, the garage after all are already making hundreds of pounds of profit on the deal.

I've had that, I just politely told the guy I wouldn't pay any admin charges and would look elsewhere. They absorbed the charges.

I have posted this problem on a Merc forum but I get the impression that not many Mercedes owners do their own repairs, so I am hoping someone on here might be able to help.

When first started the car will reach full revs and will go like a train, after a few minutes the turbo boost drops off to virtually nothing above 2000 rpm, if you stop and restart its OK again for a while.... Read more

Well it doesn't appear to be stuck vanes as the lever moves quite easily from one end to the other, both manually and when you rev the engine.
