After a journey of about 50 miles I left a dual carriageway and noticed that the car was idling too fast at junctions, initially only dropping to about 1,500 rpm but later only to 2,000 rpm.
After breaking my journey, the car stalled backing out of the parking and I was unable to restart it. It turned over fine (almost new battery) but showed little interest in firing.... Read more
Please will someone out there remind me of the title of the film which may have had Tom Hanks as the male lead. He was a widower with a son about nine years old. I can't remember a great deal about the story but probably enough for someone to answer my question. The Dad listened to a radio phone-in programme which featured people in his situation and subsequently he became friends with a lady who was also listening to that programme. In due course, much encouraged by his son, our friend arranged to meet said lady at the top of the Empire State building in New York. They almost missed each other but because the lad had left his satchel behind, they had to go back up the ESB and there was the lady waiting for them. Enough said? Read more
This is my wife's favourite film. So, I watched it many times. And I also like it. Tom Hanks is a great actor.
Spammer.
I replaced the ignition module the other day and now get a spark when I first turn then key to the on position, however when I crank the engine there is still no spark at all. Before that I had no spark at all.
So far I have replaced:
Spark plugs
HT leads
Distributor rotor arm
Distributor cap
Coil
Ignition module.
Any suggestions on what to try next.
Thanks in advance. Read more
Did you check if the rotor arm is turning when cranking over with the starter?

"Together we made a great team."
Yes - that's the point. Of course there are things that computer systems can do, and remember, much faster and more efficiently than humans - but there are also things that, so far at least, only humans can do.
I am off in an hour to visit friends whose road is in a CPZ. This operates Monday - Saturday, 06:00 - 18:00. Today being a bank holiday they wondered if they needed to use one of their visitor vouchers. After spending time yesterday searching the council website to no avail and eventually ringing them they were told bank holidays were treated like any other day. I remember car parks being free on bank holidays. There seems an attitude by councils of sting the motorist at every opportunity and it seems worse since they outsourced parking control to iffy parking companies.! Read more
If--as hopefully seems to be a slow trend-everybody stops owning cars and working from home( less commuting), then council coffers will be in deficit due to nobody using their car parks?...
Someone I know has a Nissan Leaf. Interesting that problems with range anxiety have immediately surfaced. Charged the car up for a trip from Basingstoke to Southampton and back but getting lost in Soton meant they weren’t confident about getting back so the search for a charging point began. Apparently the car helps with this. I don’t think I could live with this palaver, how would you go about a long trip? I don!t know the real distance between charging needed but I can imagine running out of battery in the middle of nowhere on a cold January night.

I believe that there's another potential snag with the Leaf: if you try to charge it several times in the same journey - as you would when doing a long trip - the charging process gets slower and less efficient each time, I think due to overheating of the battery.
As with the Qashqai, Nissan have led the field but then allowed other better products to overtake. The Kia e-Niro sounds promising, although others seem to agree as there's a year-long waiting list.

2.2 ton rating from a 7 seat SUV? Surely not simply because it’s a unibody, i mean the full fat range rover is rated for 3.5 tons, can someone explain? Read more
I don’t envy designers of big SUV’s it seems to be pretty difficult task and X7 and Disco are prime examples, X7 overall incredibly bland so let’s add an oversized grill to make it memorable/give it character. Disco, similar thing at the back! Agree with Trilogy the current RR does look good but I can’t decide about the Velar, it seems very spec and colour dependent.
I've been waiting patiently for the launch of the new Mazda 3, which looks very impressive and good value according to Mazda's website. Called into 3 Mazda dealerships today but none had actual cars available on display - all 'expecting demonstrators before the end of May, but you can pre-order now if you want.....'!! Who 'orders' a new model of any car that can't be test driven first or sat in? And, BTW, not one of the dealers offered me a brochure!! Have Mazda actually supplied literature to dealers? Sales prevention department, me thinks..... Read more
There’s a very simple reason for dealers not yet having showroom cars or demonstrators, the car hasn’t been launched. I see no difference between Mazda and any other brand, in that they are publicising it before it lands in the UK. Nobody is compelled to place an order before seeing and driving one, but some have. The huge majority of dealer staff haven’t yet seen it, that’ll happen late April/early May, then they’ll be holding their usual launch activity once cars arrive.
Without a ramp-up of awareness prior to a launch date, dealers are likely to be ceremonially removing car covers to an empty showroom.
All-New Mazda3 (to use its Sunday name) is the first of Mazda’s seventh generation cars (next will be CX-30), CX-5 is sixth generation.

Yes they might reduce your premium but then charge you an admin fee that is more than the reduction.
Check the battery before you head out - how do you check a car battery? Read more
To check a sealed-for-life, or "jelly" battery, look vertically downwards through the little lens in the battery top, and see the colour that is showing.
Green: fully charged
Black: partly discharged
Red: fully discharged
White: fully discharged and cannot be recharged - so replace it!
No scanner but I do have another car of the same age with the same engine!
I swapped the temperature sensors and sure enough, the problem was solved on one car but transferred to the other. I'm surprised that even on a car launched in 1995, the coolant temperature sensor output is so critical to basic running of the engine but there you go....
