Good evening all, was in the queue at McDonalds drive thru in my wife's kuga and noticed a strong like burning rubber/plastic smell in the cabin, then saw greyish smoke coming from under the bonnet. Not loads but enough for me to swear loudly lol
Parked the car, opened bonnet and smoke appear to come from right hand side of engine block but underneath all the hoses so could see exact source.... Read more

I have a 2011 Toyota RAV4 and this past weekend I came home probably around 3 am on early Sunday night. This morning when I started my car I realized that I stupidly had my headlights on for 24+ hours. Luckily for me my car did start and driving to work it was fine.
I need to go on a road trip and I wanted to know if a new battery was needed or not. I don’t know much about cars but I’ve heard that if your car starts after leaving your headlights on then it will be fine. I however did get a new battery probably like 3-4 years ago so the battery is somewhat new. Would you recommend I get a new battery or is it fine as is? Read more
Grandkids.....works for us, no chance of our cars battery running flat with all the running about we do, as for my battery, pretty discharged I would say...
Hello all,
Today after work in parking garage my car (Peugeot 508) had difficulties starting. After few tries I had succeded but after 5 minutes of driving the was an erroor (engine fault) and I needed to stop. After 4 minutes I tried to start the engine but it failed, but it didn't schow any errors. The towing service checked the battery and then the car went crazy - showed all imaginable errors (from tires to brake system). It looked something like electronic short-circuit. Even the psrking brake didn't turn off for like 10 tries. ... Read more
Sounds like the battery is in trouble. Get it tested properly
I used to professionally spray cars using good old cellulose paint in the 1980s . Brilliant stuff if you got a run you could wet flat and polish and it looked amazing. I left the body trade in the early 90s so forgive my lack of knowledge now .
Fast forward to 2019 and I think most car paints are now water based. So with modern paints what is best for durability and repair ability and why?
Metallic
Flat colours ( white , red , yellow etc)
We used to say non metallics were best to colour match and blend is this still the case ? But metallics were more durable due to the extra clear coat. However having got bird poo stains on one of my (2014) metallic cars that’s actually eaten through the lacquer and into the base colour im thinking Maybe not?? Any views? Read more
With the superior rest protection modern cars have its less of a worry but in the 80’s and 90’s metallic paint resisted the ravages of time better than non-metallic. Base red still fades though and lacquer peel is still an issue particularly in Japanese cars which is one of the few weak points. I still see fairly modern Honda’s and Toyota’s suffering peel and red examples fading very early. The Europeans still show the way here. I wouldn’t be too concerned either way if you buy a nice example and give it a polish from time to time it’ll retain its looks well into old age. The paint on both my 7yr old Polo (white) and 9yr old Avensis (grey metallic) is in excellent condition with no peeling and no visible rust at all.
Weird - I've seen far more European cars of the base red colour that are faded than Japanese ones, the worst being 1990s to mid 2000s Vauxhalls. I think that most Post Office vans are Euro ones of many varieties, and very few of those are not faded, even the latest ones. It could be certain shades of red that are more susceptible, e.g. Post Office red and lighter, rather than darker shades.
Finished work Sat afternoon and when i started my car it seemed a bit slower than usual turning over, thought nothing more of it, Sun morning batteries almost flat, but she did fire up on the jump pack which ruled out starter failure.
It was then i noticed no ignition lamp showing at all, most likely alternator failure, so jacked the old girl up and got the offending item off, its easier going in from the side after removing the osf wheel.... Read more
Ha, yes just ordered another 20 litre drum of petrol engine oil, running low now and two daughter cars coming in for service shortly..:-) i also slipped another oil change into the Forester this afternoon, which takes minutes now and is clean and easy as the sump is adorned with a Fumoto quick drain valve.
Handy info there Focussed, thankyou, the batteries were changed for two new Toyota units (they generally come in twos, sided so mirror image posts) few months before i bought it so they should be ok for a long time yet, i wouldn't consider changing only one, it would feel like changing the brake pads on one side only....
I have the B-Tool app for my 330d with a V-Link Bluetooth ODB2 adapter as out of curiosity wanted to see what goes on regarding regeneration as I always use additives in the diesel fuel so wanted to see if they actually work.
I use the oilem hybrogen at the moment (have used Archoil and Hydra products to but not tested those through the app yet). ... Read more
I've noticed a slight increase in eagerness from the engine but don't really drive the car that hard to be honest Certainly seems to be a significant difference though in the amount of soot produced. :-)
Hey. I am struggling to make my mind on my second car purchase. I've got a budget of around 3500£. Two main options I am considering are VW golf 2009 1.4 TSI petrol engine which costs around £4k and BMW series 1 2005+ 116i which I could get for around £3k. I have come across mixed reviews about the 1.4 TSI engine for the MK6 as many people seems to be getting problems with timing chain which is very expensive to repair. On the other hand, I am not too sure how reliable are 1.6l engines on the 116i. I am aware that BMW will be more expensive to maintain but I could save around £1k from the purchase which I can keep for future repairs. Any suggestions are welcome please. Read more
Of all the hire cars I had over the years in this size bracket, the Golf TSi impressed me the most, but the Civic 1.8 came a close second. Plenty of grunt and quite refined. Buying 2nd hand with me paying the bills, I would choose the Civic without a doubt.

Update: had a mobile mechannic out and he has diagnosed some sort of clutch issue. He said the smell is definitely the clutch burning and suspects the clutch is not disengaging itself fully when the clutch pedal is released.
He ran a full diagnositic check on the computer and no faults were found...
