I currently drive a Toyota Auris Sport Tourer Hybrid which is great but am considering buying a used plug in hybrid to replace it (I nevr buy new cars due to the depreciation). If i go down this route, i assume that i will be responsible for ensuring that i have a suitable means of charging the car, rather than the manufacturer doing it. If so, does anyone have any idea what the additional electrical work might entail and a rough idea of cost? Many thanks Read more

The owner's manual will be full of warnings about not using extension leads to connect the car to a 13A socket...

It'll also be because of the voltage drop on a long cable.

Of course citroen themselves went and took that to the next stage by putting a 2nd engine in there. Wasn't a success though, much too tricky trying to mate up the 2 manual gearboxes with one gear lever!.

I would have thought they could have breezed a simple thing like that, they did make the DS and that was a very complicated car for the 1950's. ...

I have put my old car for sale, but I am still holding on to it for a while. The car is less worth£950. My mileage is about 1,500 miles or less per year.

Just wondering, what is the best insurance for someone in situation? Tired moneysupermarket and quote is around £500+. I am in higher crime area. ... Read more

Best solution would be to just get rid of the 2nd car, as it sounds like you could easily manage without it. If you really have to keep it, you are just going to have to keep trying different companies. Bear in mind, plenty of them won't be on all of the price comparison websites, some won't be on any.

If you only need a 2nd car a few times a year, it may well be cheaper (than spending £500) to hire a basic car as and when.

This weekend the car went in for its MOT and low and behold it failed on emissions by a very large amount. CO was 10x what it should be at 2.20% and Hydrocarbons were more than double at 500ppm. This was kind of expected but not with these results as before this the car had been burning oil through the PCV system but i have since fitted an oil catch can and that seems to have solved that problem as absolutely no smoke comes out the exhaust now bar steam when the engine is cold.

The garage was not very useful with providing a solution as they, naturally, wanted me to leave it at the garage to be fixed. Currently my theory is that the car is running very rich because of a lack of air getting into the combustion chambers as I've already tested the front heated lambda sensor and the voltage was within the range it should be, I've also taken a look inside the catalytic converter and that's fairly clean. I assume that if the fuel mixture is rich than it must be on the air side of the ratio as the car isn't putting out any black smoke which it apparently would be if the fuel was rich on the petrol side of things.

Anyway my main question is: What would be the best way to diagnose if the fuel mixture is rich or not and if it is, where is the best starting point on diagnosing the which part is at fault?

Just as a side note, there are no diagnostic codes stored in the car, but I do have a check engine light on and a "Reduced Engine Performance" note on the dashboards display. I also made a post about whether it was the catalytic converter here: www.reddit.com/r/mechanics/comments/789f5b if that helps Read more

Railroad.

Sorry I meant a high negative percentage figure, indicating that the ECM is reducing injector duration to correct the rich mixture.

HI All

Have searched lots of forums but yet to find definitive answer. Had the oil, fuel and air filter changed and after it, after a low buzzing noise from boost solenoid, the turbo stopped boosting and car became sluggish (don't think it was limp mode) Read the codes and were to do with MAF and EGR. Cleaned EGR and replaced MAF. Still doing same thing, sometimes with/without buzzing noise.... Read more

I agree. I wish it didn't happen, and those prices have been insane for many years. It's mostly driven by the stupid prices foreigners with loadsa money will pay for property they have no intention of living in. I'm just glad it all happens 150 miles from where I live....

Well, our (well-used) Shogun Sport is showing it's age. There's at least one leaky injector, 2 glow plugs are definitely not working (got tested last week), the battery it on it's way out, one hub bearing sounds decidedly unhappy, there's a horrendous amount of rust appearing on the underside (in spite of me doing a decent annual treatment), there's corrosion on brake lines, and (most worryingly of all) the electrics have been flaky for the last few months - and this is definitely NOT down to the battery, it's killed one battery already this year. Put the replacement on and the electrics still not very reliable.

So, we're thinking it's time for a change.... Read more

Very nice. We had two Foresters in our family and an Outback and we loved themall. Just a pity the newer models are not as charismatic as the ones from 1995 - 2008.

The emissions test for a Diesel engine is very basic and is only checking for smoke density. It does not measure particulate amounts.A lot more money is needed to have a suitable emissions tester to check dpf efficiency. Also an Mot tester is not allowed to dismantle any part of the car for inspection So in many cases a dpf may not be easily visible, especially if the car has under engine covers.

Not a problem FiestaOwner, your post was appreciated.

I’m worried that not only will I have to find my excess, I will also be classified as at fault with higher premiums to follow, despite doing nothing wrong.
