Picked up my Roomster, replacing the ten yo 156k bmile Mk2 1.9D berlingo, on 1st December. A trip to London and back over the weekend means I've done 500 miles so a short report seemed in order.

The London trip was to collect my daughter and her beau from Heathrow after a trip to Oz, overnight in a hotel, and then have a joint welcome home/Xmas celebration with his family. It was therefore an opportunity to try it with 4/5 passengers and quite a bit of luggage as well as a mix of motorway, urban and cross country travel.

Overall impression is a car that does what the tin says and does it well.

The 1.6TDi (yes its an EA159 variant) is willing and flexible. Slightly coa***/noisy under initial acceleration but very quiet and civilised at any normal speed. The gearing is surprisingly high - 30mph in 3rd is 1600rpm - but it pulls ok from 1500 and if you drop to second in sub 30 urban it's very nippy indeed. In other speed ranges it needs different gears to the 'lingo but get it right and performance does all I want.

Driving position is very comfortable. Seat adjustable for height and rake as well as obvious fore & aft and steering wheel also goes in out and up down. Amply supports my left hip and thigh which can gip after hour plus in either Berlingo and other cars too. Good all round visibility though I miss the Berlingo's massive door mirrors.

Easy to manoeuvre; car park at the Sunbury Premier Inn (overnight stay) was absurdly tight but manageable - reverse sensor helped. I'm coming to terms with non PSA control layout, though I keep twisting the indicator stalk to turn lights on or off.

Seated 5 without trouble for short run from LHR to hotel but I think middle seat occupant got a short straw. Boot swallowed all that was asked of it.

Lunch today was at Hampton Court. Return home to Northampton via Reading to put family on train home to Plymouth. Garmin Street Pilot did the navigation via M3>Bagshot>Bracknell>A329 to Reading's massive new station and on home via A4074>A34>M40. In view of the fog I'd asked it to route us M4>A404>M40 but that insubordination is stuff for a satnav review, not here.

According to trip computer it was exactly 100 miles, journey time 2:52, 48.1 mpg and average speed 35mph.

No brim/brim measures yet as although I filled it at Fosse Park 415 miles ago it's still on around half a tank and predicting 235 to next... Read more

The one problem with the roomster - it doesnt tell you if you have left the lights on, no warning chime or auto switch off. I managed to flatten the battery on my hire car roomster.

The post was a friendly question, intended to be helpful. You responded with a snidey put down. A polite response would have cost you nothing. :(

I had to pinch myself and check I wasn't dreaming, but the price on the windscreen really was £35,600

I doubt there is much demand for an almost £40,000 auto diesel repmobile with 4x4 and a posh sounding name.

My initial thought was Citroen c6, nice car but who'd buy one. Them I thought some more and if I am not wrong Volvo v60 is based on same chasis as Mondeo. If so you can pay £33000 for one of those so maybe it's not overpriced. Badge snobbery? If ford can make the brand fly then good luck to them. I have mk4 Mondeo, it was pretty cheap used car but it is nice to drive, practical and cheap to run.

Tell tail clicking/knocking noise on full left lock. Which CV joint is it likely to be? Logic tells me it should be on the left as this is the joint that's being articulated the most. Please help me out here. Of course, I expect there's no way of really knowing without properly checking each side with the car raised. Left or right? Read more

Well done Railroad, you were correct, it was the right hand CV joint.

Hi guys!

My name is Michael, I’m a student at Middlesex University London and I’m still looking for people, who would volunteer to take part in my 5 minutes online survey. It’s about the influence of car commercials in the UK on the perception of car brands. Please click the link below to begin! Thank you!... Read more

It is, and I'm closing it. I hope that Michael will look at the first thread and take note of our comments, which may have been harsh but are meant constructively..

This morning The A12 was closed southbound as a result of a pedestrian being in contact with a car. The pedestrian was (sadly) pronounced dead at the scene and a driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence od either drink or drugs.

Now justice will undoubtedly take its course, but why in heavens name close the road for nearly 10 hours.... Read more

"People often walk on the A12 or should I say on the pavement/cycle track. Nothing unusual or illegal as it's still only an 'A' road, albeit a dangerous road." Wackyracer

There are no 'dangerous' roads, only dangerous people. A number of years ago, before the police closed roads completely, I was diving in the opposite direction on the motorway past an accident site. The traffic had stopped and a young driver hadn't noticed because he was so intent on ogling the accident - result, a rear end shunt and hundreds of very cross drivers. The police have to take 'difficult' people into account.

Since the so called Protection of Freedoms Act, it has made life simpler for the parking sharks to extract money from drivers or registered keepers. In normal circumstances I would recommend paying a properly issued local authority PCN, unless their are extenuating circumstances. As for the other kind of PCN from the sharks I am less inclined to pay up for some percieved loss or damage by a small overstay. Which brings me to my point. SWMBO and daughter went Christmas shopping. They overstayed by 22 minutes, the free 3 hour limit(yes, I know--3 hours!) They insist however that this overstay was caused by the inability of Asda Home to process their purchases correctly, which they insist took over 40 minutes to complete at the till. Partly due to a trainee operating the till incorrectly. I am prepared to go in to bat for my ladies but knowing the intransigence of ParkingEye I am not confident an appeal will be favourably considered. In view of the above mentioned Act, does anyone have a recent direct experience of dealing with the sharks at ParkingEye? Or going through an appeal process with them? Any positive comments welcome. Please no 'you did the crime now do the time' sermons. I have already pointed out to the ladies that it is really their responsibility to be aware of the parking conditions. Unless anyone has a guaranteed method of getting this message through to shopping females!!

I will see the manager at AsdaHome today. They share a huge car park with TK Maxx, The Range and Craftstores. If he supports us then an appeal will be lodged.

Just out of interest/being nosy Concrete is this Maidstone you are talking about ? ...

Fill the reservoir to max, start the engine and keep turning the steering lock to lock.As the fluid level drops, top it up to level.Eventually the whirring noise will stop, and the system will be bled.
