Also how far (in mm) over the maximum mark on the dipstick would the oil level have to be in order to cause oil seal leaks and aeration of oil problems i.e. for the crankshaft to come into contact or be immersed in the engine oil?
Would it need to be at least 25mm or more? What symptoms would the driver notice when driving?... Read more
Just received this on email from the DVSA ( used to be VOSA ) re -advice to MOT testers.
Question- Do LED headlamps require washers / self levellers?
Headlamp washing and levelling systems are a legal requirement and required if the LED headlamp or high intensity discharge lamp has a luminous intensity exceeding 2,000 lumens.
If the luminous intensity isn’t marked on the lamp, a tester won’t be able to tell if these systems are needed. In this case, the headlamps will be treated as ordinary lamps and the vehicle can be passed as they don’t need washers or levelling devices fitted.
The headlamp washers and levelling systems can only be rejected if they’re fitted and are inoperative or obviously defective. If they’re missing and you think they should be fitted, then pass and advise.

Christmas shopping in Lidl car park yesterday, 11.15am, while inside shop a man got in the Land Rover and female accomplise in a van hooked up to our Landy and towed it out of the car park not 10 yds from the Lidl huge front windows and tills in board daylight in front of all. Our irreplacable cherished family vehicle gone in the most brazen way.

Difficult for normal service to resume when certain groups have been issued blind eye or untouchable status, and endorsed by PC interests.
We are, and will for years to come, be reaping what has been sown over the last couple of decades with various groups....
Hi. I have a 2004 BMW 318ISE. I inadvertently left it idling outside the front of my house for 2 hrs last night. When I went back to it the engine had stopped and the car appears to be totally dead. When I turn the key in the ignition nothing happens. The only light that comes on is the airbag one. No response from the radio, heating, lights etc. The doors won't even lock. The engine wasn't very warm when I went back to it so assume it cut out well before 2 hrs. Have I killed my car or does the battery just need recharging? Thanks Read more
Yep, that would have been helpful
Had similar on my Saab - crank sensor. If it won't start look at the tacho when you're cranking. If there is no response then likely the crank sensor (don't know if BMWs have a cam sensor too, my Saab doesn't. I suspect it doesn't also as engines with cam sensor as well will usually still start in limp home mode eg Subarus and other Jap cars).
Recently I returned a car and managed to get a refund for a Mazda 6 that I bought that had a lot of problems with it. The car was returned within 4 weeks of purchsing it and the dealer was ok with it so that wasn't an issue.
But when I returned the keys and paper work I also returned the V5C/2 (A little green form) and it was returned before the main V5C certificate had come through to me.... Read more
I hadn't received the V5C so I contacted the DVLA. they said I had to fill in V62 Form, a covering letter explaining the whole thing and a cheque/postal order for £25.
In order for them to refund the tax, in the V62 Form I'm required to provide the VIN or Chassis number. Because I don't have access to the car and the dealer just doesn't answer his phone I can't provide this. I got on the phone again with the DVLA and they just said explain it in the covering letter.
My concern or worst case scenario is that I do not receive a refund, the dealer sells the vehicle and he then receives the tax even though he did not pay for it originally. Is this a possibility?
I've had a number of electrical issues since last year. I've taken it to a garage but they couldn't find the issue. So a list of the issues:
1. Battery light comes on after 25-30 seconds.
2. Front passenger central locking doesn't work. If it is unlocked, global unlocking doesn't work (all locks close and then open, like if you tried to lock the car when a door was open). Only when it is locked does global locking/unlocking work with the keyfob.
3. Issues with ignition (car had poor idle, replaced ignition coil - not sure if it was due to electrics).
4. Starting issues (the biggest problem). When I try to start the car all electrics shut off. I have to open and close the drivers door several times before the car will actually start and even then it sounds like the car might not start. This happens both after leaving the car overnight and if I switch it off and turn it on after a while (so when the cars still hot).... Read more
You should have about 14.4 volts with the engine idling, sonds as though your alternator is faulty.
When locking or un-locking the car with the remote or by the key in the lock the central locking system does not work with the rear doors locked at all time and cannot be opened. What controls the central locking system as it seems to have failed ? Battery not changed or disconnected. Read more
Hello guys, I am new and first timer on this forum and hope someone would lead me in the right direction. I have Honda Accord DTECH 2008 model diesel with 93k on the clock. Yesterday I took the car to a registered garage (Not Honda garage) for full service, All the service parts used including engine oil is from Honda dealer. The only item could not be replaced is fuel filter as the mechanic could not open the fuel filter housing cap so he removed the housing from the car and try opening it, he did not want to apply extra force in case it break the housing which would cost £300 for the unit so the housing was put back without changing the fuel filter. Anyway after the service while i was on my way home I noticed that only the VSA Triangular sign is ON all the time and VSA switch would not respond at all even after keeping it pressed for longer time (more than 10 sec) and would appear every time after starting the car.
What I would want to know is it do anything with the service or is there VSA sensor close to replaced parts in case the mechanic may have damaged it. Please help me out with any information and advice you can give. Thanks Read more
Focused,,, Thanks for the advice, what you have mentioned taking the unit out of car is EXACTLY what the mechanic did. Tools to open were of right size and fitting and even by holding in vice he could not open it. Another mechanic also tried to open and was unsuccessful so they had to leave it as it is in case they break the housing.
One thing I forgot to mention is when mechanic connected the Diagnostic Tester (Snap-On) it comes up "Unable to communicate" and this appears everytime. Yesterday I took the car to a mechanic who I know for some time and he also tried with his Diagnostic Tester (BOSCH & Snap-On) and both refused to communicate with ECU. It sounds a big problem and dont know how to deal with it. Thinking of taking car to Honda Garage for a basic Diagnostic test and lets see what they come up with. The car runs fine and as it should and no signs on display except the one I have already menyionedIn the mean time any advices are appreciated.
Hi everyone!
I'm new to the forum and I'm after a bit of advice regarding buying a second hand car... I've been hunting for a small hatchback for my other half for a while now. She's going to do about 8 miles a day Monday to Friday and doesn't want anything fancy so my initial thoughts were:... Read more
Thanks! I have thought about the Focus but then it seemed too much for we need. I'm not too worried with insurance to be honest. My other half is 32 and has been driving my company car for a few years.
It's very easy to judge people based on what they drive and I sometimes wonder what sort of houses car owners have. I sometimes see expensive cars parked outside cheap houses, and also cheap cars parked outside expensive houses. So I was wondering how much people spend on their cars relative to their houses. Eg. if your house costs £300,000 and your car is worth £15,000 then that's 5%.
I'm sure people must judge me when they see my car. I wonder whether I would be treated differently if I had a more expensive car, but I like my car. My car is reliable and very cheap to run. My car is only worth 1% of my house's value. Read more
In 1991 I spent £125,000 on my house and £22,000 on my indulgence car. The house is maybe worth £750,000 and the indulgence about £100,000.
In the 24 years i must have spent an amont equal to the purchase price on each of them.
But I'm not selling and I'm happy, especially when the bottle-blonde WAG referred to the indulgence as a 'cool old car' in Waitrose carpark the other day. Wish Icould have returned to complement but she was driving a blunged up X5.
My daily driver cost about £15k last year and is maybe worth £10k now.so be it.
You've already asked this question, using slightly different wording. And it has been answered too.
